On January 18 1981, in front of 18 287 spectators at Madison Square Garden, among them announcers Pat Summerall and Tony Trabert, Fred Perry, Don Budge, Jack Kramer, Ilie Nastase, Arthur Ashe and favorite character actor Jack Warden -- The Ice Man Viking conquered New York for the second successive year in spectacular style. For the second year in a row Björn Borg had demolished McEnroe and Connors within days on their best surface -- and now adding indoor carpet legend Ivan Lendl to his belt of scalps. Ivan Lendl had stunned Borg in five sets on indoor carpet in Switzerland just three months earlier and would go on to 9 successive finals at the YEC New York Masters tourneys as well as reaching the finals at RG and crucifying McEnroe 4 times, almost always in straight sets, on all surfaces between January 12th 1981 and January 12 1982. McEnroe couldn't handle Lendl's ferocious cross-court FH and while Ivan was playing really well here Borg shocked Lendl with his unmatched speed, consistency, depth and precision (check out the 48-stroke battle!) interspersed with lethal serves, groundstrokes and net-forays. Watch how Borg doesn't give Lendl much room for his FH -- pinning Lendl in the BH corner like Rafa does at his best against Federer. Lendl displayed heathy respect for the greatest stroke of the 1970s -- Borg's FH since that was also a magificent point-ender. Soon The Ice Man started walking on ice in in the middle of the second set -- while blazing clutch-serves all over the court and reurning almost everyone of Lendl's nuclear-serves with jaw-dropping quickness. While Borg's return game was perhaps the greatest of the late 70s and early 80s together with Connors -- Björn was especially proficient handling flat, hard serves from right-handers -- only leftie-cannonball-servers a' la Tanner and Johnny Mac could seriously disturb Borg's returng prowess. In the interview afterwards Lendl was full of praise conceded that while he was playing "really well, serving very well -- Björn did almost no errors and played very, very, very well!". Both Borg and Jimmy Connors, contrary to McEnroe, found it easier defeating Lendl on his fearsome carpet surface. Borg loved playing power baseliners like Jimbo, flexing perhaps the most consistent pair of ground-strokes in history and actually thrashed Lendl all three times they faced each other indoor carpet in late 1982 -- 7-1 in sets, effectively breaking Lendl's famous indoor carpet streak that year. They finished their H2H at 9-3 to Borg between (1979 to 1983)...

What a match by Borg, my favorite athlete ever and the guy who made me take up the game seriously. Seeing from this low angle really shows that even with the old wood rackets and gut strings these two guys CRUSHED the ball (much harder than it appears from the high angled camera shots we usually get). If Borg played today with all of the latest gear and training, I feel sure he would have held his own against the big three. His court coverage is stunning! And he hits so well from both sides and he literally never fatigues even after these brutally long rallies with Ivan. He was a one-of-a- kind. I saw this live on CBS and was so worried the new phenom Lendl would beat my guy and as you can hear the announcers were sort of favoring Ivan but Borg won in straights, and I was thrilled that not even the young phenom was going to surpass him any time soon. It was really only McEnroe's serve and volley that gave Borg trouble back then and probably made Borg lose interest. I was so sad when he left the game at only 26. 26!! My second favorite player Djokovic was just getting started at 26, or so it seemed, and he's still dominating ten years later. How many slams might Borg have won if he had sustained his interest another five years or so, and if he had bothered to go down under more than the one time?

Couldn't agree with you more. Borg literally adapted his game around the technology of the day. His left hand on the backhand side comes to the top of his head during his backswing and drops with ferocious force to generate the pace and topspin otherwise not achievable with wooden racquets. A total original, I don't think many of the "greats" that came since would have mastered the game the same way he did through his reign in the 70s & 80s.

