You can actually use the send feature inside the web extension in any of the supported browsers. No need to login to the website for this.

After I found a bit of free time, I put an instance of self hosted bitwarden (Vaultwarden) using Docker and Nginx Proxy Manager. Quite straight-forward to setup and using a raspberry pi4.

I use Box.net for sending files and they can be password protected as well as do all the functions of Bitwarden (including the IPs of those who access the file(s)). However, even with that said, I think that this is a great way of sending passwords to individuals so that they can open the files that I send to them; I've been thinking of ways to deliver passwords to clients and I think that this provides a great method for doing so.

Is this essentially the same as "Firefox Send"? I never used that do however find myself using evil Google Drive's share a link feature now and then. I think Amazon Drive has a send/share feature as well.

Nearly all email spam filters will delete incoming ZIP files. This started about ten years ago when the black-hats started bundling virus payloads in ZIP files. And as the other poster pointed out, there's no control over where the ZIP file goes and how long it persists.

Great future! So you said you pay for bitwarden but also host it yourself? How does that work?

Premium features typically require a paid subscription but allow for either cloud hosting on Bitwarden's site or your own site. Subscriptions help maintain the project for those people like and think are good projects they want to support, and helps keep things open source and free for most other things, keeps it cheap, and still maintains security. Personality I don't mind to pay for the support and maintenance and especially for the cheap overall cost.

djvincon - one can host the Bitwarden server on their own equipment rather than keep it on Bitwarden's cloud, but such a self-hosting user still has to pay a license fee for that server software. It is not a big fee. The way Bitwarden works however, even if their cloud server was hacked, the bad guys would not get anybody's passwords because Bitwarden doesn't have them.

Excellent video, I don't understand the point of this though, If i want to share something privately but then I'm emailing them a link "with text" along a password, it seams to be the same as sending an email with extra steps.

The idea is in a year or whenever when there is a security breach and emails get out (like the recent exchange vulnerability) the link is no good and the hacker can't get the password, whereas if it were just in the email they would now have the password

Late to the party with this, but the password to open the link would normally be sent out of band. ie text, phone call, other messaging app or something like that.

David G - for Bitwarden premium users ($10 per year) you get full end-to-end AES 256 encrypted file transfer (up to 100b) when using the new SEND. Free Bitwarden users are limited to sending text messages only. The files you send are encrypted on your device, then uploaded to Bitwarden's cloud. You get a link to that file to send to your intended receiver for the file. Very convenient for onsey-twosey file sharing when compared to using Dropbox and having to create a shared folder, upload the file, create a link, send the link, then come back later to delete the file after it's been received.

Your emailing the person a link to encrypted text...but the person on the other side needs too know password...I guess they still need two know something on the other end.

Out-of-band is great here. You can send the decryption key via another source.

@@kristianfaller290 kind of agreed...but if you need to send passwords via different source via phone call, signal etc..I'm not seeing a real distinct advantage over using other means of encrypted communication whether it be signal, PGP etc. I guess it's a nice feature to add however I'm not seeing a huge value add here over other solutions currently only the market.

@@kevinhilton8683 I agree to your statement comparing other encrypted methods. The only benefit I then can see is the possibility to control the amount of access times possible.
