Bishop Barron on The Woman at the Well

As a basis for my presentation to priests from around the globe, I used the wonderful story from the fourth chapter of John’s Gospel concerning Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well. From this encounter I derived four principles regarding the divine mercy, namely that God's mercy is relentless, divinizing, demanding, and mission oriented. Learn more at wordonfire.org!

1:15 So true. "God's quest for us." I was an atheist. Was. Starting in 2017 I started to have tragedies befall me: A best friend died in 49 days from a painful Utetine cancer. My brother nearly died in a car accident. My elderly father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was physically attacked in an aggravated assault. The police botched the case and I never got justice from the woman who attacked me. I started to suffer from the physical pain from the attack but also deep depression. Then, on May 1st 2019 I was on Day One of my vacation and I discovered my husband's affair. He was not even trying to hide his attention to his phone...and her. I was deeply hurt and shocked. If took all these events for me to see pure evil and the wickedness and brokenness of the world and the people in it. I am now a Christian. I'm not a perfect person but I am a believer. PLEASE pray for me, my husband and our son. I'm still tremendously hurt from my husband's infidelity. We are hurt.

Oh my goodness, all that is heartbreaking to just read, what more to live through 😢 I hope and pray you have lots and lots of good people come to your assistance and help you through a healing process so you may come out stronger. I hope the people who hurt will come to terms with the harm they have caused and become remorseful. The woman who attacked you sounds crazy but I am somehow so much more angry at your disrespectful foolish husband. No offense, but damn, I didn’t even wanna use the words that truly describe how I feel. I pray for you 🙏🏽Please God come to her assistance!

Thank you again, and may the Lord bless you most abundantly in your ministry! Lord God the Father Almighty, for all the priests of Your most Holy Catholic Church I offer my humble petition. Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, St. Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, and all of your Heavenly Hosts bless, protect, and guide all of your priests that they may be announcers of Your Divine Mercy. I fondly recall this Gospel while going thru RCIA. (1) The woman may have left husbands, or they may have died or they may have divorced her, a publicly humiliating act, or all of those things (2) Christ's priority was to seek her (and by extension, most everyone) when her need was greatest, to give her hope and joy when she had none left. And being a Samaritan and a shunned woman, Jesus' Mercy is all the more apparent in the fact He chose her first disclose His identity as the Messiah. St. Photina, pray to Jesus for the salvation of souls.

RCC: Pope Gregory IX, after he had agreed to the death penalty for heretics at the beginning of 1231, attached great importance to the fact that not the state, but a careful ecclesiastical investigation should determine who really was a persistent Heretic was that he should be handed over to the state for execution, and for this purpose, among others, he created the papal inquisition in November 1231 that same year: an investigative authority that at the same time performed judicial duties and had to watch over the purity of the faith. JESUS: But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you and pray for those who offend you. And whosoever shall smite thee upon one cheek, offer him the other also: and whosoever shall take away thy coat, let him not also the skirt be defiled. Whoever asks you, give to him; and whoever takes away yours, do not demand it again. Do the teachings and actions of the RCC match the teachings, actions and words of Jesus?

My motto comes from this story: "Come, see a man, which told me all things I ever did: is not this the Christ?"-Jn4:29. t Read the bible, and try not to feel like the woman at the well. When I finish reading it, I feel like it just told me everything that I already know about myself. And even more important, the Word already knew about me.

