thanks for these videos, they're super helpful! do you know if there's a nice way to group multiple drum sounds into one track, e.g. if you wanted to feed both of your hihat sounds into the same effects? it seems regular grouping (cmd+g) doesn't work for the Drum Machine sub-tracks. one way i've found is to disable the drum machine output, create audio tracks with Audio Receivers using Drum Machine Chains as sources, then work with these audio tracks. but this can be quite a bit of work…

Hi foldplop, good question. I never found I needed to do such routing. The drum machine tracks (Drum Machine) is already prepared multi out (multi mixer tracks). If you for some reason want two HH to have same effects why not just use the same inserts (copy / paste) and be done? Adding a bunch of extra groups might make your project busy and ”unorganized”. Always evaluate if this is really the only option you got, and if it’s really good practise. There are several ways to achieve further grouping. One way is to drag down volume of both HH on the drummachine separate HH faders. Boost the sends of both these HH to a Send Bus (1). Right click the send knob and select ”Pre” for both HH. Voila they are now both sent to Send1 = your group. Another variation I can think of (even though I’ve never found a situation where I need to route individual drum machine tracks to another group than the drum group)... You can create two ”dummy tracks” add one audio reciever device to each track. Set input to each of the HH tracks. Group these two dummy tracks. Voila, a drum group for your HH. Good luck. Bitwig has so many ways to route. But as I mentioned always consider your production options and if it’s really good practise / necessary. Fun fun! Thanks for writing foldplop. Hope these tips help you out.

@@MattiasHolmgren i've been mixing this way in Reason for 17 years and it works well for me, so i really want to recreate the technique :) copy/paste doesn't quite work because with nonlinear effects like distortion, feeding multiple signals through copies of the same fx doesn't always give the same result as summing the signals first. plus it becomes tedious to maintain if i want to tweak the effects... however the send effect method is perfect, i didn't realize there was a pre-fader option. thank you for the detailed reply, i appreciate it!

@@pulusound you are so welcome. It's often hard to find / think of every possible solution. And know all the little details that exist (like setting up pre/post fader). It works the same in some other DAWs though (read: Logic) so that's why I probably found it in the first place. ;) Glad to help out!

@@MattiasHolmgren I know I'm quite late to this party, but I'm a fairly new Bitwig convert working my way through your video series. Thanks for doing these, it is incredibly educational and well presented! But I have to respectfully disagree on this. First, an unrelated drum machine question: When I import a "home-made multi-sample" via Slice to Drum Machine option, is there a way to have all of the samplers set to "One Shot" mode? I recently experimented with pulling a large sample set off of an old synth, changing 85 samplers one by one is going to be horrible! Now, here's my opinion... and it's *ONLY* that, my opinion: "I never found I needed to do such routing." - Ironically I've struggled to recreate this same concept since my first day in Bitwig. It's a fantastic DAW and the flexibility of the drum sampler container is just staggering, but not having a way to group/bus outputs is a serious oversight! It's extremely common to do this, especially when working with "live" drums (groups for toms, cymbals, overheads, etc)... even if they're sampled. "Adding a bunch of extra groups might make your project busy and 'unorganized'. Always evaluate if this is really the only option you got, and if it’s really good practise." - This is a very true statement, but you should also evaluate whether adding 3+ identical copies of the same effect chain is the only option, and if it's really good practice. As @pulusound mentions, adding multiple copies leads to difficulties with any modulations or automations further down the road. Plus it's just sloppy resource management and will lead to projects that use far more CPU and RAM than they really need to. The drum sampler's internal send with pre-fader is a hack. It achieves the desired end results, but it's a sloppy and cumbersome way to do this. I really hope the Bitwig crew adress this in the future, it's pretty much my *ONLY* complaint about the drum sequencer so far. Thanks again for the video series and reading my humble opinion on the matter, keep up the great work!

