Bishop Aukland was featured on the news this morning 3rd. March 2020, and the topic of conversation was the number of empty shops. Of all of the towns that have had their high streets pedestrianised, every one of them has died as far as atmosphere and thriving businesses goes. I have never seen a single one of them that was better off after pedestrianisation. It isn’t merely the result of internet shopping, which would be an understandable assumption, because I saw the results only a couple of years after traffic was rerouted from town centres. Yes, it has gotten worse as a result of rising business rates, but the decline began as soon as the novelty value subsided. There is only one way of being certain of breathing new life into a pedestrianised town, and that is to open it back up to traffic.

Odd choice of music, but interesting to see what looks like a thriving city center for "Bish", compared to Bish Vegas vid. Fiona Hill's memoir brought me here.
