I was diagnosed in 1997. Became a serious consumer of the psychiatric system. Cost me my marriage. Family, everything. Living with the stigma and also having to salvage something from my life. Find a new vision. Find a cure and live on. I found that instead of lithium. I was way better when I was careful about ingesting potassium( through leafy greens) Omega 3s slightly higher dosage than recommended daily. And vitamin d and c. The last time I was hospitalised was 2003. I haven't been medicated sinse 2009 I watch my stress and honour my spirituality as a priority. Then I found keto. This is a cure. When you combine everything.

@@ranawaheed2719 May your family also find improvement. Expect a jig saw puzzle with lots of pieces. Many metabolic interventions (nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, circadian rhythms, light, relationships) seem to matter. Small steps add up. Sometimes they have to be ready & want it themselves. Personally, I'm super excited for Chris Palmer's book, Brain Energy, out next November. Might consider a preorder. Loving mama bears can make a big impact. Y'all got this!

I don’t normally ever comment on RU-vid videos or much of anything really, but I can speak from my own experience going through bipolar disorder and relating to everything Matt described as part of what I went through as well. Fast forward about 8 years from the time when I took myself off medication (2010) and tried keto for the first time (2018) and felt absolutely incredible for the first time since before my first manic episode. Then I was told by doctors perhaps it wasn’t very safe for my health and was spooked into eating a WFPB diet and did that off and on for a bit, felt terrible but thought it was the best thing for me at the time. I started taking a bunch of supplements and ashwaghanda as a natural mood stabilizer. I gained weight, had low energy and started having health issues. I was always hungry and thinking about food constantly. So after much prayer and seeking God’s Word for help and guidance for my health, I decided to switch back to what I call a “modified keto”, I guess of what your site calls high satiety diet (higher protein, more moderate to high fat, low carb) and I feel like a completely different person in the best way possible. Then I stumbled across this video and truly feel like it was a Godsend. I, too, have wanted to help the mental illness community to shed light on alternative ways to treating this illness that doesn’t involve heavy medication or sedation. Thank you for your work and spreading this message to people! I’m praying it helps more come forward with their journeys as well :)

@kaileydavey5975 For your modified keto - do you count total or net carbs? And such a beautiful and inspiring story! I still stray off and on to "a healthier" diet, it takes time for the brain to adapt. Do you have tips how to cope mentally with keto concept during the beginning period?

I don't have time to watch this right now, but I wanted to say that keto helped my bipolar symptoms a lot. I hadn't been dealing with a lot of mania the last couple of years, but I had near-constant depression for the last several years, loads of anxiety, irritability, and a bit of paranoia. I say keto helped a lot, but it didn't help completely. Then I went carnivore and all of my symptoms have almost completely vanished. Now if I have anxiety there's actually something to be anxious about, and a lot of times there's things I could be anxious about but I still don't have anxiety. I don't feel depressed anymore. Occasionally sad if there's reason to be so. And I'm usually only irritable if I consume caffeine, aspartame, or a lot of bad things are happening at once.

@@goodhealth3020 I was already no meds before I started this way of eating, because I had no insurance and the mental health clinic here is awful, so for a good 10 years I've been managing my illness with a combination of supplements and coping techniques. I'm on disability for my mental illness, so not having to work definitely helped in that regard. Now the only supplement I take is Valerian root, partly because my brain is still scared to let go of everything, and partly because it does help me sleep. I keep kava kava in the house for bouts of anxiety, but generally only need to take it if I consume caffeine or aspartame, and I'm learning to avoid both of those. Also, if I have a cheat day and have carbs I'll feel irritable again and maybe mildly anxious. I've heard from a lot of people who have healed their depression and/or bipolar this way (and one that healed their Schizophrenia), and at least two of them said they eventually added carbs back in and their symptoms didn't return. I don't know if that will ever be the case with me, but likely I won't try it, as I had so many physical issues too and I don't want to chance flaring them up again. For almost 20 years I suffered mentally, and for a good 10 years I also suffered physically, and now that I'm no longer suffering I don't want to go back to that, ever. I will eventually try to go a bit ketovore, adding in just a small amount of low oxalate vegetables and see how that works, but for the foreseeable future I plan to stay carnivore.