Albert Most *The blind have been made to see, the lame have been made to walk, and lepers have been cured by science, the church has been worse than useless on these matters even offering outright quackery as treatment* The Church serves to heal people’s soul / spirit - not their physical disabilities. *And to this day they totally refuse to correct the Bible even leaving the fraudulent medical treatments in the Bible as infallible- this is dangerous and downright evil* Like what? *They even promise everlasting life but can only do so without being jailed because their religious status means they can lie, cheat and steal, but can no longer rape children, or sell them* The Church promises there is life everlasting for everyone if they want to earn it, but only God can make the final decision on this. Also you’d be quite silly at best or downright stupid at worst to accuse every Priest of lying or cheating or worse. *but to live a Christ like life is totally forgotten as the priests dress in the finest cloths and live like kings in castle like churches - Jesus would surely be miffed* You need to get out more and open your eyes, especially in poorer parts of the world where Churches are anything like castles and a Priest owns nothing but the shirt on his back. *You can take a first step to improving your lot in life by using spell and grammar check* You’re right. Forget all the ills in the world, all my troubles will be cured if I run a spell-checker first. Gotcha. *and if it makes you feel better then pretend I said “God says….”* I feel a sense of pity towards you to be fair. *Mr. Barron has nothing more tangible for you than apologetics and empty promises that he wouldn’t even wager on* Bishop Barron promotes the words taught by Jesus himself. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. You decide to accept them or reject them. You decide if the promises are empty or not. Oh and he’ll wager plenty alright - sure he’s given up his life to the Church, hasn’t he?
@Peter-kl8jg
@Peter-kl8jg 8 лет назад
Albert Most *WRONG in almost every video he references parables of Christians in leu of turning to the teachings of the Bible, one of his favorite go to people is Francis of Assisi who was born in 1182 and I could go on and on. Since you are not familiar with these videos or the Bible may I suggest that you are making a fool of yourself?* Bishop Barron promotes Christ. Is that better? How do you know what I am or not familiar with? *So what size and shape is the soul/spirit and how can this healing you hope for be independently verified even by those who lack blind faith? Science doesn’t get stuck on such nonsense* Ah the religion of scientism - where the believer uses the word science ad infinitum as though it is his God and if it doesn’t pass through science, it doesn’t exist, right? Is that you? Even throws in an “independent verified” too. OK, science can’t prove my wife loves me, but I know she does. What say you? *Well if you had ever bothered to comprehend the Bible you wouldn’t be asking such very basic questions; I’ll answer this one and I’ll expect you to not turn away from the Bible or I will mock you for willful ignorance of the word of your God! Leviticus 14New International Version (NIV) is one example of provable dangerous Bible quackery- your turn to find the next one!* So you haven’t told me. But you like to mock. You seem quite angry. Does this anger go away? *The god of the bible is almost a perfect model for the standards that define a sociopath. God drowns all children on earth, except of Noah's family (Genesis **7:23**); God kills all firstborns in Egypt (Exodus **12:29**); God murders an innocent child (I Samuel 15:3); God has bears kill forty-two kids for teasing a bald man (II Kings **2:23**-24); God slaughters children for the mistakes of their father (Isaiah **14:21**-22); God orders the slaughter of women and little children (Ezekiel 9:6); etc, etc, etc. How satanic does your faith have to be before you realize you’ve been playing the fool by not comprehending the word of your God as written in your holly text? There is no reconciling such vile acts with so called “love”* Many things written in the Old Testament were for a particular audience in that time who were living in very violent times. Not everything is to be taken literally except what Jesus taught us. There are also many good things in the Old Testament too, just so you know. As for the sociopath stuff, we live in a world that kills babies before they are born. Over 50 million now. We live in a world where an A-bomb destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. But I bet you think that’s normal right? No anger for other things, just your anger for God that you probably don’t believe in? *You all should be ashamed of the teachings of your wicked faith. There are hundreds of examples of bad practice in the Bible from skin care to divining celibracy* Praise God. *If an all knowing all seeing God does nothing to protect children from being raped by the church you’d be silly to support that so called god as anything but indifferent, lack of action is proof of deceit even if it’s only innocent children that are harmed- sorry about that* The Church does not commit these vile acts - but some people in the Church did. There is much evil in the world and unfortunately that evil exists within the Church too. *NGO’s do the same work that religious groups do but without the lies and attempts at brainwashing, the chuch has done nothing to advance medical knowledge even though it benefits others by applying modern science that it had previously vilified.* The Catholic Church is the biggest private healthcare provider in the world - looking after at least 25% of hospitals especially in poorer countries. The Catholic Church was a pioneer in early science. *A real modern education includes proper spelling and grammar, but only because it opens doors to more learning opportunities, you seem to see everything as black or white and seem to know next to nothing about the Bible which according to your supposed faith spells damnation.* The grammar police is back. I should point a few of your own words out on this page: >>> chuch >>> ressureced >>> celibracy Give it up pal, you are making a complete idiot of yourself. I guess that’s what happens when anger overtakes your emotions. *Mr. Barron has not given up his life for the church, in fact the church has given him a profession that requires no blood or even sweat be shed* What are you talking about? Every Priest has to make sacrifices and the job isn’t a ‘profession’, it’s a ‘vocation’. *and even Jesus ‘died’ knowing he’d be ressureced into eternal life which really isn’t a sacrifice except for the fact that only a few claim to have seen him post resurrection, and even that was almost 2,000 years ago.* Did Jesus know? I don’t know. Maybe he did. Maybe he didn’t. Doesn’t matter if 1000, 100, 10 or just 1 saw Jesus after the resurrection. If he rose from the dead, it’s game on. *I’m sorry your messiah isn’t who you assumed he was* He is. *you really should read the Bible yourself because Christian apologists are only sending you deeper into madness as they insist your blinders need proper adjustment until you are blind to nature itself.* No offence, the only one with madness here is you. You sound like someone waiting to smash the computer screen in a fit of rage and you’re arguing about spell-checkers whilst making errors all over the place. *I feel pity for myself for having to pretend we are both capable of being sentient beings when you are extremely ignorant to the one book you claim to hold dear, as well as to the content of these videos that you seem to have wanted to watch but didn’t?* What are you ranting about my friend? What videos didn’t I want to watch? What am I ignorant about in the Bible? I hope God can give you some peace in your life. You need it.

