A burnt forest presents a unique environment for birds. In this video from the PBS series BirdWatch, directed by Charlie Rattigan, Dick Hutto, Professor of Ornithology, leads us on a journey of discovery in a recently burnt forest in western Montana. Dick explains the role that fire plays in the lives of many bird species. Along the way, we encounter mountain bluebirds, a Townsend Solitaire, northern flickers, and the hero of our story the Black-backed woodpecker.