@WEBSPORES ON INSTAGRAM Why would I do that when eating carnivore handles all my symptoms? I literally have no mental illness symptoms eating carnivore, so there's nothing to be treated with mushrooms. I am glad it helped you, I just don't need it myself.

@@VidNibs I've never been all red meat, although that is the majority of what I eat. For budget sake I mix in some chicken and pork here and there. I also eat fish and eggs, and sometimes dairy. Eggs do sometimes make me bloat, but a lot of times they don't. I can't figure out why. For me a typical day might be a pound of ground beef (drain the grease and save for cooking) with butter for my first meal, and my second meal might be 3 eggs and some other meat, like bacon, ham, or chicken. Obviously I eat steak as much as I can afford, and I love chuck roast cooked in the slow cooker. I do have yellow mustard fairly regularly and I will occasionally have a dill pickle, and I will use a seasoning blend for chicken or pork, but I only use salt with beef. I mostly drink water, occasionally some peppermint tea if something has bloated me, and very occasionally a cup of black or groan tea. I rarely eat liver or organs. I did more at first, but now I only eat them if they're sounding good. You can really over do it on them, and I trust my body to let me know if I need them.

I am so proud of this young man. Good for you for taking control of your mental health. I notice when I eat junk food I am so anxious the next day with such negative thoughts. I avoid sweets 99 percent of the time. It hurts my brain. Congratulations to you sir!!

One thing to stick & stay with keto is interest in making your own food. It's EMPOWERING! It's a skill, an art form, all the while nourishing oneself (and others.) Experimentation/improvisation is key and easy once you figure out what can be switched out with carbs. Anyone would do well to pick up basic cooking skills as part of therapy.

Actually a “healthy diet“ is part of the problem. I was a big proponent of healthy whole grains and eating a whole foods in general with very little fat. Plenty of depression and anxiety. Now I am “dependent“ on a keto diet to have the energy to work in medicine when everyone else is so burned out.

Thank you for sharing your story! I'm on Keto for a couple of weeks now because I read in a book that healthy Keto is the best option for people with Bipolar. The truth is that I didn't adapt to keto from the beginning, so I used this method: Phase 1: 55% protein, 35% fat, 10% carbs Phase 2: 50% protein, 40% fat, 10% carbs Phase 3: 45% protein, 45% fat, 10% carbs Phase 4: Keto and it's important for me to fast with water, electrolytes and vitamines. I lost lots of weight, I don't binge eat in the middle of the night anymore

Interesting. I lost 20kgs on a low carb diet and intermittent fasting whilst still on bi polar meds. I always find it interesting when people talk about bi polar meds weight gain. My weight is optimal 75kgs at 180cms. There is definately a solution to any weight gain concerns. I also don’t drink alcohol and I exercise a lot. I will take my medication for the rest of my life, but I consider myself in bi polar remission. I previously had it since 2002. My condition now doesn’t effect my function in any way.

I like your way of thinking this. Being or not being on meds is not what is really key; it's whether, as you say, the condition impacts your life. Matt is still on meds, but now he is well. Before keto, he was on meds and NOT well. He is slowly tapering; we'll see what happens.

Good for you, I been following keto because I was extremely sick without knowing it was BPII, 5 years later it became very clear what it was, I hope that with the right medication that is taking a while, and Keto I can go back to a full life, I'm still working on my recovery, but you give me hope.

5 years ago I felt I was about to break down and loose it all, I started keto and I became functional again, no long time ago I've got diagnosed with BPII after I couldn't hold it anymore. I will always take my meds but I will also always follow keto.

I have been diagnosed with bipolar since 2005, many hospitalizations, meds galore. I’m looking forward to trying the ketogenic diet to help stabilize my moods and increase my quality of life. Thank you for sharing your story. I too suffered the stigma of mental illness. I’m a nurse and after I became I’ll, my colleagues and friends that I had worked with for over 25 years disappeared. No longer wanted contact with me.

