I wanted to add in case anyone from the company sees this, that the In-N-Out employee that was working at the replica on Saturday when we visited was fantastic. She was really knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
That company store was amazing! Some of those items they sell are pretty creative. I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything about the Bible verses on the cups and place mats. Or is it Chick-Fil-A that does that? The crossed palm trees fact was interesting. I didn’t know that was from a movie. Another great video!
Thank you. In-N-Out does the bible verses. I didn't even think about it when we got the food we were so hungry. That didn't start until the late 70s/early 80s when one of the sons took over.
That was the In-N-Out of my high school years, middle 70s. There were picnic tables with a metal awning that backed up to the freeway. A few years later I worked in Baldwin Park as a fireman so it was back to store #1 for a snack after a fire.
Yet another great FUN post! I got a real kick out of the sign saying "No Delay"! Hahahaha! Try that at the Mira Mesa location! :-o The place is so popular that the drive-thru by itself jambs up a big mall parking lot. Sure tastes great. Learning about the reference to Mad Mad World is a big bonus for me. "It's a big W I tell ya!" I know what I am eating later today. Thanks for your unique spin Mr. Adventures!
Another great video filled with fun facts! Sometimes, when you see the crazy long wait lines, it is like being in a mad, mad, mad, world and it's better because you do get the treasure of great burgers and fries at the end.
Now, that’s what a hamburger is all about! Some years ago watched an episode of Huell Howser’s California ‘s Gold where he visited the replica In n Out and the University, gift store, and restaurant. After watching, my husband and I had to go. It was great fun. Thanks for highlighting this California treasure.
Huell Howser visited the replica? I think he died before it was built, unless there was a previous replica. I wish there was an easy way to watch his old episodes.
@@SidetrackAdventures You can find the Ca Gold episode on Chapman college’s web site. CA Gold episode #146. Originally broadcast May 31, 2010. After he died his video archive was donated to Chapman College in Orange. Ca Gold is archived on their web site and available to watch. The college has a Huell Howser museum on Campus, too. California’s Gold continues to be shown on KCET in LA. i’m starting to think that I saw that episode after he died. After rewatching that episode on Chapman’s web site, company reps were discussing with Huell wanting to create a replica of the original, I consulted my husband after bringing this up if he remembered seeing the replica on the north side of the freeway, and he distinctly remembers seeing it. So, to sum it up, The original 2010 episode discussed the idea of creating a replica of the original In N Out and eventually they did because I did see. When exactly, I don’t know,
Fun info. I wasn't aware of the crossed palm tree. I'm floored at how long people are willing to wait for drive thru, frequently extending out of parking lot, down and around and keeps going. I no longer eat there, but when I did, I LOVED the price and the simplicity of the menu.
Someone else mentioned Huell Howser did an episode on In-N-Out so I had to search for it. Looks like he went to the same spot when the 1954 store was still up. That was really cool to see.
Back in the 80's, someone gave me about 25 In-N-Out bumper stickers and I took them home. My oldest son had seen people modiy them to say "In-N-Out urge. He modified several to sat "In-N-_Out Burrito" and put one on the bumper of my work truck. I drove around with it and one day a guy approached me and said, " Oh! They sell burritos too?" I laughed and told him it was created by my son. He had done such a good job, you couldn't see the mods unless you got really close and looked carefully. I miss my son. He died at Lake Havasu in June 2009.
I grew up in Pasadena going to In-N-OUT. Went to college in San Diego when the nearest In-N-Out was an hour away in Laguna Niguel. Still had to make the drive once a month!
I grew up in Montrose, Ca (North of Glendale...L.A. County) and our High School hang out (1983-1987) was the In-N-Out on Foothill Blvd in La Crescenta. It's still my favorite place for a cheese burger. Great video, I'm not to far from the location in the video so I'll go there
Interesting! I've seen this location in another video somewhere but didn't know much about the company's history. I could definitely use a potato washing machine. Much more fun and probably quicker. 😂 I'll still take my mid-west burger places though. While I do enjoy them now and again, try and I might I just couldn't get as into In-N-Out as some around here. 😅
@@SidetrackAdventures I can't remember if I actually ever had Culver's until I moved to Arizona. 😅 Growing up it was always Steak n' Shake. Something about the crispy edges and skinny fries. Are they the best? Nah, not really. I've had better but still reminds me of my childhood so y'know... That was always a plain cheeseburger, fries and lime freeze.
I remember seeing 1990's In-N-Out modified bumper stickers that removed the b and r changing In-N-Out Burger to In-N-Out urge. Immature yes but kind of funny. I love your informative and entertaining videos.