I fully agree with your interpretation of the scripture here. I believe that the lady in question was a sex, love, and relationship addict. Her story of 5 1/2 husbands would be an absolutely normal thing to hear at a 12 step meeting of Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. And yet Jesus chooses her as the first civilian recipient of knowledge of his identity as the Messiah, the Prince. And appoints her as the first evangelist. It is an inspiring story of hope for all addicts.

I think we are all the woman at the well. The whole world keeps going back to that well over and over in the vain hope that some day the "water" will fill us up and satisfy us. But it never will, in fact this water will actually destroy us eventually. At some point we're all faced with a decision: keep going back to the well that can never satisfy us or go to the only source of true fulfillment:God.

Yes. Yes. Yes. The Divine Mercy at all times diligently sends God's Ardent Desire - (Fire) to heal each of us to bring us into intimate relationship with God. Yes. Yes. Yes. God asks for this with every fiber of God's Almighty Being; and asks us to imitate this with every fiber of each of our inmost and outer being. Yes. Yes. Yes. Begin by engaging someone, relating to the person, just as Jesus Christ engaged the woman. Yes, by all means! But you are quite right, He doesn't stop there. And there are certain ways of doing this; where we have been exhorted to be in every hedgerow, highway, and neighborhood --- to offer mercy with every part of the Church by John Paul ii. So many are not being reached because so many don't realize that offering help in a much more vast way - giving and receive of earthly water at first; gives in roads to sharing the water of life welling up into Eternal life. And there is abundant fruit that bears this out. When will the inspired by The Holy Spirit call to make this an integral, concerted, vast sign to the world in every pastoral, discipline, institutional, and every work of the Church start to end the fragmentation and reticence? The Light Shines in the darkness. God help us. God's Peace and warm regards.

Dear Bishop, what can I say? It is funny and quirky to listen to this commentary. It is really different and refreshing to hear this part of the Gospel in this manner. Thank you and God bless.

Dear Bishop Barron, that was a very smooth move! "Say a prayer for those priests": I just said a hail Mary, for all that it's worth (which I always say is the biggest surprise we'll receive when we get to heaven). A hail Mary for seven hundred priests three years later! And, again, I have this deep seated feeling that I will not be ever able to fathom what this little humble prayer might have achieved. You should do it more often! PS: any chance that you kept a recording of that talk in Rome? It's very neat!

This is a very good teaching on the woman at the well. As usual, Bishop Barron, you are a gifted teacher, thank you. Question: Bishop Barron, do you have thoughts to share on women wearing veils at Mass in today's time? It appears that some women wear the veil to Mass , however, most percentage of women do not?

Thank you, Bishop Robert! I'd like to know if there's a video also of the teaching you gave to the English speaking priests in Rome. I'd love to listen to the extended version of this reflection of yours on Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well! Anyway...your meditations are always so inspiring! God bless you...and be sure I will pray for tuo and all the priests!

Thank you for shedding light on this passage of the Gospel. I have but one favor Bishop Barron, can you tie this to the old Testament. Bishop Barron there are some on the internet who put more faith in the Old Testament than the Gospel of Jesus the Christ . I am Catholic and I know the new Testament expands the old. I am limmited in my capacity to try to make this kind of an argument to others who strictly don't share my beliefs. Anyhow, Thanx

Interesting. I've never thought of the well that way. But when you said the bible is the story of God's quest for us my mind flashed on a scene from the Russell Crowe movie Noah. It was beginning to rain, the king knows what's about to happen and he speaks these words to God: "I am a man, created in your image. Why will you not converse with me?"

This is very good. People who have got'en a divorce and then re-married, outside the church, can receive Gods mercy. but first - they need to put away their sinful life {before they go to Holy Communion} in order to receive Christs Grace. Its not a zero sum gain, and its a Mercy for the church to stop people who are in mortal sin from receiving Communion before they hurt themselves further.

Dear Father Barron, please consider the pattern of life lived by the Woman at the well St John writes about. He repeats it in the book of Revelation. Also note that Samaria had also five Pagan vassal kings in their past at the time. The one they had at that time was not their true king either. Her true king was 'coming' Messiah. She was expressly waiting for Him. I'm amazed at how candid Jesus was with her. He just told her " I am He. The one speaking to you" The revelation to ST John included that pattern. Rev. 17 9 “This calls for a mind that has wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; also, they are seven kings, 10 of whom five have fallen, one is living, and the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain only a little while. 11 As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction. For her who Jesus called 'Woman' Jesus is the seventh and He could only stay a short while (two days to be exact) Because He was going to the cross. He will return as the eighth and one of the seven. The Beast in revelation does the same but He goes to his destruction as the eighth king. I think Jesus called her Woman because she was an archetype of the nation Samaria having lived and experienced the same history. There is something more I think about that because it is a pattern revealed to St John from the Risen Christ. I hope you read this because i would like your thoughts on this. Peace of Christ

I remember my mother telling me this story as a child. Though it never made sense to me at the time, the story never left me. Now I'm 27 years old and this story is only just beginning to unveil its true meaning to me. I don't know why, this is just one of my favorite stories from the gospels