Thanks Bret and all. Yes, sleep and diet and low-intensity exercise are basically the keys to healing and living as we are evolved and meant to be. Optimism and connectedness too, but we can only start to discover/re-discover our hope, when we fix our diet/sleep/activity. I'm 65 in September and experienced suicidal disintegration and life-threatening traumas for many years, some of which I brought on myself, mostly prompted by the suicide of my partner in 2015 (hence my username here), which compounded a few other lies that I'd lived for 50 years :) Other traumas were what happens if we are susceptible to vultures and other predators, combined with an addiction to guilt and responsibility. For me, my PTSD fractals and revisitings and memories were part of an indescribable horrific spiralling hall of mirrors, especially combined with self-destructive addictions of overwork, over-exercise, self-loathing, etc, etc. I believed that carbs and sugars were vital for my endurance hill-running and 'healthy life balance'. I've now come through it to understand a lot more about eating properly and fixing self-destructive addictions. Awareness is the doorway. Until we know the doorway is there we cannot walk through it :) Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration (see positivedisintegration.com, and summary www.businessballs.com/blog//blog/personality-development-through-positive-disintegration/) supports the (and my) position that many 'mental illnesses' are not diseases per se, and my own recovery and survival significantly depended on my resolve that I was not 'diseased'. Grief is not just about someone dying - grief is the letting go of anything that we believed defined us, especially who and what we believed we were. Freedom is scary. We tend to justify being stuck, and avoiding the pain of growth, by justifying and 'owning' our habits and addictions, rather than dare to let go of them, because this is a letting go of the self too; a rebirthing. It can hurt very much. I stand by Dabrowski's 'non-disease' approach this because it worked very powerfully for me. It's one thing to be suicidal and to survive suicide attempts; it's even more challenging to believe that there is no purpose or gift from the pain. There is most definitely a purpose in the pain. It's how we grow, to be fearless and loving and compassionate and peaceful. Trauma is growth. I now see my partner's horrific suicide as a powerful gift to me. Why should I frame it any other way? None of us understands the powerful energies, especially quantum (=love in many ways) and our connections to cosmological phenomena. Zeitgeist and dreams are other examples of the inadequacy of modern physics to explain anything. I'm convinced that nearly all 'mental illness' is simply growth to real maturity, prior to which in many ways we are still children. Our human life on Earth is part of a spiritual journey, of the soul, that defies explanation. Diet and healing, placebo, herbs and ancient wisdoms are all part of the mix. Microbiome too. We are re-discovering and learning new things all the time, about ourselves and what life and reality actually are and could be. Gratitude, abundance. Thanks again, Alan Chapman LiveWildLiveFree.org

I hope that they can start diagnosing leaky gut (if that is the reason) for when dietary interventions work. Perhaps there is some percentage of leaky gut related psychosis. What if 20% can be reversed with diet? It would be a revolution. Especially for the homeless population.

Dr. Eric Westman is the go to guy for prescription strength Keto... as he calls it. He has the knowledge, the experience and the research needed for getting the best results on Keto. i am getting back on board and am following his approach. i am very interested in Keto for mental health conditions as i have people i care about who suffer from schizophrenia. im going to suggest Keto to them... and tell them to discuss it with their psychiatrists... thank you for this informative video.

Great News & Fabulous Information. My ex-brother in-law is bi-polar and has been in & out of jail & mental institutions his entire adult life. Ironic hearing this podcasts, as the number of times I suggested to him to have hair /mineral analysis to see if maybe copper (ref. schizophrenia ) or other minerals might be out of balance as well as for him to eat a high fat diet to possibly lubricate his synapses for better connections. My crude thinking before I understood Keto!

I'm treating my Bipolar 1 condition with a ketogenic diet - to feel my best I need to have blood ketones greater than 4mmol/L. It's very hard to achieve ketones >4mmol/L & maintain them. Slightest deviation from my strict macros (4:1 ratio) & I immediately suffer the consequences. Recently I've tried out adding some Ketone Esters to my diet. Wow!! Amazing!! It's taken some of the stress out of my keto diet. I love the mental clarity & positivity. Agreed with Dr Palmer, ketone esters on a standard American diet would not provide the same benefits.

So interesting! Matt is supplementing with ketone salts (Keto Start by Audacious Nutrition) and that seems to help him as well, especially when he is tapering a medication. What ketone ester are you using? How often do you take it? How much does it pop your blood ketone level?