Beats the pants off McDonald's!! Too bad there's no In-N-Out in Oregon, that I know of. Tell you what, I'll trade two McDonald's from Oregon for one In-N-Out from California. No deal? How about three McDonald's? No? How about four McDonald's and a Wendy's? OK, hard bargain. Five McDonald's, two Wendy's, and a Dairy Queen? Oh, don't make me throw in Carl's Burgers!
I first heard of In-N-Out while still living at home in Imperial, CA, in the 1980's. Saw their bumper stickers a lot in those days, but back then they hadn't expanded much outside LA County. It wasn't until 1990 that I finally ate at an In-N-Out (I had started attending Cal Poly Pomona at the time), and I was hooked. I visited their store in Diamond Bar fairly regularly while I was in school, and became a lifelong fan. My usual order is a Double Double, animal style.
Just to the south of Old #1 & New #1 is one of their distribution centers and former location of the corporate HQ located on, I kid you not…..Hamburger Lane! 3279+PW Baldwin Park, California
The movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" was indeed his guiding influence, and he wanted to put up "Big Ws.", but supposedly, the movie studio wouldn't allow it. I call total BS on this (if even true) because, seriously, how can a studio prevent someone from planting palm trees that just happen to form a "W"? I would be interested to find whether the above is true, but it seems strange to love the film so much yet not plant the palms as a big W.
When I was a kid I grew up near the Diamond Bar In-n-Out and I think it was #15 one of the originals before they built dine-in ones. It is far better then other fast food restaurants.
Amazing a YT with the correct facts! Many videos say this replica is the original location! Which is false. As you mentioned the original location was demolished for the 10 freeway to be built!
@@SidetrackAdventures The story of her brother, Ritchie was his name I believe, who died in the plane that crashed approaching John Wayne Airport is a twist to the history of this company.
1970 a vegan burger was available, but you had to know to ask for it (secret). then the only menu items were the burgers, fries, and drink. Shakes were added about 1970? or a little later?
Double-Meat (Dbl-Dbl with no cheese), Animal, and Animal Fries for me. 🍔🍟 It’s interesting to note that, in addition to having so many employees at work, In-n-Out employees have always been paid better than almost any other fast-food chain, plus benefits that most don’t offer. They’re paid better, they’re treated better, and encountering a rude- or grumpy In n Out employee is unheard of. Likewise, complaints by employees are very rare, and are usually revealed to be fraudulent.
Grew up not too far from the one on Gale (by Hacienda BLVD) right off the 60 in hacienda heights. Double double with grilled onions. My brother would get animal style. Been to the one between Hesperia and Barstow a number of times as well as Kingman Arizona. Keep hearing one is coming here in New Mexico real soon for 10 years now...
Does americans not use any dip for thier fries. In Denmark most people use ketchup. Personally I use frie dip wich is a sort of bearnaise dip 🙂 Love from Denmark
see the size of that store? the real genius behind IN/N/OUT was leasing the pie shaped land that was right off a freeway onramp, and you could see the signage from miles up the freeway. No one else had a use for that land. you swung off the freeway , then turned immediately into the driveway and drove between two bldgs. no bigger than an outhouse! one for prep, one for orders, preparing and cooking.
I didn't know all that background about them. I remember please would drive to PHX from Tucson to get a burger. Then they finally opened here. I like the Double Double and a shake. I didn't like the fries , but now I sometimes order them. The employees are nice, and like that they support/ collect donations for some worthy causes. Didn't know there was a store. I like the shoes.
IN N Out should merge with Steak & Shake to be Steak & Shake In & Out. Sounds like a Chub Checker song. Seriously, I think these burger places need to get creative and start some new concepts to shake things up a bit. McD's, can't eat there anymore same for the other places, and Chik A Stick is out on personal grounds.
There's an In-N-Out two three blocks away from me here in Orem, Utah. I don't eat there very often but when I do I get the double double animal. I guess I should mention that there's no w palm trees here but I guess that's because palm trees don't do too well in this area.
They're good, but way overated to me. Not very filling either unless you get a 4×4 burger. There are better burgers, fries and shakes out there..some from hardly known places but they've had such a great rep for so long now that nothing is going to ever change that. Still better than McDonald's who also has a great reputation but lousy food. Interesting to me how not everybody notices the Bible verse on the bottom of their cups or how I've never heard much mention about it.
I used to go to that first in n out when I was in highschool back in the early 70s. The " no delay" sign should be removed. I skip going for lunch because it takes too long
I remember when I was a kid in Escondido the closest In-n-Out was in Laguna Niguel. I thought I was devoted, but to go all the way to Baldwin Park? You, sir, have my respect.
