The Camp Hill Line is a project that has been proposed for the best part of the last two decades by Birmingham City Council, however after being postponed for a few years, the project is finally expected to open at the end of this year. In this video, I'll be taking a look at the areas served by the proposed project, the benefits and negatives of this project, and how I believe the project will impact public transport within Birmingham. If you like this video make sure to like, subscribe and share this video as it massively helps me out when you do! I really hope you will enjoy or have enjoyed the video!
As with most of my videos, there are images in here that aren't my own, and so all copyright goes to their respective owners.

This video popped up on my RU-vid this evening. How interesting. I applaud your video and the detail in it. I respect the effort I am a Brummie born in Acocks Green who taught in Hendon and Whitefield School next to Brent Cross North West London for 5 years before returning home. I have lived in Stirchley for 43 years and taught in Kings Norton for 21 years. This video really is interesting and reflects the fascinating history of this part of Birmingham. Some helpful local pronunciation corrections: 1/ river Ray not Ree. 2/ Bordesley not Bordersley (I am a Birmingham City season ticket holder and we use this station after games for a quick connection to town.) 3/ Moseley not Moserley. I voted for Pineapple because Bournville station (which I use a lot) is right next door to Stirchley high street. And a more relevant point: connections between rail and bus in the West Midlands means 2 tickets and double cost. A unified ticketing system is needed for this to make sense. A visit to Prague, which I do often, is a typical example of how to do it right.

An interesting presentation. It does appear to be a cost cutting exercise to avoid electrifying the Camp Hill line. W.r.t. to the comment that the tunnel near Moseley is too tight for the overhead line, note that some sections being electrified north of Cardiff are being dealt with using long neutral sections to avoid excessive work on tunnels, in particular Caerphilly Tunnel, or on certain overbridges.

University Station is a modern addition. There were Somerset Road and Church Road stations between Selly Oak and Five Ways. The original line was single track and went to Central Goods station before the Five Ways station was constructed and the line extended to New Street as a new station alongside the existing one.

Originally, platforms 1 and 2 were for trains along the West Suburban line to New Street, whilst platforms 3 and 4 were for the Camp Hill line. Over the years it has been normal to route express trains from Derby and the North East to Bristol and the South West via the Camp Hill line and avoid New Street in rush hours and Bank Holidays. The Camp Hill line has never been closed to passengers, only to stopping trains. Since the creation of the Cross-City line, they're changed the track formation, to allow for southbound electric locals to cross over the two middle lines to get into platform 4, and they've locked the doors going down to platforms 2 and 3.

As I recall, there is no platform 6 at Moor St (the UK's best railway station!) it's just a track but I suppose they could tack some new platform on there. As much as I think this is a good idea, it won't be until the cords to Moor St open that you'll really see the value of the line as it takes on intercity services. Electrification would have been good and maybe battery operated trains could be used to bridge the gap through that tunnel in the same way that the trams have to rely on batteries for unnelectrified sections.

There is no need to build an additional spur at Bordesley. With diesel multiple units, the trains could reverse at Small Heath along the already-existing connection. which the New Street to Camp Hill lines will be using. But New St. is already overcrowded. How are they going to thread two additional trains per hour into the current working timetable without reducing services elsewhere? You forget that the Midland line through Camp Hill was originally part of the Midland Railway, and, before they redesignated it the Cross-City Line and sent the services through to Lichfield, the pattern of services was from Worcester to Derby, which also served the now-closed stations at Saltley, Bromford Bridge and Castle Bromwich, the reopening of which has been promised for as long as the Camp Hill line reopening. By the way, moves to reopen the Camp Hill line didn't start in the 2010s ...they started in the 1960s.

Thank you for this video. Those platforms at Kings Norton are disused through platforms used by freight trains and Cross Country expresses. The reduction from 6tph to 4 tph was the Covid timetable not to accommodate the Camp Hill trains. The River Rea is pronounced Ray. Kings Norton Station is in Cotteridge but probably only locals know that. The idea of diverting East Midlands trains into Moor Street was to give a connection to HS2 as Moor Street is right next to Curzon Street Station and the concourses will be connected by a footbridge. Andy Street is a metro mayor of the West Midlands not a city mayor. Have seen one of your London videos yesterday and have now clicked Subscribe.