That's very interesting. I have schizoaffective and keto didn't work too well. I never saw ketones at 4 mmol. At best I could get 3.6 but that was impossible to maintain. I ate 4:1 too.

The brain is 60% saturated fat, the fattest organ in the body, there's a clue there on why a high fat diet would help. High fat diet cures epilepsy, diabetes, obesity, arthritis - enough even to cheer up even clinically depressed people.

I know of a vegetarian, who had type 1 bipolar and ended up committing self ending during a manic episode. It saddens and infuriates me that a mother and wife could still be here if the doctors just advised a change in food and stopped pushing pills.

I'll try ketogenic diet, starting now :) Bipolar II depression for three years now, it also been worsen by my awful diet and smoking habit. I have tried everything, from sports/cold shower to vitamins and meditation. It helped me felt better, but never really cured me. I hope that ketogenic diet will help me, thank you for sharing the knowledge, I am sure that many people find it useful. Peace.

Initially it's difficult but eventually it comes automatic...no cravings ...I have autoimmune and migraines...for me nothing tastes better than feeling good😃I'm only able to eat meat salt water ...but I love my steaks ground beef salmon ...no way I feel I'm missing out....I eat like a queen

Dont do the keto desserts, focus on butter, meats/eggs and clean dairy. Cooking is very easy with these and throw in some low carb veggies if you like them. You wont feel like eating all the time due to high protein and fats in them. Good Luck!

This is very encouraging; my uncle has been diagnosed with Bipolar (manic type) and my youngest sister is suspected of possibly having Bipolar, having been sectioned 3 times after depressive/psychotic episodes. She also has autism, which I think is linked to poor mental health. I was also wondering whether you'd consider researching whether ketogenic diets could help the treatment of eating disorders. I was in an eating disorder unit last year and would have my blood sugar checked regularly, and noticed that after a carbohydrate-rich meal my blood sugar could drop to very low levels (sometimes under 2). Most of the other people getting treated also had trouble managing their blood sugar, and I was thinking that the resulting mood-swings (which I often experienced when hungry/after large meals) could have led to the eating disorder. I've largely been trying to recover from my eating disorder using a low-carbohydrate approach, which is actually the only way I've managed to start increasing the amount I eat without getting extreme digestive problems, and I've also stopped getting the mood-swings I used to get when hungry.

@@lifewithrachelm1460 I don't eat dairy as I don't tolerate it, but it's only bad if you don't tolerate it. Ketogenic diets can be dairy free.

The brain can run on glucose , but chooses ketones when both are available. When carbs block/prevent ketone production and hypoglcemia causes a glucose deficiency , the brain has a lack of any type of fuel and suffers injury.This is believed to cause alzheimers / "type 3 diabetes" .

Doctors I have studied a lot due to my chronic illnessess. I have celiac disease, Eoe, Hashimoto, Gluten ataxia, hereditary spastic paraplegia spg4, schizoaffective disorder, megaloblastic anemia, lymphocytes colitis, gastroparesis and probably secondary Addison disease. My mother has Chron s disease and depression, my father has the neurodegenerative disease that I mentioned and my brother has epilepsy. I have studied that gluten cross reacts with the Gad65, which are the receptor of our Beta cells. I also studied that spastin binds with the glutamate receptor ( do not know if it is the Gad 67 or 65) poorly creating hyperexictability. ( Same as it happened when you have celiac and diabetes type 1). Is glutamate responsible to the high extension of the Theta wave? Are then theta wave created when we go through hypoglicemia? How glutamate increase lactic acid ? Is it an Atp ( mthfr) defects ? Is also methionine and homocisteine ( with Ros) involved with gad 65 toxicity ? I hope that you can read my text doctor. I am in the UK and no longer taking insulin but my Dr say what I am doing is not approve or recommended. I am only carnivore now and I have lost 65 pounds.

