Here are the three calculations to remember: 1/30th = 30sec 1/15th = 1 minute 1/8th = 2 minutes KNOW YOUR GEAR - Some 10-stop filters may vary slightly! Hope this helps - Gary
Ha ha bugger! I said to my wife a couple of days ago that I wish there was a photography chat show on RU-vid and she said "well, why don’t you start one, it’ll be a first!” Great work as usual Gary.
Oooh that bacon and egg looked good, never mind the Tunnocks wafer, happy days Gary. Enjoyed seeing the old buildings reminded me of your Lewis & Harris video, great stuff. Made a mental note about the 10 Stop settings, will try them out tomorrow night on a wee field trip, cheers
Gary, The 10 stop exposure calc shortcut is brilliant! The resulting long exposures show your mastery of the technique. Ah the sweet sense of exploration achieved in going where one "may not be allowed" to go! You caught some iconic imagery there, my friend! Thank-You, Mike
the 1/8 and 1/15 tip is great, I followed your other basics on the big stopper and never fooled around with formulas and that stuff, and I definitely like the original sky with smooth water
Great video, brilliant tip about long exposures - I will definitely try that with my gear. Superb shots as usual. Keep up the excellent work. Your videos are fun and instructive - that is surely what most people want.
As usual Garry great location stunning scenery and good information. And what I call a brilliant attitude to your work is what makes it fun! looking forward to the next vid just keep them coming B.
Brilliant vlog Gary well put together, What an interesting location and your long exposure images are stunning👍 that’s a brilliant tip for the 1min and 2min exposures 👍
Been there, but oh dear when I sorted my pics out it was 16 years ago and there were notices to keep off and barbed wire around every entrance to the pier! You did get some lovely pictures of the pier so we'll done, the bacon and eggs looked good too! Thanks for sharing your photography with us...
Thanks for the tip. Your photos made that place look a whole lot better than it actually is. I don't know what y'all say over there about that pier but in Texas we'd say "seen better days".
Sad to see the demise of something that was beautifully built. Must have been quite an attraction in its day. Intriguing end to your vlog Gary and look forward to seeing more of whats to come
Amazing Gary! I’ve managed to capture a few images on a boat at high tide there but never gone onto ‘shore’ 👍 I’ve shared this video with the Birnbeck Pier Restoration facebook page as I think they’d find this really interesting. Cheers.
Hi Craig, I'm not sure they'll find this interesting. If anything it just highlights how bad dangerous the place could be. It's an amazing location and it's such a shame to see it in its current state.
Gary Gough Yep, a real shame about the Pier. The only real danger there is trying to walk along the old iron/wood rails or getting stuck if the tide comes in (does so VERY fast here!). Thought it was one of your best videos (perhaps because I live just 10 mins away). Cheers.
Gary your making a habit of looking around old & decaying places, where's next Westminster!! Love the shots, great b-roll and made a note of the exposure calc, diamond tip.
Well done on yet another great production, great location, quality images and just the right amount of humour. I know from personal experience that the Tunnocks bar wouldn't have lived to see another day!
First and last shots are mega! We have an abandoned Iron Pier here too (currently being restored) but nowhere near are atmospheric as this one. Just bought a 10 stop filter, so that was good timing and valuable info, cheers 😃👍
I used to go on that pier as a child. I think it closed to the public in the early 90s needing repairs. There was talk of a casino and hotel that never happened and it was left to rot. The lifeboat used it until very recently with one strip of planks maintained to walk on. A real shame. I think it's so far gone that one big storm and it'll be lost forever.
There was a piece in my paper this week about a chap who was caught attempting to steal the last clock face from that tower. He was spotted on CCTV, so the owners probably know you've been there Gary!
Hi Neil. I know I saw it. The gate was ajar and I was very respectful. I just wanted to show the state of the poor place. Thank you for saying though. I'm sure it's not a fat old bloke walking and talking that they need to be worried about.
There are a few creepy peers in power. Sad to see this pier in such a state, but I bet it look amazing when on fire. Some useful advice with shutter timing. Thanks Gary.
My big stopper is actually 10 2/3rd stops (match histogram with and without filter to test). Just saying because your excellent tip may need adjustment for some folks! I understand that some big stoppers can vary downwards as well so may only be a 9 or so stop filter. Hi Gaz, how's the arse?😀
lol, he's all good ta. I was working with him last night :) True re the calculations. My 15-stop is roughly a stop out. It's just about knowing your equipment
Hi Gary to learn a bit more the one show did a piece on it very intresting it on you tube. great video, another place is st annes jetty check out the old photos.