Borg won 6 French and 5 Wimbledons before he turned 26. He was a way, way, better athlete than he gets credit for. It's impossible to compare eras with the change in technology but had he played with Fed, Nadal, and Djoker he would have given them all they could handle. He was faster than all of them, had s complete game, and was clutch as hell. He also cracked the ball with a Donnay wood racket strung at 80. If you think Fed, Nadal and Djokovic would have overpowered him think again. You can easily argue Bjorn was better than all of them. Remember he 3 peated the French and Wimbledon and two weeks apart. That's insane.
@binkyxz3
@binkyxz3 5 лет назад
I agree except that Federer is deceptively fast, partly because of raw instinct. So I would call that a draw, Borg may be faster in flat out speed. I would also venture that Federer's superior racket skill is such that he could have succeeded with the old equipment over the other contemporaries mentioned.
@kennethstokes5102
@kennethstokes5102 4 года назад
Come on you just can't say Borg was faster than "all of them". You'll never see a slow player at the top of tennis and in this match, as good as he played, he probably could've beaten anybody, but the top three you mentioned are without a doubt the best players to ever play the game.

@ Kevin Porter. Federer, Djokovic and Nadal are definitely not the greatest 3 male tennis players of all-time for the numerous reasons that I have cited in numerous other comments on tennis videoclips on RU-vid. Modern tennis fans erroneously believe that those three players are the GOAT because they fail to examine the underlying reasons why those 3 players' statistical achievements are so grossly inflated compared to the statistical achievements of the greatest players of previous and earlier eras in the history of tennis! I won't bother to relist those reasons since I have already done so numerous times before. Most people suffer from the all too-human affliction of seeing what they expect to see and not what is actually there in from of their eyes when it comes to events and trends in society. Most people, most notably in the mainstream news media, as Vincent Bugliosi used to very astutely and accurately point out, do only a modicum of analytical thinking. As George Orwell famously stated or wrote, "Life is a constant struggle to see and comprehend that which is front of my very nose".

I just wonder what would have happened if Borg had not burned out. Modern tennis and it's huge purses owe a great debt to Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. Borg's groundstrokes are a thing of beauty. His backhand was not a 2-hander or a 1-hander...it was something in between. He started with 2 hands and ended with one. I agree with the vast majority of comments here. Not sure I ever saw Borg play better. Exceptional quickness, anticipation, placement and overall strategy. And it is devastating to think after that years' US Open he would retire. From 8:50 to 9:20 he takes the best pounding Lendl can possibly offer and wins both rallies on passing shots; first a backhand down the line, then on the next rally with a running forehand crosscourt. Tremendous stuff. Just a sight to behold.

Borg had so many things going for him: he had fantastic groundstrokes off both flanks, tremendous margin for error with that amount of Topspin, fantastic speed and athleticism, a great serve giving him some easy points and also very importantly great stamina. He rarely lost a 5 set match because he would just not get tired - that was the basis of his tremendous mental strength and self-belief - the longer the point the more it favoured Borg. Witness the French Open later in 1981 when he just wore out Lendl and by the end mentally broken Lendl. Would love to have seen Wilander and Borg play at their peaks as they had alot of the same qualities with Wilander not having quite the same speed although maybe a bit more variety.

Contrary to popular belief, This leading into 1982 was Lendls best form regarding level of play, win loss record and tournament victories for the year. He just had no slam to show for it. Lendl actually looks like he hits a bit more freely and with more explosive power here than mid to late eighties. Yet he is being crushed by Borg. It's astonishing to witness the two players. @andreasmissiroli totally disagree. The 1984 McEnroe was virtually unbeatable. Anyone who saw that match was amazed at the first two and a half sets at Roland Garros. That could very well have been the best tennis ever played on a red clay court, particularly when factoring in that the opponent was the great Ivan Lendl. Everyone who saw that match knows that John McEnroe very much threw that match away by being not in proper shape, losing focus and running out of gas. Obviously, I give Lendl a lot of credit for not giving up, but John McEnroe definitely lost that match more than Lendl won it. The first two and a half sets were an almost unbelievable, shocking and unseen before brand of tennis on the slow red clay. McEnroe wasn't just beating Lendl, a player who on most days was better than McEnroe on clay. He was absolutely demolishing Lendl. It was something to behold.