It Helped my bipolar I lost a lot of weight though and had low energy I am still on it and I still have low energy but that’s just me. but this diet 90% of calories from fat the stricter anti epilepsy diet did exactly what my mood stabiliser the anticonvulsant medication did I could not tell you which one was more effective as they were both just as effective for my hypomania and mania. Anticonvulsants did little for my depressive episodes but cutting down on manic episodes got rid of the depressive episodes that followed. The great thing about keto is that I didn’t have the side effects I did with anticonvulsants of feeling foggy brained and numb and unable to care about things or enjoy things it also made me gain weight crave carbohydrates and made my energy go up and down like crazy as if my blood sugar was dropping every few hours and I would get shaky and need to eat but my fasting glucose tests and thyroid tests did not show any reason for this. It’s a tough diet to stick to and getting on it is rough but for manic symptoms it’s just as good as medication without the dangers of those meds and nasty side effects. I found the diet more expensive and restrictive it’s tough on my digestion and 3 months in I still have stable but low energy. My iron is coming up and b12 and all my blood tests and blood pressure and ecg everything they have been monitoring is good except minor low sodium which I have to supplement with lots of salt to keep on top of. I had electrolyte imbalances the first month of keto despite being on phosphate and electrolyte medication daily to help this. I am still on the electrolyte formula and everything except my sodium is good and I have stopped having to have slow k (pottasium tablets) as my potassium is now stable with just the oral drink medication I have that has basic electrolytes in it. I was fortunate enough to be supported by my doctor through trying this diet and being monitored regularly.I did end up in the hospital once due to very low sodium a few weeks into the diet and that made me very sick and confused and dizzy and really not right in the head I was so confused I would wander off in the hospital and get lost and didn’t understand why I was there and what was happening until they got my sodium levels up with a drip and then I was fine. Since then I have been restricting fluids a little and using a lot of salt and that has kept my sodium levels just below normal where I don’t feel symptoms.

So glad that you are finding interventions that work for you! I've heard from multiple folks that the initial fat-adaption period can be challenging and I'm glad you have a clinician who is helping you through it. I found my own osteoarthritis symptoms better in months but my Traumatic Brain Injury related symptoms took over a year. Hopefully it will get easier for you as well. You got this!

Can our great host here or anyone recommend a Ketogenic Therapy Nutritionist in the UK or online support? My daughter has had multiple medications and relapses almost every year since age 11 and sometimes twice a year. She is under psychiatric treatment in hospital right now. She is predisposed to diabetes. She has been put on Olanzapine during hospital admission and consultant considering Clozapine which I'm very concerned about as she is only 25 years old wanting a normal future ahead of her. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting. I started keto and fasting because I had covid that was lingering for weeks and I thought autophagy might help. I had a bad mixed mania several months into it and I typed into search 'can keto cause mania' and I found the direct opposite obviously. So it was very confusing. I'm still confused about it but I'm going to try again.

In the initial transition to keto, increased brain energy can lead to either insomnia (which could trigger mania) or hypomania, which might lead to mania? It's really really really important to treat any initial sleep disturbances with a PRN med that can put you to sleep, and to have a doctor's supervision before trying this for bipolar disorder.

@@jan_ellison_baszucki You are so right, I didn't heed the warnings and went off my meds, started keto and it wasn't long before things went very badly. Here we are a month later I'm on more meds and while I'm a lot better I'm still struggling. Really agree with you on at least have a psychiatrist who knows you keep tabs on you. I'm so fortunate that I do have a great psychiatrist who has known me for years and has helped me during the past month and going forward.

Biff's disease can be really abilitating to a family I've seen it in my family we have a we have probably several people maybe even me a little We try to help the ones that are not well or try to get them on the right track but it's so heartbreaking please stay on your diet because the longer you get into this disease and you stay in it you don't try to fix yourself the worst your life becomes you get real isolated you don't talk to anybody you've probably destroyed half the family doesn't want to see you as much as we try to help farther back we Ge it from him God-bless be praying for everybody

What's the name of the guy who does all the coffee reviews? James Hofman I think? Anyway he did this experiment using a insulin monitor and he was testing coffee with breakfast vs without. Just so happened to eat a piece of toast first without butter and then with butter. Without butter the insulin spiked, but just by adding butter the insulin level barely went up. It wasn't what he was testing for, just a coincidence.

