Bisphenol A, also simply called BPA, is a chemical compound often used to make plastic bottles and line the inside of food cans. It is detectable in more than 90 percent of Americans, and even in low doses it's linked to cancer, reproductive problems, behavioral problems, hormone disruption, and more. And there's a good chance that you have some in your fridge or your kitchen cabinet right now. Yay!

@JohnSmith-mc2zz

If you're going to get plastic at least let it be nylon, something that can actually withstand heat. One problem is like Georg said, nobody will be bothered to go back to cleaning and refilling their milk jug. Something important to note is that BPA and the shit that leaches from it do not act as estrogen, they bond to estrogen receptors but do not act as estrogen, it may not sound very different but it's actually pretty important. Sufficient quantities of such "fake" estrogens will prevent actual estrogen from working in your body while also inhibiting both the function and production of testosterone, and any human body with low amounts of both Estrogen AND Testosterone, be it male or female, will suffer from a variety of extremely bad ills such as Osteoporosis. To put it very simply: real estrogen makes you grow boobs, fake estrogen kills you.

The BPA free stuff just uses similar chemical plastecisers, as a chemist just looking at the new chemichals they use structure, you can tell its gonna do the same exact stuff
@Pazuzu4All
@Pazuzu4All Год назад
Yep. A few semesters of organic chemistry will tell you that if the shape of the molecule is similar, it probably does something similar. I imagine making something safe will require too much effort for companies with little financial interest in the long-term health of their customers, so nothing will be done.
@sevenproxies4255
@sevenproxies4255 Год назад
From the chemistry side, I wonder, won't the plastic have to break off little pieces into the food and water in order to pollute the consumers body? I'm a layman in chemistry, but it seems to me that something in food or water would need to react with the BPA and cause it to be dissolved, right? Of course a lot of food stuffs will probably be able to do that due to the presence of various reagents. But maybe some plastic packaged food stuffs are safer to consume than others? 🤔 After all, one of the main problems of plastic trash is that it takes a long time for it to break down in the enviroment. But that also seems tl suggest that there aren't a terrible lot of naturally occuring reagents to plastics out there, or am I missing something?
@repletereplete8002
@repletereplete8002 Год назад
@@sevenproxies4255 I do know that many foods (such as tinned tomatoes) are really bad for BPA contamination due to acids in the food breaking down the coating. I'd speculate only dry foods such as packets of rice would be less likely to be contaminated.
@sevenproxies4255
@sevenproxies4255 Год назад
@@repletereplete8002 Yes, anything with tomato in it is a real hassle to store for extended times. I do a little prepping in my spare time and I've noticed how in old military rations, anything with tomato juices in it risk corroding metal cans, and it would probably react with BPA too. But as you said, as far as dry goods are concerned, eating rice or pasta from a BPA lined container should be fine. However there is an issue to be considered with plastic packaging. In factories where they do the packaging, flash and plastic shavings may end up inside of the food. I remember seeing a video where a guy with a microscope took a look at individually packaged slices of cheddar cheese. And let's just say that the slices of cheese contained a bit too much microplastics for comfort.
@repletereplete8002
@repletereplete8002 Год назад
@@sevenproxies4255 I can totally see that happening. I've wondered having been in several major food manufacturing plants what ends up in the packaged food. Chiefly from the production machinery as well as the structure such as lubricants, cleaning agents, metal and building dust, particles of the conveyors not to mention the workers etc. Those places were not possible to keep totally sanitary on a practical basis without having to shut down food production on a daily basis which would probably just cause huge build ups of cleaning products and thus more contaminants. It really is a case of you need to produce nearly everything yourself in some non-existent Shangri-La environment or not think too much about it and take your chances.

Interesting to note that BPA free plastics are supoosedly no safer than plastics containing BPA. So just avoid plastic entirely? Seems to be the safest course of action seeings as BPA free is no guarantee of a safe product. My mother had a scan recently and a 2 cm long growth was discovered on her thyroid. We don't know if it is cancer yet, Doctors are still looking into it. Looks like you hit it home hard today Georg.
@PawsOnTheBalcony

Think positive, it could just be a harmless nodule. My thyroid was littered with them, leading to hyperthyroidism. They removed the whole thing eventually, but none of it was cancerous. Best of luck to your mum.

one of the more ironic aspects of plastics superseding alternate practices was the substitution of plastic grocery bags for paper bags ( you can usually still request paper, but you have to go out of your way to get them ): the environmental nutbags were a primary driving force for this, as using plastic bags was supposed to mean that fewer trees would be cut down.

I'm no chemist but is it not possible to someway make the plastics more stable so they don't leak chemicals after manufacture?
@ceesno9955
@ceesno9955 3 месяца назад
I think the point is to leak. 😮 Sure everything could be made better, then someone thinks it should be cheapen. So items start to suck and people cut corners and people die. They call death an acceptable way to conduct business. 😮

No need to stress about it. Simply make changes to your everyday habits if it is concerning. Allowing oneself to become worked up over the inevitable is probably just as deleterious to one's health ultimately. Take a calm and sobre approach. Then be prepared to make different choices is all.

A year or so after the birth of my first son I was so serendipitously informed of the dangers of BPA. It was in his bottles, in his pacifier, in everything. The regulatory agencies and the manufacturers knew for years. Eat real food. Use O.G. simple alloys and metals, glass, etc. with no linings. Simple as. That extra $1 you spend will save you and your childrens endocrine system. And maybe your son won't become one of the 41% higher incidence gang, if you know you know.