For anyone who thinks Borg would be overpowered by today’s big hitters, I would direct you to this match which took place on a fast indoor surface. Lendl is hitting it absolutely huge even by today’s standards and Borg - with a wooden racket! - was matching him stroke for stroke and ultimately prevailed not only in this match but again against Lendl later that year in the French Open finals. After watching this match, my only doubt about Borg being able to be a top-level player in today’s game vanished. Armed with today’s technology, Borg would have won his fair share of majors no doubt. Borg’s anticipation, speed, patience, and stamina are unmatched. I think Rafa still beats him more often than not on clay, but Borg would give him a hellacious time of it.

They both played amazing, shocked at the level of play and how hard they are thumping it from the baseline with these old shitty rackets with hardly any unforced errors, probably the oldest most ferocious game I've seen, very intense for its year.

@ Harry Callahan. You characterize wood rackets as "s_ _ _ _y"???? Wood racket tennis was and will always remain the best and most beautiful form of the game of tennis! Wood racket tennis required real talent to succeed compared to the deplorable cheapening of the game of tennis in the graphite rackets/lubricated strings era! Jimmy Connors was so right back in 1989 in his comments during the "roundtable" discussion of tennis racket technology with Bob Costas and Bud Collins on NBC Sports coverage of the final Sunday of the Wimbledon fortnight about how the graphite rackets artificially elevated the level of players from "C"-level pros to "B"-level, "B"-level pros to "A"-level pros and "A"-level pros into Wimbledon-level pros and that if the game went back to The wood technology then you would quickly find out which players really have the talent to make it onto the pro tennis tours and win the major tournaments!

It's interesting to to that people talk about how the game has changed, how it's quicker, etc. but watching this would lead one to doubt. Sure, Borg vs.Johhny Mac appeared slower, but I think it was mainly due to Mac's serve/volley, and precise placement, but these to are crushing the ball. It's not that far removed from today's game. Lendl hits like Tsonga, and look at Bjorn's "Carriage Whip", and those running forehand winners, switching defense to offense. He was the Nadal prototype.. Way, way better than the equipment available at the time..n( including the shoes.. Just watching him run like that in those basic sneakers makes my 42 y.o. body ache, lol)

Mrnobody789 Note that in the 90's, Borg played the champion's tour. His serve was faster, and his forehand was faster with good accuracy thanks to a bigger racket head size. He wasn't even playing with polyester yet at that point. Clearly, the only difference between now and then is the rackets. Those players are still some of the greatest ever, and would have been competitive in any era.

Mrnobody789: It's difficult to compare players of a different generation. The players today, are hitting the ball harder, but there's less variety of styles these days. And tactics were more important back then. But these two certainly hit their forehands pretty hard, especially Lendl. Borg was quick around the court even by today's standard, and Lendl was very fit.

This match reinforces the sadness I feel about Borg's early retirement. I think in '81 Borg was at the top of his game. Both in this match and in the 1981 us open semis against Connors, Borg is seen with a more aggressive, faster game, a forehand that beyond being the "king of topsin" seems to me even flatter and faster than in previous years. I think that despite the disappointments he suffered against Mcenroe in '81, he should have waited a little longer and most likely would have found the mental strength to defeat him again. I know it's strange to say that about Borg, but watching the matches against Mcenroe in '81 I feel that with him the only thing that happened was that he didn't know how to sustain the advantages he gained in the match, losing break points or important chances to win sets, regardless of the good match that Mcenroe played

I remember this match very well it's actually the only time I saw Borg so angry and willing to punish his opponent hitting the ball like he was using his fists. Wfy? Because a few weeks before in Basel, Switzerland Lendl beat him in 5 sets behaving like an a* and cheating as much as he could. The funny thing is Lendl was a huge Borg fan but that day he acted like an idiot and in NYC he got what he deserved. Nobody ever moved as well as Borg did on a court and he really was one of the greatest of all time and a legend in his time. Thanks for sharing this video!

