Bitcoin Q&A: Full Node and Home Network Security

Does running a Bitcoin and Lightning node at home attract hackers? Why is security through obscurity not the best strategy? What is some general advice on securing your personal computer and home network? Are there full node starter kits? Could bitcoin nodes be cut off if ISPs blocked port 8333? How do nodes connect to each other? How could you route around censorship? Will Bitcoin evolve into a more stealthy and anonymous protocol?
Chapters
0:00 Does running a Bitcoin full node and / or a Lightning node at home attract hackers to my IP address and home network? Also, could it reveal my ownership of bitcoin and attract physical attacks?
Are pre-configured full node starter kits safe to use for non-technical people, or is this against the point of running a full node and thus non-technical people should abandon the idea?
4:52 Bitcoin full nodes listen, find, and connect to other nodes via port 8333. What does this mean from a security perspective?
7:40 Could ISPs block traffic along those ports? How would Bitcoin nodes find each other if we use different ports? Or have all these lessons been learned from the peer-to-peer torrenting community and we can just follow in their footsteps?

I've been running a full node for nearly a year now. I had some questions - all answered perfectly here. Thanks Andreas.

Instead of buying a pre made node, just use an old laptop or buy a used one for cheap(they are out there), install a super easy distro like Linux Mint from USB, install bitcoin core and download the entire chain. Recommend regular disk drive instead of ssd, as you need the cheap disk space for holding the chain, and I don't think ssd would really benefit anything for this purpose.

Wow! 4 years ago? I must have been doing the wrong search parameters! Found this video very helpful, informative & actionable! One mention on BTC security I would add is a “dedicated” system for cryptocurrency transactions. Never have it on the internet except when taking care of business. Then, off! Period. This doesn’t apply to a node (well, unless you want it to). Hopefully, I’m not being paranoid. But, you know what they say about paranoia.. You only have to be right once! I’m just sayin.. Thanks for your contribution. I‘be liked & subscribed!

My full node is running on my home connection but is hidden behind a VPN provider

Amazing information. Thanks for sharing. Does full nodes receive a transaction fee or something like that? Or only miners? Would love to hear your ideas on different VPN providers.

Nodes do not receive fees. Your own node allows you to independently verify the blockchain. You can see if you've been paid without asking a third party. You can also submit transactions that no third party knows are from you. How that is useful might be difficult to grasp. But just consider that every time you buy something with a card or paypal, that company knows who you are, what you bought, where and when, and stores and shares that information with other companies. If you have your own node, there is no company, no one else. You are in control of your money.

Here is a question that I would love to hear your thoughts on, and hopefully there are more people interested to poke your brain on this one! So if you never read this, hopefully some one wants to post this question to your Q&A on patreon! Question: " If Bitcoin becomes widely adopted in the future, could a debate be started over code changes to introduce inflation? For example: They could convince a lot of people that we need inflation because a lot of coins are hoarded by a small group of people. Other arguments could be made ofcourse, and I fear a lot of people could easily be convinced by this. Do you think it is likely that this will happen eventually, and what do you think the outcome would be? " Sorry if the question is long, but this is something I think about a lot. Perhaps right now we have a fixed supply, but what if the majority of the world gets convinced that we need to change that in the future...

Bitcoin can be forked, thus evading the failures of democracy. People want to be on the winning team - not the team that gives them a say. People are busy. They have lives - things they're interested in. Remove the notion they ought to have a say in the meta-mechanics of their world, and they have more time and energy to adapt and thrive under the circumstances, rather than constantly exerting effort against it.