Hi, the intention with many of my videos is just to highlight one way (or often several ways) of solving a problem. So often its a request from the community, and I might respond with a video showing how to do certain things. You will see in other videos (my own music breakdown clips / streams) that this might not be the way I personally go about it. So its just good intentions to answer questions. How and when you use these features is all up to you as a producer. I only showcase whats possible with the apps. Personally I work with a very light, straightforward and streamlined process. Thanks for watching and glad you are inspired by some of it.😉🥁☕️

Hi Mattias! thanks for sharing this video! I want to understand something well and that is: what is the difference between adding an effect inside the device and an effect outside the device? in this video you showed something about this but I don't understand well what is the difference. does the effect work the same or does it have some change? when it is necessary to add an effect either outside or inside the device? the same also works for the note plugins that bitwig studio comes with. i am just learning how to use bitwig studio, that's why i ask these questions
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 2 года назад
Adding an effect within the device will make it part of that "preset" if you ever want to save it to the browser. ;) THat's a big benefit. The effect works the same. Adding an effect "within" an instrument (or other effect) also makes that effect modulatable with the modulators from the parent device (synth). I made a video explaining this in further detail. Did you watch my other episodes? Thanks, glad u enjoy my Bitwig episode!

Dear Mattias! Thank you for the many instructional videos, they are very useful! I've been watching the channel for a while, but I just became a Bitwig owner. The Bitwig studio impresses me with its possibilities and working methods. However, it is very different from what I have worked with so far. I would like to ask you about admission, if you can help me find the easiest route; I make musical sketches on a Korg electribe 2 sampler. I currently have more than 100 4-bar long patterns lined up on 16 tracks. It has Hactribe with more than 230 unique waveforms that I actively use. They are full of manually recorded live movements and effects. I built the details as I would in the clip view in the DAW, so even the drum channels are not constant in every pattern. I have several questions about admission; I saw that in ableton, for example, there is a function where the audio and midi tracks can be recorded simultaneously on all 16 tracks. Can this also be solved here? It would be worthwhile to create a basic formula that would form the basis for recording the patterns. How would you do this? Would it be worth creating groups right away? (for example: drum, synth, sample...) Since there is a lot of modulation and the effects change from pattern to pattern, the tracks would require slightly different processing in the same project. Would it be better to record the tracks in RAW, without effects, and recreate them afterwards in Bitwig? Do you have any tips for organizing and teaching names? Thank you if you have the patience to read this all the way through... :D If you don't respond, it's not a problem at all. While I wrote it, my mind was working on it, and there may be other minds on something like this.. Thank! Greetings from Hungary; Thomas

Hey, thanks for writing. Yes, you can activate record on multiple tracks in Bitwig. Make sure to set the correct audio inputs / midi inputs on the tracks, and activate record arm (red button) on the tracks that you want to record in a one go! ;) Yes, you can create groups too. When you have setup the project as you like it...save it as a template, for easy recall when you need to record the same kind of setup again. Do you intend on recording the stuff from the Electribe into clips or arrangement timeline? Cheers, // Mattias

Dear Matthias! Thanks for the reply. I want to record in clip view. I've already recorded audio this way, as well as midi, but not the two together yet. I opened a HW instrument track, set the sampler on it, but for some reason completely raw sounds came from the sampler. The modulators, envelopes, and effects didn't come through.. Somehow bitwig took over.. Any idea what I should set differently? Thank you; Thomas

Sorry I don't have a video on that. But you can use midi devices to transform incoming midi if you need. Say you need incoming channel 1 to become channel 5...use the "Channel Map" device. Use this device before the Drum Machine in Bitwig to transform incoming midi channels to the ones you want. ;) You can also transform notes with other midi note devices in Bitwig...if you need it. Easiest is to look what cell is activated when you play the hihat on your e-kit. Then just drag the hihat cell to that cell in the drum machine in Bitwig. ;)

