This exclusive clip is from Episode 8 of CATHOLICISM, entitled A VAST COMPANY OF WITNESSES - THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS.
The story of the Church is told in the examples of those men and women who dedicated their lives to knowing and serving Jesus Christ. The Catholic Faith is made visible in real human lives.
Father Barron gives consideration to some of the Church's greatest heroes, and demonstrates how their extraordinary examples display both the passion and creative potential of the Catholic Church. Highlighting Katharine Drexel, Therese of Lisieux, Edith Stein, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Father Barron tells the story of the Church as a vast company of witness who are called by Christ to be a Communion of Saints.

Someone joked about me being a saint once. I was like, "Oh, I plan to be a saint. I don't necesarily plan to be canonized." I see in myself a desire, quietly looming, to be Saint Kathryn, to have devotions written of me. And I think that's the pride talking. Ultimately it's gonna be whatever glorifies God most. If He is exalted by having another invisible, unrecognized defender of the Church gathering the incense of the prayers of the faithful and presenting them to the canonized to be offered in their name--rather, in Jesus' name--then thy will be done, Lord. I am adamant, however, that the Church needs more female Doctors. To be a female Doctor you basically need three things: to be female, to be a canonized saint, and I guess to have written something universally relevant to the Church. So my plan is to either be one, or to inspire and aid and pray for others to become them.

One thing that kills me about Catholicism is the canonization of saints during the 1200s. Saint George and the Dragon? Or even worse St Hyacinth who was my patron saint when I got confirmed. St Hyacinth allegedly beat up a satyr (half-goat half-man) that climbs out of a tree during a pagan ritual. Can any rational person honestly believe that this happened? Then it dawns on you that confirmation is just as mythical as the acts these alleged saints performed.

I am a RCIA student who feels like St Therese would be the most perfect saint for me to choose. I also love St teresa of Calcutta and Mary Magdalene. My confirmation has been put off because of Covid 19. My heart aches for the body of Christ. Maybe you have words to help those who were waiting for the Easter Virgil to come into the church. I had a count down. I understand that it won’t be happening but my heart still yearns for forgiveness, confirmation and the Eucharist!

If everyone is a saint in Heaven, then what was considered by some to be a special distinction (being a saint) becomes the average, the ordinary, in which case there is nothing special about it; it is simply the norm, for lack of a better consideration. The designation then becomes meaningless as a distinction. We don't refer to everyone on earth as a human before specifically addressing them by name. Why? Because, as we all happen to be humans, there would be no point to it.
@CatholicFranciscan95
@CatholicFranciscan95 11 лет назад
no see you just focus way to much on hell. Jesus was always talking about salvation and love and stuff and here you are only paying attention to eternal suffering. and just because you disagree with this guy doesnt make you right and him wrong.

Jonah wasn't a canonized saint in the Catholic Church, St Hyacinth was. Why should I believe in his sainthood?

the church of Christ extends to people who are not in heaven as well though; so not all are purified and made holy yet, but are still members of the church. 'Saint' specifies those who are pure/holy.

This is a great series. I just bought the whole DVD set. Seeing all of these beautiful cathedrals makes one rather bummed out at the bland state of Catholicism on the parish level in the USA. It's as if the splendor of the faith has been robbed from the average Catholic.

@misthotos Actually, the Catholic Church traces its teachings and leadership all the way back to Jesus and the apostles. And even in the old testament (before Jesus) people looked up to (i.e. revered) others who had long gone (like the prophets, etc.). Not sure where you're getting your "facts" from.

I literally just got off the phone with my local parish priest who said I can come back into the church with all my skepticism about catholic dogma, and have no issue at all. My people have been Catholics for almost 900 years, I am not about to just give it up because fanatics think I am not a "true" believer. Save your speech for protestants, not fellow Catholics.