In fact, none of today's players would stand a chance against Borg if they had to use the same tiny heavy racquets. Borg also retired at age 26. Stop and think about that fact.

Absolutely true. Nobody. And tennis should go back to wood. In baseball they still use wood. They are not using oversized lightweight graphite bats in baseball. There is a reason. It would make the sport too easy. That’s what is wrong with tennis today. The equipment makes the sport less technical and easier.

Absolutely Borg's athleticism is overlooked. I think it has to with his demeanor. He is so laid back it almost comes across as passive. Even his body is deceptive. He has those hunched over shoulders which also play into a closed look. Looks stiff when he walks around but so agile when in action. He is anything but passive and closed when moving laterally and preparing by quick foot work to the ball. Just not your typical athletic upper body type. I think is a great thinker also. Strategist. Always thinking about how the point is going and how to set it up a couple of shots ahead. Always on the move with anticipation. Great footwork technique. Lots to still learn from the man if one really watches.

I mean he's hitting the ball powerfully with Ivan Lendl who is basically playing with the newer technology rackets here in 1981. To hit the ball that hard with a wood racket, just imagine how he would have adapted to the newer rackets if he had continued❗ In my opinion, for Bjon Borg, to go away from the game for 10 years was just a mistake, and again I just wish he would have found a way to get back in the game ❗

You can get a feel for it here, namely Borg's outrageously fast and smooth movement. I was lucky enough to see him play and although only a kid I even then knew I was watching a truly unique player as his speed of movement and accuracy of same was beyond incredible. Here it is as if he says 'I know I am in great shape and can run down any ball you send but I will also use the game to work on my fitness, too'. He just never looks in danger of losing, even though Lendl is hitting shots few other players back than and maybe even now would be able to get to.

I actually admired the player Lendl became. What I wrote about Borg being the greatest player of all time is of course only my personal opinion. You make an interesting observation about Lendl not yet having his devastating backhand and I'm so/so on the issue, because this match isn't too far away from their French final where Lendl's backhand was well on display. I could easily say that the Lendl backhand would be nullified by Borg switching to a graphite racket himself. To each his own....

This is probably the best of Borg. It is heartbreaking to watch this in a way. Tennis lost so much when he retired early, a great athlete and a great human being. His modesty is remarkable, especially in contrast to Lendl who was known to be disrespectful to his opponents. For example, he once told Brad Gilbert that he could beat him if he was on his deathbed. He made similar comments to Michael Chang. Lendl was no gentleman but he was a great palyer.

I know that Lendl once in an ordinary exhibition match against Wilander totally destroyed him 6-0 6-0 although Wilander had lost his ordinary racket and gear in the flight, which Lendl knew, and Wilander had to quickly borrow his stuff together. Do you think that is sportsmanship? Anyway in Masters 81 Lendl lost on purpose to Vitas so he didn't have to face Borg in the semi. Connors had to instead. This by the way got Lendl disliked in the US for many years. Good thing that Borg totally destroyed him in this match.

