While the world’s attention has focused on a human pandemic, African swine fever (ASF) is still threatening our livelihood.
Although the ASF virus does not pose a hazard or risk to humans, it is a highly contagious and deadly pig disease that has already caused huge economic losses and considerable trade disruptions.
Smallholder pig farms or backyard producers are thought to be the most at risk.
To help improve biosecurity measures in the farm, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through its Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD)
at the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) has developed a simple, yet informative animation on African Swine Fever to inspire smallholders to “Be a Champion Farmer!”,
just like farmer Su.
Good biosecurity measures consistently implemented in the farm can save millions of pigs thus, avoid the catastrophic collapse of small-scale farms economy.
