It is grey-brown with white, black, chestnut bars and markings; legs are dull red, male has spurs which are used for attacking. They are determined fighters and have been used in the sport of Partridge Fights. The call is very loud with variations, their local name of “teetar” is based on their calls, repeated “Ka-tee-tar -ka- tee-tar”. The calls could also sound like - “patila-patila…” or “teen taka- teen taka”, Breeds during Mar - Oct, on ground; the nest is well camouflaged, eggs 4-9 white-buff. They avoid inbreeding. It was believed that if a partridge flies on your left side in Southward direction it is a good omen.
पुर पेठत जो बाम ते, तीतर दक्षिण जाए ,
कहथि डाक शुभ शकुन यह , मिलतो सब मन भाय I
It is not a strong flier hence legend has it that a partridge gets caught after three flights. Since time immemorial it has been used as good table bird. Due to fallacious policies and rules it is still illegally poached and served.