I know so many people this podcast could help. I just don’t know how I would go about suggesting they watch this video without creating an uncomfortable situation. The people I know seem very resistant to changing their diets and lifestyles. I don’t have mental health issues and have been on keto for two years. I did notice a huge change in my mood last Christmas when I went off keto for a few weeks. I felt sluggish and got very moody, not something I’ll do again. Any suggestions on how to broach the subject with my friends?

One thing I have found helpful is to say: "I've been hearing that this metabolic ketogenic therapy that has been used in epilepsy for 100 years can really help in bipolar." Then you wait....leaving out the term "diet" seems to help avoid the immediate resistance.

This is a really long video and I can't watch it all until later but I'm very curious if anybody has been able to conclusively prove whether it was the ketones that were making a difference or the potential of avoiding a food sensitivity? My immediate thoughts are the anti-inflammatory effects of avoiding the major allergens which the keto diet does do a lot of. It also forces you to up your protein, get your anemia levels back up, fixes a lot of nutritional deficiencies etc. I'm sorry if that was stated in the video and I have missed it

In the video Dr. Palmer reviews several of the many suspected mechanisms of action. But Dr. Palmer also points out that there are no case reports of epileptics controlling their seizures with a diet that wasn't ketogenic. Presence of ketones seem to be a useful biomarker. The absolute level of ketones necessary to have a particular therapeutic effect may vary dramatically between individuals. [For 100 years Pharma has been trying to simplify the ketogenic diet into a pill without success. It seems to be complicated.] I know of 2 individuals with bipolar that started with Ketogenic Diet Therapies (KDT) and then moved to a carnivore version of KDT. Note not all carnivore diets have enough fat to be ketogenic. They felt that they had food sensitivities in addition to their bipolar.

I don't disagree with Cecile but just adding. I removed gluten and gluten like proteins, all dairy and refined/added sugar. My symptoms resolved. I recently saw an allergist/immunologist because of sudden allergies. Turns out it was MCAS/Histamine sensitivity. He added that they see mental illness recoveries when people solve their food sensitivities. So there are a lot of approaches. I have Bipolar1/Schizoaffective disorder.

Yes, addressing food sensitivities, allergies and autoimmune responses can also clear up many symptoms. I had no idea that bipolar was among them. How did you figure it out - through allergy testing, elimination diets? Was carnivore part of what you tried? Non-clinician here. Extended family members had schizophrenia when I was growing up. Want to be well armed if my kids or their cousins show signs, especially if these are spectrum diseases

It started with trying to lose the weight that was brought on by the antipsychotic. It's been an on-going journey since which included allergy testing. It's a laboured point but it is true that there is no one path.

@@CecileSeth Hi. I'm really sorry, I thought I had responded. I was on the BipolarCast as well, to share my story. It started with wanting to lose weight because I was fat from the antipsychotics. My therapist and psychiatrist were providing pseudo-solutions, this frustrated me. Once I saw the weight-loss and experience mental wellness, I started identifying more health issues that needed me to work on. That is how I saw an immunologist. I got allergy tested, went on a type of elimination diet and finally arrived at something that has worked very well for me. I'm vegan so carnivore diets were never something I pursued. The journey is really continuous, one has to tune into themselves in a way you've never done before and search because your life depends on it. Importantly, there is no one size fits all. Wishing you and yours all the best.

The opposite has been true for Matt, though it is important to be careful in the first few days of transitioning to low carb. Dr. Palmer warned us to have a PRN med on hand in case Matt had insomnia. He took an extra 2.5 Zyprexa for two nights when he cut out carbs, then he never had any insomnia again (in 18 months.) What he has experienced, instead, is that his circadian system seems to have normalized; when he loses sleep one night, he gets tired and makes up for it the next night. That never happened before keto. It seems to have a very positive effect on sleep.

Nancy, for more than 10 years I was sleep deprived (PTSD). I am now following a keto diet and I sleep like a baby at 66. And my PTSD problem simply vanished. I was followed for years by a very good psychologist but now I consider that it was a waste of money and time. Keto is the solution

Interesting podcast. One extremely important thing you forgot to ask Lain is if ketones were measured in the study. I can't believe you forgot to ask him that and just take for granted that when someone is on a so-called keto diet that they are really on a keto diet producing ketones. You know that they could just be on a low-carb diet NOT producing ketones and therefore NOT on a keto diet. I think you are very capable and thinking, but please stop assuming ketosis when someone mentions the word keto diet since it is misused by so many people. You can't be on a keto diet unless you produce a measurable amount of ketones.