Thoroughly enjoy your videos Gary, very authentic and personable "in feel". Definitely think you deserve an even bigger audience. Best of luck with this endeavour! /Fox
People like you get photographers a bad name. I can't believe you pitched your tent in the bus shelter. Great video and gorgeous long exposure images Gary 👍
Nice vlog again Gary, and what a great location that is... I was featured in DigifotoPro magazine this quarter (with among other thins a photo we discussed on FB (2 different exposures of seascape) and one thing in the interview that I pointed out was; get away from the fuss. panoramas, long exposures etc, it`s not so complex as a lot of photographers would like to shine out..
Greeting from Canada. Thank you for sharing your tips and photography with the rest of us. Very inspiring content if you ask me. Also I am looking forward to the chat show. I noticed some time ago that there is no TV shows abut photography for example. You can find some about gardening, cooking, fishing, camping etc but nothing on photography. I also have a question. In your video you had your IS on when the camera was on tripod. Is that something you recommend doing? I always thought that it is a good idea to turn it off in that situation because it can actually introduce motion blur due to the feedback loop overreacting to a tiny camera shake. Thanks again for sharing your photography with us. Marek
Hi Merek, firstly, thank you for watching. I'm hoping the chat show works well. I have finished recording the first one and it went really well. It's all in the edit though, GULP! Canon Pro Lenses aren't affected by long shutter speeds so mine is always left on. Some lenses react very differently, so it's always advisable to switch them off. Hope this makes sense :) Greeting from the UK 👍
Cracking image & video footage, wonderful clarity on some of those long exposures. Have been to Birnbeck many times but never ventured over to the place as 1. Not sure how safe it is 2. Not really an urbex explorer type person. Glad to know you got back off there safe n sound. Whilst high tide was about I would have ventured 400 yards left of the old pier and done some long exposures on the pool looking towards Knightsone - makes for some decent shots (one to remember should you venture that way again) - One of my crappy efforts. (500px.com/photo/41408692/blue-for-you-by-alan-coles?ctx_page=18&from=user&user_id=249578) Good luck with the chat show.
I am just starting to try taking long exposures and I too noticed (Like WHOAA below) that stabilisation appeared to be on - what's best for Long Exp ? My problem so far has been soft images when a bit windy.

I always just remember 1/30 second equals 30 seconds (easiest to remember straight off) then just work the extra stops from there on I've got a bit of extra thought though, because my 10 stop is actually around 10.5-10.7 stops. Still, not used an app to calculate for a while now
Cheers Gary. Great videos and awesome channel. Let me know if you're ever down here on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast or Gower Peninsula in Wales. Great to meet up
I’m a big fan but if I’m honest, I wasn’t into this video as much as most of your others. Sorry, it just seemed too busy for me with all of the editing effects and the jerky video at times. Your enthusiasm always makes me smile however and I do appreciate the tips and the effort that you put forth each time. Cheers!
Just noticed that you had Lens stabilization on rather then off. I'm not a 100% sure but isn't it better to have it off on a tripod, especially doing long exposures. Never the less great photos, like the music too!

I was turning my focus to manual. I always leave me IS on. Canon pro lenses don't suffer issues when exposing for long times. Just YT regurgitated nonsense.
I was thinking the same, except of course if the tripod was prone to slight movement in a high wind, particularly as Gary was using a 1 or 2 minute shutter speed. PS great images as usual Gary.
Well done, you extracted the maximum out of what looked like an uninspiring location but your finished photos were really good, should we be concerned with your obsession with public conviences !!! good job well done as usual
What an amazing subject to photograph. Those long exposures are just fabulous. But ... why have they blocked the acces to the pier ... and didn't do the same a little further away ... not logic isn't it?! 🙂
Because the access is only there across the sand when the tide is very low and not for long then. It's not safe to try it and i believe there are signs telling you not to cross, people get stuck or stranded frequently. But it's a different risk to walking down the pier along the planks as these are likely to just give way.
It's a fascinating place and you got some great photos. BUT it is in a terrible state after years of storm damage (not fire) and access is definitely not encouraged. If you walk over to the island at low tide there is a good chance you will get cut off by the huge tidal range of the Bristol Channel and will be stuck there for 12 hours, or cause a lifeboat callout. Sadly I cannot see it being restored, it would cost millions and nobody has worked out how to pay for it. It will collapse into the sea eventually.
Hi Steve, All that lovely history is just being washed away day after day. Such a shame indeed. I went out as the tide receded so I knew I was safe. I bet loads of people get stuck there though. Gorgeous place
Great video and great subject for shooting but my goodness, it just shows how poorly neglected this place is and sadly fairly typical of some of UK’s coastal towns.