I don't think KNN is going to be the terminus of the Camphill line due to the complex north and south junction, not many people requiring the camp hill service and the timetabling is gonna be hell as train pass through the station from every 5 to 15 mins. I think that they should terminate train in like the worstershire area as they are less busy. (I am a Kings Norton local)

@@legoisthebest001SCR it will be - there are internal timetables that exist for the Camp Hill line, though future ambitions include extensions to Longbridge/Redditch (along with electrification). and yes the frequency was retained with the 20 minute gap used for turnaround for Camp Hills.

The suggestion of additional lines between Moor St. and Snow Hill makes no sense. Moor St. was built as an extension to Snow Hill because it was impossible to add extra lines through the tunnel, which used to be a cutting, but was boarded over when they built the Great Western Arcade and the North Western Arcade. It was impossible to add new lines then, and even more impossible now.

@pauladdenbrooke1125
@pauladdenbrooke1125 3 месяца назад
The reopening of this line has been studied several times before 2005, and the case was very weak, mainly becouse a lot of jounneys on the 50 were short distance ones. All it is likely to do is take longer journeys off the highly successful bus routes. A lot of cars on this road have come from further down the corridor, and if they dont use the cross city line, they wont use this one.
@somenorthlondoner
@somenorthlondoner 3 месяца назад
Not too sure really as I’m obviously not from Birmingham but I wonder whether a park & ride facility (or something of the sort) could ever be established at a station on the line to help minimise the number of people travelling into town by car and instead change onto a train? The 50 is a highly successful route, no question about it. Definitely a route I’ll be covering in the future. The thing is, just because a bus route is successful doesn’t mean train journeys shouldn’t be allowed to replace journeys currently made on those bus routes. A very good example of this I can think of is the 38 from Hackney and Clapton into London, an integrated ticketing system and an improved reliability and frequency on the North London Line makes it far more appealing to change at Highbury & Islington for the tube to reach Central London for anyone travelling from Dalston/Hackney/Balls Pond Road. As a result, (and probably due to the bendybus deconversion) the bus route has seen a drop in passenger numbers, but at least they’ve moved to other methods of faster transportation! :)

@SuperSupermanX1999
@SuperSupermanX1999 Месяц назад
Taking journeys off the bus routes will be a benefit in and of itself for many commuters, as at present the roads between these suburbs and the city centre are extremely tight and frequently congested. A rail option, with decent capacity, that removes the need for even a decent proportion of those journeys to be on the road, will free that route up quite substantially for the shorter distance bus and car journeys that you describe.

Moseley resident here. I'm sceptical that there would be a problem electrifying the line through the tunnel. This idea came up in a local forum, which later published images of a works train in the tunnel which suggested to me that there was plenty of clearance. The tunnel is very short and was only built by the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway in 1840 to reduce the impact of noise and smoke on the nearby St Mary's Church. I'm sure many local residents were unaware that a railway existed at this point before the hoardings went up for the station reconstruction. The Midland Railway, which took over the Birmingham and Gloucester, was given permission to remove the tunnel as early as the 1860s. The No 50 bus is certainly very frequent, but it's really not great to use at very busy times. I'm absolutely confident that the Camp Hill reopening will be extremely successful, even with the initial half-hourly service (just memorise the simple timetable and plan journeys to fit). However, it will really come into its own when the Bordesley chords are built. From Moseley it will be about ten minutes to Moor Street, which will be so close to the HS2 terminus that they will effectively be one station. From there, it will be about 45 minutes to Euston (and initially 38 minutes to Old Oak Common for the Elizabeth Line). Because the London media generally have no interest in what happens in Birmingham, the fact that the city (and surrounding region) is undergoing a remarkable rail renaissance passes largely under the national radar. The only downside I see to the Camp Hill reopening is that there is likely to be an increase in street parkng around the stations, as it's a deliberate choice not to provide park-and-ride.