1) How would "saints" exist, considering that no human being possesses, or group of human beings possess, the capacity to determine anything of a spiritual nature? 2) Even if "saints" existed, would not the desire to become one, should anyone have that desire, negate the perspective of being humble, which is the perspective which you say that you believe is the correct perspective? It most certainly would.

1. I think you mean "determine" in the sense of deciding, and if so, you're absolutely right. God uses the Church in the same way He used the prophets of old, as instruments of the Divine Voice. They do not decide, but merely declare, what the Will of the Lord has determined: that saints are individuals whose lives mirror the life God wants for us so clearly that they are excellent examples to follow in pursuit of Him. 2. I think the desire to be a canonized, recognized, prayed-to saint can be a thing of pride very easily. But the broader definition of sainthood is to be one of those who have gone to Heaven, and in that sense, we are exhorted by Jesus Himself to desire sainthood. Many canonized saints were people who lived humbly and quietly, indeed often fled from recognition and praise during their lifetime. But people noticed, and saw the truths of God being expressed in their quiet lives, and wanted to present them to all Christians as examples to follow. It's possible to live a holy life humbly--in fact, it's required. But holiness is loud. People notice. It's what you do with that attention that makes humility.

There is nothing I`d like more than to be a Saint. But I`m not a Saint. I feel that there must be something wrong with me in my desire to be a Saint. Whom on earth would want to be a Saint ? Given the choice, I`d be a Saint. A choice, one or the other, between Jesus Christ and anything that would separate me from Him, I would chose to be with Him. But I am weak, and chose that path more often traveled. Don`t get me wrong : I have no idea as to whether Heaven exists or not. I want to be a Saint in this world, and want to be Christ-Like in this world irrespective of `the next one ` exists or not.

there are two kinds of saints...small s saints and large S Saints...many of us that sullied up our lives have to aspire to be small s saints...but praised be God, everyone in heaven is joyous and happy, even though some (the large S Saints) have more rewards and acclamations than others...in the end, it will be the way it was always supposed to be...take note all the jealous....fr barron has done a wonderful, beautiful, and didactic project worthy of praise and emulation!

Strive to be a saint to please The Lord and yourself. Never mind the word famous. There are many saints that aren't famous. God wants to make us saints right where we. Whether you are a mother or a gardener, a store clerk or a university professor, where ever we are in life God wants to make us saints right where we are. The Church needs us to make the sacrifice, to make the attempt as a life long journey. Saint John of The Cross, instructs us to make the approach slowly in small steps.

faith vs family tradition. seems to me that catholicism (or any faith) is about living one's life a certain way, not just applying a family label.

Saints go STRAIGHT to heaven. Those in purgatory have to be purged first and atone for their sins then when made clean they go to heaven but I don't think they would be considered a saint. The word purgatory comes from the Latin word purge.To be a saint also one is to have at least 3 miracles in ref to someone praying to them. Most saints also are given a lot of suffering in their lives and they of what I read offer their sufferings up for sins of others. Yes St. Therese was a true saint.

Should we all want to be saints? Absolutely! Only saints inherit eternal life and enter into heaven! We do this in life, not in death. We are told HOW to be saved in the book of Acts 16:30-31 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household.” In the Bible, saints are on earth. Living people in the church were addressed as saints, before the Vatican even existed. Saints are men or women who have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ, have confessed and repented of their sins, asked for forgiveness in Jesus' name and have been baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. So Christ's blood covers their sins and the Holy Spirit transforms their lives. They are presented before God the Father as pure and acceptable. Don't wait until you're dead to ask God for forgiveness and receive His Spirit; when you're dead, it's too late.

@misthotos Ok, let's take this calmly. 'Saint' simply means, 'one who is holy.' In the mid to late first century, nearly every believer was holy because of the tremendous outpouring of the Holy Spirit combined with persecution which weeded out the pretending Christians. Becoming a saint is a lifelong process of salvation, and all it really means is becoming holy like God, with God, and in God. The Catholic Church helps people become holy and fulfill their lifelong call to sainthood in Christ by