Your series is great. This video got me back into writing in Bitwig. I came across an issue, maybe you can help if you get the chance to read this. I made a drums track and a track with a long arpeggiated phrase using a VST. After a couple of drum bars, I want to change them. So I loop the part I need in order to save time. But I get no sound from the VST long recording. Only if I reset to the beginning of the recording. Same with drums. It can't play a sound from the middle, it has to start from the beginning. Since this VST part is pretty much my bass, I need it to match the drum beats. Is there an option I am missing or a way to be able to playback all tracks at any time I want? Also, is there a way to look at the track lines with the audio volume levels visually? Sort of like video editing where you can see the volume to match scenes without playing back. Hope it all makes sense. Thank you for your time.
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 4 года назад
Hi, the feature you are looking for is called Chase Notes. You can find the option, and activate it in Dashboard->Settings->Behaviour-> Resume Playback (Note Chase). This will make midi notes play even though the playhead starts in the middle of a long drone note. ;) So activate the Note Chase and you should be good. As you probably know, midi tracks only show...midi. If you render your midi to audio you should be able to see the waveforms for all audio tracks. And thus you can match your audio peaks / impacts or whatever to certain parts in your song with ease. Did that solve your questions? Thanks!
@fromfilmtocode
@fromfilmtocode 4 года назад
@@MattiasHolmgren That's great. Yes I figured out that I had recorded a MIDI track. My thought was to convert it to an audio track when I am happy with the sound, use it as a sample. So then I can see the volume peaks. Will try the note chase too! Good to know. Thank you.

Thank you for another nice tutorial, Mattias! I'd call it "Fluent Bitwig 2" =) As on the example of using Drum machine you've shown many use cases of, yes, Bitwig ways of solving routing problems. Basically I'm also trying to do things similar way and love Drum machine so much, especially for drums, but also when I need some kind of multi-timbral content on the track. By the way, I've noticed several times when you use samples isolated, i.e. just throw them on the arrangement and place to proper positions, and sometimes it's obviously done with Drum machine. Do you have some exact point of selection to prefer one of these ways? I personally mainly use Drum machine, probably to be able to handle samples more deeply or change the certain sample completely. But this adds another way of abstraction, that you manipulate MIDI events and can't directly see the sample. And another my question is: do you have some special layout you follow dropping certain samples to the Drum machine slots? I believe, it's better to follow MPC layout or something, but I really don't remember any of them :) I usually start with kick on, say, C1 or C0, but then it's a little random. Do you follow some special layout? And yes, your water drops library is so decent and impressive! I've been always thinking of something like that, and water sounds are so suitable, calm and nice to hear. Will definitely grab it one day!) Thanks again for this nice video and topic! And have a nice and productive week with wonderful weekend! We have now the second part of May holidays here in Russia for a Victory Day, but yes, the weekend is anyway around the corner :)
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 5 лет назад
Hi Alexey good to hear from you. Yeah I'm sometimes using the drum machine when I've got a "distinct direction" and know it's gonna be a typical kind of beat. If I'm more laidback and just want to try things out I "throw samples" which is when I drag and drop to the arrangement view. I like both methods. Usually I try to conform to the midi standard with kick on C1, Rimshot on C#1, Snare on D1, Clap on D#1, Closed HH on F#1 etc. But sometimes when I've decided it's going to be a more experimental kit I don't care about the standard too much for anything except the kick and snare maybe. Anything else can be spread on whatever pad I just throw the sample at. ;) The kick is always on C1 (or sometimes C0). If I'm not doing that I'm either drunk or tired. =) Glad you enjoy the water droplet demo sounds from my Water Sounds Pack. Be sure to grab it when you have the chance. Great to hear you will have some free time in Russia. =) Hope you get some new musical melodies going Alexey. Thanks again for some really nice questions and feedback.