Doesn’t keto diet have high oxalates with the keto breads and desserts made of almonds, chocolate and other nuts? Spinach too is high in oxalates. The protein in meats is great though.

Keto diets can be done in any way one desires. Many don't eat any sweets at all, but stick with meat and vegetables. No need to eat spinach if you are sensitive to it!

I have a illness called Bipolar that challenges me everyday... and nobody ever looks at this About You section.. to ever see and ever know this about my life... and if they do read this and find this out about me, they either suddenly, shun me, keep me at arms length... like Bipolar is a disease they might catch off me or just stop talking to me... I tell you the truth, many teenagers who are bipolar and don't know it, come age 17 will suddenly start having suicidal thoughts, be in a desperate hurry to die... feel self hate, no value and worthless, even thou there is no reason for them to feel this way at all and everything in there life is pretty ok and great... what is causing this is the actual bipolar disorder, taking control of the steering wheel of the mind and the young person having no clue to what the hell is happening with them. I know this because at age 16 and younger I was perfectly happy and full of energy ( But in constant High Mania, Bipolar Hyper ),,, but when I turned 17..... depression hit me like a FIST IN MY SKULL and it just got rougher by the day. I tell you the truth, it was only till around age 39 did I finally realise what was going on when ADAM ANT started speaking up about this sickness Bipolar that I started to understand I was sick, and it was not me that was depressed or suicidal, it was the Bipolar disorder illness telling me I was, when in fact I was not. So now I know who and what my enemy is, I now can fight back.... When the illness tells me negative crap, I know its Bipolar putting its fist in my skull and ignore it... Everything above was written many many years ago.. but now today a month from 2023, no matter how hard I try to outrun this illness called Bipolar... I always lose. Its like what they say about Vampires in the movies, THE FIRST ALWAYS WIN'S... I told someone a few months ago in 2022 I had Bipolar, next thing I know they are treating me different in an keep at arms length way... and just a week ago, this guitarist Blocked me on everything he could... because am Bipolar, yes... for Bipolar !!!. So now I have learned never to tell anyone I have this illness, as next thing you know... they suddenly stop speaking to me. But nobody ever reads this ABOUT ME part of Facebook to ever know and If anyone ever does... well they not told me or know how to speak to me about it maybe lol

Initially you will feel worse. You get the keto flu. Your cells need a few weeks in order to manufacture enough mitochondria. Since fat takes longer to convert to ATP, your cells must make more of these organelles in order to produce enough ATP

Keto helped me a lot but it’s not a silver bullet. Carnivore has helped me a lot more. It makes me cringe to watch this first young man. He is too confident to still be a very short amount of time “stable” by his account. It seems like false / over confidence to me. My major manic episodes (3) were spaced out by about 8 years each and each less severe due to a better handle on my health. This kid is young and should be slower to celebrate as if he has beat this thing. Sorry I’m trying not to be too cynical, but I’ve been in his shoes and it just crushed me more to have hopes dashed when I was too confident.

I would have agreed with you if I had not witnessed myself how he had put in place every other lifestyle intervention, step by step, without putting his symptoms into remission, then with a ketogenic diet, he emerged after 4 months his old self, whom we had not seen in five full years. In those five years, he never reached "euthymia." He was not "stable" for longer than a day or two at a time. We need to do the deep phenotying through our research to know for sure, but it may be that for certain phenotypes of bipolar disorder, keeping blood sugar under control, and ketones high, will indeed keep symptoms at bay for the long term, perhaps even healing the brain. As we know, this is the case with pediatric epilepsy for a percentage of patients. Matt is by no means complacent: he monitors himself very closely for any signs of mania, meets his psychiatrist once a week, stays on the diet, and records four mood measures daily. He shares his story now, instead of a decade from now, when he can be "sure" because he may be able to help others in the process.
