Magical music. An alchemical unifying of elements that "shouldn't" work. The bubbling microbeats, the ethereal choral backing, the childlike voice, the lyric - both guileless and complex. She does the arrangements and is totally involved in the production. I think she's a genius, pure and simple. One thing I've never understood about the doubters: I can get not liking her music, it's not for everyone - but why do people call her "pretentious"? What is it that she's pretending to? She's making music, the music she wants to make. That's what she does. Whether you think it's beautiful or not, to call it pretentious says more about the person saying it than it does about this unique artist.

Excellent. Bjork usually comes up with something that you can't hear anywhere else and this is an example. Who else would mix the strong Icelandic accent with 60s style backing vocals, lovely trip-hop style electronic percussion, interesting melody and dense production that provides a bed for her distinctive voice. If female pop was a race, she would be on Kate Bush's heels but several yards ahead of the rest of the field.

You are right!!! Hidden Place is about "Intimacy" And it takes a minute for someone or someone special to dig to get to that hidden place. But when it does happen!!! Wow!!!

Yeah, the whole album is about intimate spaces (hence the micro-sounds), but on Cocoon she gets more... Specific / exposed.

Yessssss!!! I'm so glad you're starting to explore this album. It's a sonic world of its own and Bjork pulls you in with her impeccable individuality. The song Hidden Place has one of her most intricate, layered soundscapes. Just masterful.

Wonderful album. The concert at the Royal Opera House features most of the songs from vespertine and the whole concert film is gorgeous. A must see. Great reaction.

Hey J! I'm feeling the need, by this point, in regards to Bjork's career. Just in CASE! you hadn't come across this factoid as of yet. I first learned of, & became a fan of hers with her band "The Sugarcubes" (like '86'ish), GREAT !!! Alt. 80's band. I would expand here but will just say, certainly! worth a good delve into them, as part of her her history and artistry. ✌️

So glad for more Bjork, and especially this album. Another artist who I would not say is like Bjork (who is?!) but falls into the same category of my mind is Neko Case. Her album "Middle Cyclone" is incredible -- the whole album is worth a listen. Or, if you want a taste before diving in further, try "Hold On, Hold On" or "Vengeance Is Sleeping."

Sublime track, from a sublime album. Her creative peak in my view, on a par with her previous album Homogenic, a peak she hasn’t quite achieved since.

Hi JP. Dave here (who's In And Out And Roundabout). Really interesting insight there, Justin, especially as I'm quite a shy fella myself. Loving the lush, imaginative soundscapes she creates. It's her Post album that I know, and on that one the orchestrations were by Brazilian jazz composer Eumir Deodato, with programming by Marius de Vries (who also worked on Vespertine and with Massive Attack). P.S. My song ref In & Out & Roundabout is by Chris Rainbow, voice of the Alan Parsons Project.

I think you would also like Norwegian singer Aurora. Part of her appeal is the relationship between the music and her physical movements, so a video would be best. She is another unusual and quirky artist who has been called ethereal and fairy-like. A couple of examples - "Runaway" from the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert, and "It Happened Quiet (Live At The Current)"

You might want to give some Sugar Cubes a listen to, or go back further in time and do some K.U.K.L - both earlier incarnations of Bjork. From the earliest, I suggest "Anna," and from Sugar Cubes both "Birthday," and "Deus" for starters. Great seeing/hearing you react to Bjork at long last.

Broken Loves -the Blue Nile may sound slightly shallow compared to this but i know which one speaks on my behalf. This has many positive features though. All is good in love(??- is that the title?) was my fave non single track by her, but her singles were usually spot on top notch. This sound possibly influenced Sufjan Stevens’ synthetic adventures. Talkin of which, your channel, nah, your life needs Sufjan. Love Yourself, JP🌸♥️d i o l ch!

"soundscapes"... There's a time and a place, and early Monday afternoon i'm thinking isn't one of them. It was ok, and I've always liked here voice, but this was pretty samey, and overlong. Maybe if I was hearing it in the dead of night it'd have been more amenable.