@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you very much for detailed and in-depth answers, Mattias! Yes, that's General MIDI (or what MIDI part it is? :)), completely forgot about that. And the exact layout is completely forgotten for me) But indeed it looks quite handy and portable, so I noticed and asked. I think, I should also find it and finally learn it to keep consistent) And another my use case in terms of Drum machine layout is to devote the whole instance to one type of sound. Like e.g. I'm choosing snare, but not yet determined, so I open my library and drop all the samples came to my heart's delight at the moment and then either mix or select them, which also allows to fine-tune the start position to keep the attack consistent and what not. I know, you use your trademark famous selector pattern for that, which also solves it perfectly and also usually gives some breathe of life :) "Drunk or tired" haha oh yes, that is, sometimes I feel something similar like: "who ever dare to write this part at all?" =) But usually that's just me completely forgotten the moment) Thank you very much for warm words, Mattias! This time I'm a little more outside and busy with housekeeping things, but will also try to find a couple of minutes for music as well) Have a wonderful weekend! How would you go about adding a multi-channel analyzer, like Voxengo SPAN Plus, so that the different tracks are sent to different inputs for SPAN? Whatever I do, all tracks just get sent to inputs 1/2 of SPAN, which defeats the purpose of a multi-channel analyzer.

Without even inserting a plug-in before hand.
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 2 года назад
Hi, you can only activate more channels after adding the instrument plugin. Maybe I can show this in an upcoming video it's a bit hard to describe where things are without showing images / video. lol. ;) The button is called "show plugin multi out chain selector. If you add an instrument device (like Kontakt sampler) and you look at the top left corner of the device (not the actual plugin window) but the bitwig device that gets added in the device panel (bottom of the screen). From left top corner you first have the on/off for the device, then the "show plugin parameter", THEN you have the "Show plug-in multi-out chain selector", the icon is a "double arrow" kinda thing. Click that and the device shows two buttons, one of them " add missing channels". That will add all available audio output channels to the plugin for routing outputs of the plugin. Now you can open (expand) the view for the track in the Bitwig mixer (click the "double arrows" icon at the top of the mixer). I explain how to do this in the Bitwig Masterclass etc. Did that solve your problem?

I'm trying it just setting up the midi out from Maschine and it's triggering the pads, but they're not recording! As an aside, when I try to add Maschine Studio as a controller I get an error - I'm assuming I had a custom script that's now broken.

@MattiasHolmgren 4 года назад
Hi, thanks. The only way I use Maschine as a controller is with the Maschine Jam (with the community script), it's hands down the best integration and experience with a Bitwig midi controller. I do not use the regular Maschine mk3 as a controller for Bitwig. I only use Maschine mk3 standalone, and occasionally via the Maschine software plugin or Komplete Kontrol plugins. But that's very rare. I rather use the Maschine mk3 as intended = the Maschine software in standalone mode...it's awesome. I guess you can setup the Maschine mk3 / studio etc as a regular midi cc controller, but I don't laborate with such since the Maschine Jam already is an awesome controller for Bitwig. Did you watch my new video on the Panorama T4, it's superb integration with Bitwig Studio DAW. Give it a spin: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L3VtRICjT0k.html THanks!

Hi thanks a lot. I work in iOS a lot too too and wanted to know if you can export the samples in the drum machine easily to make a kit of samples ? Cheers
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 4 года назад
Yes absolutely. By default samples (that you drag from sample browser) are not saved to your project folder. They are just referenced from your regular sample folders... It's too keep things tight and small. BUT, if you choose the save option "Collect and save", and activate all options. Your project will collect all external samples used by your project and save them in a Samples folder within your Bitwig project folder. So yes, it's easy to do. But is not on by default. This way you have all your drum machine samples accessible. Keep in mind that it's the raw files. Not your processed (DAW plugins etc.) audio result. If you want to export that you have to go through the bounce (export) for each sound. You often add tons of processing within your drum machines, so you probably want all those effects too if you want to use the same sounds in another sampler / DAw. so in this case I suggest using bounce / export for each sample. Other than that the regular "Collect and save" is neat if you want to share your project with a friend or just keep it safe on a backup drive. Hope the info helps!

