Birding Ireland June 2023

we did some occasional birding during a one week family holiday early June.
Unfortunately we got the company of 'Poly', which turned out to be the strongest summer storm recorded during the last 50 years. Hurricane -force wind gusts reaching over 140 km/h were recorded. So not really the ideal holiday weather. Filming and sound recording were almost impossible. The tripod was useless and only some hand shot footage provided acceptable image quality after stabilisation during post processing. However, in the storm we got spectacular skies, crushing waves, misty mountains and creepy old graveyards!

Why 1080? This is 2023. I love your videos. Your opportunities make it obvious that money is no problem. The birds sure would look better in 4K.

hello Robert, Why 1080? the camera I am using is both HD and 4K, unfortunately the last only at 25 frames a second. At this frame rate moving objects are shaky. so despite the higher resolution, I prefer the better time resolution of HD at 50 frames. Nevertheless I use 4K quite often if the bird id not moving too much, so that I can enlarge the image by cropping during editing. I have been looking at more recent cameras with 4K at 50 frames and a 20X zoom (Canon and Panasonic) but none of them had decent image quality ove the entire rande of the zoom (soft ore very disturbing color fringing). so 4K is nice as a format, but you need a lens with sufficient quality to get the benefit of it. At my age, I need lightweight equipment. So large cameras or big lenses are no longer an option. regarding our travel opportunities: we have been lucky with our children and family living in Africa, America and diffrerent Eurpean countries, making trips more affordable.

Hello Guy, Thanks for you gracious reply. I have admired your work you some time now, following you all over the world. You are truly blessed to be able to do this with your wife (mine is home-bound now … we are 82) but I still carry the Sony RX-10iv. But I had to go with a lighter tripod this year after 2 knee surgeries, 3 heart cath procedures, 4 coronary bypasses, a new aortic valve, and left atrium repair, plus 3 cases of covid … all in the last 9 months. So most of my videos are local (Kerrville Texas). The Texas Hill Country has a wonderfully diverse biota, but the drought going on 3 years now is killing much of it. Here is a good example of my 4K work with it. The first one is about Two Kingbird Chicks that just fledged. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M7lDXgj4HNU.html There is a bit of action in it. When I slow down the bugs flying by, they are still pretty sharp at 0:34 and 2:06. Also notice their wings fluttering, and their mother’s wings moving. Not bad for 30fps. You are right, it would be better at 60fps. This cam also shoots 240, 480 and 960 fps. Now there you can really lose resolution unless the light is perfect. Here’s a bird video: (616) Beautiful Birds Of The Texas Hill Country - RU-vid Here is a slow motion collection (616) Spectacular Texas Birds in Slow Motion - RU-vid to show the RX-10 480 and 960 fps capabilities. Note that the resolution drops off to 1080 or even 720 and there is color fringing. Still worth it to watch those beautiful wing movements. And if you like dragonflies: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l7LHll7mU9E.html. The Hairy Dragonfly at 0:45 would really be better at 60fps, but the resolution of the other clips trumps that problem for me. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos, and must admit, envy the great opportunities you have. Rob
