The Drawing of The Birkenhead Tram depicts the horse drawn tram at the corner of Argyle Street and Cleveland Street. I spent my early years not 50 metres from that spot. The Woodside Floating Roadway shows the road that, even into the early 1960s ,carried the Irish cattle up to the Lairage. It is best not to dwell on their fate following that trip. The archways that can be seen to the left of the roadway was the discharge of the huge "nodding donkey" pump that drained the tunnel for the electric trains to and from Liverpool. The force of the flow of that discharge was both phenomenal and terrifying to my infant self. I was a strong willed child and my sister, in whose care I was generally in, discovered that the only way of gaining my cooperation was the threat: "I'll take you down the floating road bridge!". Occasionally, an enterprising cow would escape from the migration from the boat to certain death. They would sometimes make it as far as Cleveland Street or Chester Street. One even passed my school at Pilgrim Street . Much to the delight of my fellow pupils. It was finally captured on the steps of the County Court. We were told that it would be transported to a farm in Wales.
Brilliant, although I'm so glad I didn't witness the lairage. I do however remember the smell along New Chester road, although at that time, I didn't realise what that smell was!
One thing that always fascinated me at Woodside station was the lift's 25 people or would enter the lift and taken down to the underground while those waiting for the lift would see a large long glass bottle with a model of the lift marking it's progress everything was more interesting in the 50s 60s ....now 2022 is a very clinical life
OMG Talk about memories, I was born in Patten Street. I was one of 13 kids, just at the bottom of our street was the Crane the Mamoth it used to berth there near Abels sand and Ranks Flour Mills, I went to Our Ladies School and then St Hughs ( THE YOSSERS ) lol Happy Memories of a bygone age along with the rear sight of Biddy Hill lol
Yay, at last I get a pic of the docks :) my great grandad and his son worked on the docks :) and Ive always wanted to see an old photo of it. Thankyou for sharing x
Although it almost definitely isn't, that two-tone MG Magnette saloon parked in Beaufort Rd (1:49 in the video) could have been mine. Lovely to see again and re-vivify the (very) old memories. My granddad used to work in the flour mills there. Rank, Buchanan and Appleby's Ocean mills - don't know why the signs only said Rank. Perhaps the other two couldn't fit.🤔 Thanks for posting.
I used to work in Bridge Street and I had to pass the abattoir and the smell always made me feel sick. The passport office was in Bridge Street and it was there I obtained my first passport. I remember feeling very grown up but I was only 16 ! Happy days that will stay with me forever.
Yeah used to stink to high heaven. British Leather tanning the hides. Plus the pong from Levers as it opened its gates into the mersey under new chester road in port sunlight. A bus ride through sunlight then passed the tan yard certainly woke you up in the morning. The irony having blocks of flats opposite the tan yard 🤣🤣🤣
Park street. How nice to see St Laurence's RC church and what we used to call the priest's house in Park street. I used to live in Kent Place which backed on to St Laurences school. Sadly the Diocese sold it all off.
Love your videos, I miss home so much. Makes me feel a little closer to home. Now living in Australia (old work friend of your aunts, Clatterbridge hospital).
Takes me back over 60 years when I was a little scally roaming these streets before most of them were demolished and believe it or not though I knew them like the back of my hand I never knew their names.
Just wondering if I ever new your dad as I too worked for Chaz Jones, started working there in 1974, a place that didn't like changing with the times, and we had to push hand carts from job to job for many years even after everyone else had progressed to trucks and Van's but still have some fond memories.
This music is totally annoying, badly edited, it ruins the experience of every video it is used on which is a pity as these videos are great. Anyway, thank you for the visual output, much appreciated.
I know about the music but the app I use doesn't let me have a choice of no music. I make the videos for the photos I collect, I love them all. Please watch my videos with sound off as they are much better without
@@jaynephennah53 I have watched a good amount of your videos with my family and will continue to watch them regardless of the audio, these videos are our own history. I see a lot of the streets that my Nan used to tell me all about and also what my Mum speaks of now. I remember many of those streets as being half bombed streets with many plots of rubble when I was a child in the 1970's, especially around Oak amd Eldon Gardens, The Angel Inn and The Crown, The Meadows and other such parts of central Birkenhead. I find that I kind of miss those old slums, tjey are a part of my life and memories that are no longer present. I have lived away from Wirral for a few decades now and I no longer recognise Birkenhead as my hometown that I was raised in, it is a totally new town that I really don't know whenever I visit family there. Thanks for your videos, they bring out the sentimental side out of me.
@@redlioness6627 it's a sad state of affairs at the moment in Birkenhead. I have done 17 walks around various areas of Birkenhead, looking for places, down alleys. Lived here all my life, home of my family going back to my granny Payne, my nans nan. I spent lots of time with my nan, loved looking in books she got from library showing old places. I then got fascinated in maps. We still have 146 listed buildings in Birkenhead but what I love most is my walkers. They tell me their memories, of days gone by. I did these walks within a year to see if there was a need for the walks and let's just say, I have yet to walk alone! I am admin assistant on Facebook group Birkenhead memories and my source of some of my material. Birkenhead is in my blood!
@@jaynephennah53 That is sad, and yes, I have seen Birkenhead Memories but I tend to avoid social media sites if I can. It interferes with my ability to play my musical instruments, youtube is my main form of social media activity.
