Bird Song (for Janis) ☮ Grateful Dead, 8/27/72 

I think Jerry really loved Janis. I remember that scene from Festival Express when they were all jamming on the train. Jerry took Janis's hand and said something like, I love you Janis, loved you from the first day that I met you. Couldn't you imagine if those two would have gotten together. Blows my mind just to think about it. I hope they are all resting in peace.

I've turned my girl on the Dead --she's 64 & cool as hell, but has always thought the band was nothin more than 'Truckin' and 'Casey Jones' and the drinking songs so overplayed back in them days when they was all just hunting in VA w/ the radio. Now she's heard ' Terrapin' and 'Help On The Way" & "Eyes" etc & wants to know more about what they were really all about. I think I did a good thing today, man.

Janis was something special, only a band of friends like the dead who shared the whole scene with her can truly touch on the magic she possessed

I woke up with this song playing in a dream - searched youtube and hit play. What a way to start the day

she was my daughters babysitter in the mid 60's, we loved her a lot - still do!

We rested at Terrapin and continued on the Golden Road with a Box of Rain through the Black Muddy Water and into the Attics of my Life, Me and My Uncle always following Uncle Johns Band doing the U.S.Blues and into the Morning Dew beyond those Throwing Stones until we met Saint Stephan, our Love will Not Fade Away. Going to my first dead show this June and I’m very excited and also a little nervous but more excited! June can’t get here soon enough!

I believe in U turns, and we will pick em up, on the return trip! Acts 3:21/Joel 2:3......it was a unique time, and circumstances were exclusive for that era. Could never be duplicated again. So memory and recordings help many move on down the road, on and on and on ☮️

it always brings me to the places I need to be!!!!

I woke up to this song playing from a dream. Mind you, I never really listened to their music but it gave me a inspiration to write a screenplay. Oh I'm 25 years old and listening to "TGD."

I was almost four months old when this happened. I often wonder why this generations music speaks to my soul so loudly, but I guess it was because I was so heavily influenced by my older siblings. They, especially my brother, set the standard for me as to what was hip, what was cool, and I had the added benefit of having their album collections when they left home. I also had parents whose music tastes ranged from The Police to the Andrews Sisters, from Thelonious Monk and Pete Fountain to Waylon Jennings to Jimmie Rodgers. I was gifted a family who wore their musical tastes on the cuff of their sleeves. On any given Sunday you would hear Bach, Brubeck, and Davis... My Dad and I had a competition on who would fall asleep first while watching golf and listening to Pet Sounds. My childhood was tailor made for a music fanatic.

IMHO, the August 1972 Veneta show was, in it's entirety, one of the best Dead shows ever. The 3 people that voted thumbs down, well, maybe the Dead isn't for you.

But then 72 was a very special year...Hollywood Bowl (Pigpen's last in U.S.), Tivoli Gardens, Winterland and the Fillmore...Oh yea, and starting college @ Berkeley after a European & Middle East tour that summer. NYE was pretty awesome too. Nowadays it seems most college kids are full of rap. Seems strange to an older guy. "Songs" about money, material possessions, getting even, and effing, The physical world rather than the spiritual/cosmic. The "artists" shoot each other. Oh well, good luck with that kiddies!

Lovely song, but I find myself listening mostly to the exquisite pitch-bends Jerry is playing. Finding the bluest possible intonation for a note. One of those things where nobody can sound exactly like anybody else.
