I have always maintained that Nilsson sounded much better in the theater (and unprofessional tapes) than she did on the Solti-Culshaw monstrosities. Even here, you can feel the innate warmth and roundness of her tone. These were missing from the commercial recordings, where she sounds steely and shrill. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw her in the theater, and I said, “Wow, she sounds so much better without a mic stuck in her throat.”