Why are there notes on the drum machines sample buttons. Does the drum machine auto tune the samples to the corresponding note?
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 5 лет назад
There are notes on the drum machine because each pad correspond to a keyboard note value. If you have key tracking ON (activated) the sampler will play the sample according to the pitch you play on keyboard. But since a sample only reside on a single key (pad) in a drum machine, key-tracking should most of the time be turned off. That's at least how I work with it. If I need to re-pitch I use the pitch knob. Hope that answers your question Steve. ;)

is it possible to adjust attack of all selected slots at once..

Only if you add a modulator (macro control) and attach it to the attack of said slots. That way it's possible. SOrry for late reply. Just found this comment!

Hey. Please tell me, is it possible to make sure that when you press one sampler of a drum machine, another sampler of the same drum machine is played with it at the same time? Or is it possible to do this only with a multisampler?
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 4 года назад
Why not just add an instrument layer within that one drum slot in the Drum Machine? Then fill that layer with as many samples / samplers as you want to play for that particular note. You can have any devices within a Drum Machine slot! Problem solved.

Thanks for this helpful video. I have a question when I load a kick sample into the drum machine it sound weak and not punchy when I take the same sample and load into the sampler in studio one it's more punchy and not so weak. Is there trick or something I missed?
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 4 года назад
Just check the levels. BITWIG has a dashboard General setting to set all track levels to - 10db. It might be on / active for you. Just check levels at all stages from sampler, track to mixer. That's usually the solution. Having good headroom is crucial for good mixes when you start to stack instruments. Thats why we have this function. Hope it helps, because there is nothing wrong with BITWIG sound quality. Cheers!

@Matthias Holmgren Is there any function within Bitwig to split a drumtrack afterwards to have separate tracks for e.g. Kick/Snare/HH for arranging purposes?
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 5 лет назад
Hi Jan, if you want to split one stereo audio clip and get the separated kick / snare / hh to a separate track. It's not possible by default. BUT, Bitwig Studio does have a very capable transient finder (it's called "onsets" in Bitwig). 1. Just drag n drop any stereo audio sample into an empty track in your arrangement view. 2. Double Click the Audio CLIP (or press Shft-Tab) to enter audio editing. 3. Activate the ONSET tab for the Audio Event. 4. Right-Click on the Audio Event bar, it is grey color, just above the blue onset points of the audio event. The more colorful bar at the top is the actual AUDIO CLIP, but right click on the Audio EVENT, not the Clip. ;) 5. Select "Split at Onsets" from the menu that appears after you right click the Audio event. 6. Your Audio Event has now been cut into multiple Audio Events which you can rearrange / reverse etc. You can also drag these Audio Events out into the timeline of another audio track and create new Audio Clips containing this "cut" audio event, which is neat if you want to split them into new Audio Tracks for some reason. ;) Another variation is to right click the actual Audio Clip and select cut to sampler / multisampler. It's another way of arranging your audio with midi events instead. But I like to cut up audio loops at Audio Event level. I have a video explaining the Audio Clip vs Audio Events in Bitwig Studio if you want more information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dd_sIOy8EVQ.html Did this info solve your question Jan? Cheers!

@@MattiasHolmgren Many thanks for your quick and detailed feedback. This already helps, but this workaround is not still perfect in my opinion. Coming from Studio One, I really looking forward for a feature which is called "Explode Pitches to Tracks" in Studio One also in Bitwig. Cheers!

This video is all about the Drum Machine Device of Bitwig Studio. Welcome to Bitwig Basics E09! In this video we talk about the drum machine and the relation to the mixer, how multi out is handled in Bitwig Studio. I also talk about my preferred way of working with the Drum Machine in Bitwig Studio. We build a drum beat with samples from the Producer Essentials Kit Vol #1 for Bitwig Studio (and also the PEP Kit #1). Furthermore, we explore the groove shuffle in Bitwig and look at how you work with shuffle in Bitwig.
