Birth of an Atoll 

Discover the incredible story of how atolls are formed over millions of years! Atolls start as underwater volcanoes known as seamounts. Over time, repeated eruptions cause the seamount to rise above the ocean, forming an island. As corals grow around the island, the volcano eventually goes dormant and begins to sink. However, the coral reefs keep growing, outpacing the island’s descent, and eventually form a ring of coral around a central lagoon where the volcano once stood.
