I have one question about the Siege of Themyscira - how the hell does a (presumably walled) city under siege get their hands on bears? Did they just happen to have a zoo? Was their some rich eccentric who just happened to have some pet bears in their mansion? Did the city garrison have trained bears (a la Wojtek)? This is going to keep me up all night.
@MetalHeadViking
@MetalHeadViking 6 лет назад
Well Themyscira was a hellenic city at the time. And in hellenic culture they used to use animals for entertainment sometimes. So it is possible that the bears had some keeper who had some business with useing bears as entertainment, and that he would then willingly or forcefully turn in his exotic animals over to the defence of the city against the romans.

That story about the raven was hilarious. And the one about Horme legitimately made me tear up. We are separated from Arrianus by 2000 years. He could not have conceived of us today and it's hard to imagine what the world was like back then. If we met this guy today, we could barely communicate with him even with the help of experts, let alone find much common ground on a personal level, yet our love for a dog transcends time and it is something that everyone instantly understands.

Eagleman, "Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives" "Some day soon, perhaps in forty years, there will be no one alive who has ever known me. That's when I will be truly dead - when I exist in no one's memory. I thought a lot about how someone very old is the last living individual to have known some person or cluster of people. I believe the point of view differs from person to person, and how they perceive their pets. If you don't own or aren't around pets, it's hard to empathize with what Arrian felt. Some of them treat them as only pets. Some treat them as whole family members. For me, Arrian's story is amazingly wholesome, and I can relate to his feelings.

Where's my Sabaton song about Legionaries fighting bears underground? Also, I love hearing about stories like Arrian and Horme, because it shows that for all the changes that 2, 3, or 4 millennia can bring, some things really are the same, and that people can almost always find something to connect over. I think that's a very human thing to experience, for a lack of a better term.
