This video was made as part of the long-running avian life history study at Kinabalu Park HQ led by Dr. Thomas Martin of the University of Montana. Please check out more bird nesting videos on the Martin Lab channel here... ru-vid.com/show-UCY5m26fTANGh8q5xlbW0hCw You will notice that many of the birds in this video are "color-banded", meaning they have a unique combination of an aluminum band and three color bands on their legs. These color bands allow us to identify individual birds in the field simply by seeing them. This is incredibly useful for many research purposes, but the most important is that they allow us to calculate annual adult survival, which gives us an estimate of how long these species live. Color-banding at this site has revealed that tropical birds generally live longer than temperate birds, but there is huge variation in survival among tropical birds, and this has great influence on the traits that these birds have evolved. This knowledge has led to many peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals such as Science, Nature Climate Change, Ecology Letters, Functional Ecology, The American Naturalist, and many more.
Thank you for a video of excellent quality which lets anyone with access to Internet see these wonderful birds. Thank you also for the links to the Martin Lab channel and to the journal articles.
The efforts made by foreigners in studying birds in Mt Kinabalu is very welcomed indeed.. this will surely encourage locals to take up ornithology as a field of study.. there are very few locals who are trained in that field
Wonderful Video, I climbed up this gentle giant mountain about 10 years ago and such a beautiful to see so many different species of birds, I thoroughly enjoyed this video and thanks for producing and sharing with us. Best wishes from UK
The effort beyond this making of the video definitely is not that easy as we see it with ease at our own comfortable zone.....heartfelt royal salute to the team for this phenomenal video. God bless. All the best.
I was amazed at the large number of banded birds, obviously part of Dr Martin's research. Thank you for putting up the video and making me desire to visit yet ANOTHER place for natural history!
You should definitely visit Mt. Kinabalu and Sabah! Our decade of banding these long-lived tropical birds has resulted in so many birds of the park HQ being banded that photographers are often frustrated that so many of their subjects are wearing bands. I empathize, but feel that the scientific output of this project has made it well worth it.
@@TRForrester I'm a microbiologist myself at the University of Indianapolis and life-long naturalist. I have locally done some research monitoring the chytrid fungus in local amphibians. I also lead spring term naturalist trips to Costa Rica and Ecuador. I suppose if I could find a way to make it affordable for students Borneo would be right up there. Anyway, I understand your need to band birds. If the bands REALLY bother the bird photographers there is always photoshop to clean them up!
Birds something very beautiful an some Birds very creative an intelligent you have to tracking after some birds to see how the bird functioning by building the net feed the little chicks go hunting and bring food home sometime we don't understand how things working but I guess this is an instinct that coming from nature which is still the bird must have some scale to do all this I like this video and this is similar to what I think in my opinion an of course God bless the birds6
Fascinating & beautiful birds...some proud parents in this video...I thought the baby woodpecker that stuck his head out was cute....felt sorry for the Momma bird setting on her eggs getting soaking wet. 😍
Ada kok mas nama lokal nya, bahkan tergantung daerah/setiap daerah beda penyebutan namanya, kalo di vidio tidak di sebutkan nama lokalnya mungkin karna beda daerah beda nama jadi mereka mungkin menghindari perbedaan pendapat🙏✌
Hope that Bornean Whistler chick survived it's huge meal... thank you for sharing. I grew up in Sabah and never realised there was this variety of bird life . I will definitely take a trip to Kinbabalu Park Headquarters next time I visit (and maybe I'll finally climb the mountain..) :)
You should definitely climb the mountain, it is lots of fun and an absolutely stunning landscape! You should also spend at least a few days exploring the huge network of beautiful trails around the park headquarters. Many of the birds are secretive and hard to see, so I recommend hiring a local guide to help you spot lots of cool birds!
Thank you so much for a hard work and great videos and explanations! I hope these habitats will be saved further on, regarding enormous amount of logging on these islands, for planting the oil palm trees...
These montane birds are safe as they are protected within Kinabalu Park and the mountains are too steep to clear for oil palm. Although the lowland birds face considerable threat from the clearing of land for oil palm, Sabah has done a MUCH better job at protecting large areas of lowland rainforest compared to Indonesian Borneo.
