How secure are mobile wallets compared to desktops or hardware wallets? How easy is it for each type of device to be compromised? Does a factory reset or re-installed operating system help? How hard is it to properly set up a factory-reset or airgapped laptops? Can malware be transmitted via USB? What is the Glacier Protocol?
Chapters
0:00 How safe are mobile wallets, since they are constantly connected to the internet nowadays? Are mobile phones considered a safe option if one does not own a cold storage wallet?
2:47 What are the proper steps to take when installing and creating a mobile wallet?
4:33 In case I have installed a wallet app on my Mac, which has been infected without me noticing, will a hacker be able to retrieve my private key from the wallet, which was previously generated by the 'getnewaddress' command?
6:04 If I copy the MyEtherWallet client on to a USB stick and put it on my offline laptop, will it be compromising my security? The USB drive could contain some sort of malware.
7:45 How would I get signed transactions from my offline, air-gapped laptop to an online client for propagation? Would I have to type it in manually?
8:31 Hardware wallets versus the Glacier Protocol

Great content as always andreas... hardware wallets need to be integrated into our phones using the micro sd or extra device such as a these watch phone add on for mass market and ease of use 2 layer security I think

Well explained video as always, Andreas. It’s always a pleasure to learn crypto from your videos. 👏👏 Questions: 1. What would happen to the stored keys if the companies behind Ledger Nano S go bust? 2. What’s your feedback on blockchain based mobile phones like the ones built by Serin Labs, as mobile wallets? 3. What’s your take on Ethos and Arcana mobile wallets?

I assume the added benefit of Cooperhead OS on a phone or having a Librem 5 phone for additional levels of security is overkill?

So... what type of security setups do profesional custodial services use? a lot of trezor/ledger devices? paper wallets with seeds in many pieces and distributed in many different locations?
@Nautilus1972
@Nautilus1972 5 лет назад
Who would use a custodial service? You've already lost security by trusting another human with your property.

What is your thought on cold storage like Ledger nano s vs cloud storage like Toast? Isn't your crypto on the blockchain no matter where you keep your coins? Meaning, isn't a nano s just an encrypted store of passwords to get to your crypto?
@b.griffin317
@b.griffin317 5 лет назад
that is correct. cloud storage of private keys is just custodial storage and thus "not your keys, not your crypto."
@henryespinosa6580

What would you suggest on where to get trustworthy assistance in trying to to put crypto on a trezor cold storage wallet? I’ve attempted this a few times with no success?
@b.griffin317
@b.griffin317 5 лет назад
you put it on with a compatable software wallet (mycellium, electrum, samourai, coinomi, exodus). you use the software wallet to access hardware wallet's addresses and send all your crypto to those addresses. not that hard.

I have a question of advice that I’m sure you have thought about. Ok now my wallets are set up. I have all my assets safe and secure. I get into a car accident. I am in a coma for months. I have a lot of assets in crypto. How should I prepare for this situation. I don’t want it to be lost forever. Maybe just my wife knowing where the keys are just aren’t enough. Maybe she is in a coma too. What’s your thoughts on staying prepared to pass on your assets.

I have DeepOnion coins and I have given my secret keys in a physical paper to my mother just in case and it's safe in a secured box.
@b.griffin317
@b.griffin317 5 лет назад
you need to give a trusted third party access to your seeds and they need a basic understand of what to do with them.
@zoidsoft
@zoidsoft 6 лет назад
Just wondering if you think Trezor is still secure. I have my doubts since last August when version 1.5.2 fixed a chip vulnerability that could expose the seed if one has physical access. Now I hear BitFi wallet (John McAfee) generates everything from a strong passphrase and never stores the seed. Because nothing exists on the device and can be completely recreated from the passphrase, there is nothing to hack.
@b.griffin317
@b.griffin317 5 лет назад
how does it generate keys without a seed? in that case isn't the passphrase just a seed? as for trezor: realistically you need multiple hardware wallets for best security of large amounts of crypto so if one is compromised you still have what is on the others. this is the way things will likely go. nothing is 100% so redundancy is the way to security.
