A thematic analysis of Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). If you have a question please ask below and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you disagree with my interpretation please be polite and state your case with examples. This is a learning experience for everyone and I am happy to be proven incorrect if that be the case. By attempting suicide, he beat the critic. She had no choice but to give it a good review or else her reputation would be ruined. We even see her defeat when she storms out of the theater after the standing ovation. Favorite part about the movie

Really what Birdman is bout, is mans battle with his ego (in this case a flying superhero) through various stages of suffering he awakens, and identifies himself with not what his ego thinks or tells him to be. But what he truly is, a Consciousness being. Far surpass any mental label or justification, he is free from an suffering he once had. What you accept you go beyond

Thanks for making this video. A friend of mine despises this film as he thinks it's just Inarritu being overly artsy and having a poor comment on superhero films and washed up actors. But what I initially thought of the film (a character study of a tortured soul who doesn't get life and is selfish) and your video make me realize what this is truly about and I respect that.

i hated the ending the first time i watched it because i noticed the intentional allusions to schizophrenia throughout the film, and the implication that he actually wasn’t experiencing an extreme episode the whole time pissed me tf off. like... what is that saying? literally nothing. but then i thought about it and realized that sam’s reaction could’ve just been him imagining what her reaction would’ve been after he jumped and flew. but in reality, he fell to his death thus tragically yet perfectly concluding the film-exposing the ego for its intrinsic absurdity and allowing riggan to die, finally, fulfilled. i like that ending much better.

What's amazing is how self-referential the film is to Michael Keaton himself, who successfully did everything he could to not be typecast because of the Batman films he did, but a lot of actors, and actresses weren't as successful of getting beyond typecasting. I'm sure many of them wanted to tell that basic premise in a film, but who could have conveyed that collective angst, and frustration better than Michael Keaton? Allegorically the film in terms of catharsis, is allegorically similar to what historians call a counterfactual ("what if"), and Keaton through a lot of soul searching knew he could have easily gone down the road of Riggan, struggling to be taken seriously.

Awesome review and analysis, to be honest I've seen this movie 5-6 times, love it, but I've never really dug into the meaning as I've always just enjoyed it so much for the story and performances. You make compelling and detailed assessments. I like your contrast between M. Keaton and E. Norton, both sides of the same coin, and equally unfulfilled if they don't embrace their own reality/blessings.

The truth behind fame is that once you're on top, you are only going to be there for a short time. Until you become simply a relic of the past.
@neville_bamshoot
@neville_bamshoot 8 лет назад
It's about your perception of fame. If you want the fame, almost always it doesn't last when you get it. Famous people who didn't necessarily want fame, or are more common or like normal people are always more popular than those who are superficial. That relate-ability is so important for anything that wants you to buy it. Literally anything. If the product wants the consumers' money it's going to have some factor of relate-ability about it, one-way-or-another. Inanimate objects usually use marketing to relate to you. Morale of the story: if you're relatable and you humanise yourself, I'm not saying you're immortal but, you're a lot more likely to be.

Birdman is the perfect (it isn't perfect) movie because it can't be done any other way, it's almost impossible. And that's not singing its praises. The way the characters talk, the way they walk, and run, and squawk, this shit can't be attempted by other films that don't have Birdman's exact plot. The plot is the saving grace, the leverage to what could be a trainwreck. The reason I know this is because I've seen it done before and it's obvious and it's atrocious. What's best is that all the actors are interchangeable. God, it's lucky they landed on this selection.

Then as his daughter looked out the window she covers her mouth in awe as a tear runs down her cheek,, and right at that point the hospital monitor flat lines with the familiar sound of beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....

the only thing that makes sense to me is that it wasn’t actually her-it was him imagining her reaction to him flying, but in reality he fell to his death and died a happy man. much more consistent and conclusive. (it just makes no sense for him to not be schizophrenic given that it literally showed him being walked in on during an episode and he’s actually breaking shit with his hands and not his mind.)

+bob polo Yeah, I try to shorten it if there's something being said, but sometimes I can't get around it without killing speed or flow. I'm working on making sure I know where my notes will go along with my scripts though. Thanks.

Mediocre, muddled analysis. Simply put, Birdman is about a big movie star who is also a mediocre actor and a pseudo intellectual but who wants to evolve into something bigger, grander than his established accomplishments allow. He sees the shallowness in his film work and wants to reach for the stars. He knows that there is a deeper meaning to life and he has a passion to articulate it. However he is held back by fate which is represented here by his own personal limitations. It is, therefore, a comedy about an overreacher. It is also simultaneously a tragedy about a good man whose fatal flaw is hubris. We identify with Birdman because we too wish to transcend our hum drum experience, to reach for something better, the American dream , in any of its guises.
