😃 " CONGRATULATIONS BIRMINGHAM!.... I loved seeing all of the great ' attention to details ' given unto The Lyric Theatre's restoration. Which makes Me even more excited about the upcoming $35 million restoration of (Peoria, IL) My hometown's, long abandoned and dilapidated, ' Madison Theater ' back to former grandeur. "

People today don't give a flying you know what about those great old places. In 1948 on through the early 50's several of us kids were regulars at most of the old theaters in town. The Lyric was my favorite because in those days it was where the cowboy movies were shown. Great actors like Bob Steel, Wild Bill Elliot, Bill Boyd, Gene Autry etc. were our favorites. I remember all of the theaters very well. I am now 85 years of age and all of my best memories are of Birmingham. Bruce Howard, MG

It is wonderful to know the Lyric and the Alabama have survived. Folks now would not realize how beautiful they were.

Love your videos! Especially the ones of downtown Birmingham. Some of my most fond memories of Christmases when I was small are of going to the Loveman’s and Pizitz department stores downtown to their Christmas Wonderlands. Such a great place to visit at that time. Thanks for the videos and allowing some great reminiscing! I wish there was a local place now that did that type thing at Christmas. Children today would be so ecstatic. I’m sure most of them they have never seen anything like what I’m talking about. Thanks again!!

Those stores were such wonderful places at Christmas. Breakfast with Santa, wasn't that at Pizitz? The store windows all decorated for the holidays. Good memories! I appreciate your comment. Thank you for watching!

I saw a few forgettable science fiction/horror movies there in the 1950's: "Earth vs.the Flying Saucers," "The Werewolf," "The Land Unknown," and others in that cultural niche. The last scheduled movie played the Lyric in the spring of 1960. Then in the late 1960's/early1970's it was briefly revived as an art house, the "Grand Bijou"; and then later a porn house, the "Roxy" or "Foxy." Closed for good around 1976. There's a famous clip in the closing credits of "Stay Hungry" With Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jeff Bridges, and Sally Field (1976) showing a bunch of body-builders posing on the 18th street fire escapes of the Lyric, which were still intact at that time [1]. They were removed in the restoration. The Foxy/Roxy marquee is visible on the sidewalk below. 1. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PpDsC7gICj0.html at 2:23, almost the very end.

It is good to see the Lyric restored. I could have never imagined how beautiful it was if it hadn't been. Thanks for the history info!
