Bird photographers are always looking for a good tip that can help improved their photography. My hope is this video will do just that. I recorded this video with my friend Mike Milicia as part of a virtual event we participated in. I thought this section on photographing birds small in the frame would be a good topic to share.
For years I have seen a trend of bird photographers cramming the bird in frame trying to have the subject full frame often by cropping the image. This can make for some good photos however in many cases the subject is just to "tight" or almost claustrophobic with no room for the image to "breathe". In contrast, subjects that are small in the fame can help the viewer experience the bird in its habitat and a real sense of place. I encourage all bird photographers to try and capture more photos with the birds we enjoy smaller in the frame by including more of the habitat.
Be sure to check out Mike's web site, Facebook and Instagram for more great photos that will inspire you to get out in the field.