Lendl lost deliberately to Connors (not to Gerulaitis) in the last round of the round-robin portion of the 1981 Masters tournament so that he could avoid playing against Borg in the semifinals and could instead play against, as I recall, Gene Mayer in the semifinals. hey, its just HARD to beat a guy on a regular basis, who positioned himself the way Borg did....he was like the immovable object, so to speak..which just means, it was damn hard to get him off balance. Ivan actually had more power than Borg..and he could smack a backhand harder than Borg could with two hands. But again, no matter how hard Ivan struck the ball, he just could not get Borg off balance, to keep him off balance. Lendls forehand is the most solid forehand in history of tennis.solid meaning controlled agression over 20 years.most difficult to excute.federers is the best attacking forehand in history over 20 years.i personsaly feel the lemdl bkhand is tecnicaly superior.rogers serve is better.volley both r good and it only mattered as much as both ended up gng that much only.reasonable times.positioning both r kings hvin been taught by the same master tony roche.both had incredinle foot speed.lendl looks less rushed and is the most organised champion in history which is a huge huge huge thing in matches.half the battle is won.and lendl has one more weapon when smbodys trying to blow him off with attacking play on a fast crt(imagine)the best passing shots in the history of tennis.on these slow surfaces imagine wat he wld hv done.and he us the fittest tennis player in the history of the game.how many wimbledons wld he hv had and how many more hatd crt titles wld he have had.temperamentaly frm a wreck he became the strongest in the history of the game.i dnt blame him for being a wreck.mcenroe cld make u that.he made borg quit.lendl cld hot 30 ball rallies constantly.it was taught to us.consistency won u points just like attacking.its like a,slot machine.it cms later in the match and suddenly when u c ur nt misding gives u points like a slot machine as the opponent who was technicaly avg has broken dwn.nw imagine after all these ticks in the boxes he stil is my 2nd best of all time Imagine how much more time lendl wld hv in tdays slow surfaces and the power of his forehand with tdays racquets.he changed to a ridiculously good serve and volleyer to win one wimbledon as playing frm the back and beating becker and edberg on fast grass to win was virtualy impossible(a feat only accomplished by andre)and he sacrificed another 2 or 3 french opens to prepare .he cld hv win 6 frenchs easily.and to nw see guys like nadal and noval winning frm the back must be heart breaking and then acclaimed as goat for the same titles is absolutely blasphemy.atleast i cnt allow that insult to my intelligence and to the game.thats why goat is not only bout slam numbers.its just one component and that heavily dependant on the level of play at the time meaning the quality of opposition.

@kchuk1965 How did Wimbledon slow down their surface? I'm also confused as to how heavier balls are faster?
@michaelbarlow6610
@michaelbarlow6610 3 года назад
@ pedroV2003. The AELT&CC slowed down the grass courts at Wimbledon starting with the 2001 tournament when they replaced the traditional composition of the grass courts there (which was 70% rye grass and 30% Red Creeping Fescue) with grass courts composed of 100% rye grass. Rye grass is a firmer, more impact -resistant (and hence) more durable surface (than a grass court composed of 70% rye grass and 30% Red Creeping Fescue) which results in a higher rebound and truer bounce of the tennis ball compared to the lightening fast, low rebounding, skidding and sometimes erratic bounce of the ball on grass courts composed of the traditional 70% rye grass and 30% Red Creeping Fescue. The AELT&CC changed the composition of the grass courts at Wimbledon for 3 reasons: (1) because of all the criticism about the shortness of the points (most notably during the three consecutive Edberg-Becker Wimbledon finals from 1988-1990 and the Stich-Becker Wimbledon final in 1991 (not to mention the shortness of the points during the tournament during the Sampras era at Wimbledon), (2) the AELT&CC officials didn't like the fact that the Center Court grass court at the end of the fortnight always looked chewed-up and very worn (including how it looked on TV) from all the tennis play during the 2 weeks of the tournament, and (3) the maintenance costs were reduced by switching to a more durable 100% rye grass surface. The larger in circumference Type3 tennis ball which has been adopted by the pro tennis tour for utilization in some tournaments compensates to some degree for the greater power of the modern graphite rackets utilized in tennis. All of the changes in the game including the slowing down of court surfaces, the invention and adoption of copolyester-lubricated strings, the adoption of the larger Type3 tennis ball for utilization in some tournaments has regrettably resulted in not only the cheapening of the game of tennis but also the disappearance of serve-and-volley and chip-and-charge-to the net behind an approach shot play in the game which has resulted in the game eroding into a mindless, sleep-inducing, baseline "war-of-attrition" slugfest with no beautiful diversity of playing styles.

***** Yes I agree. He(Wilander) had a decently hard fight with Vilas in 82 which Borg won against easily against after 77, especially in French open. In Geneva 81 Borg won 6-1 6-1 just giving Wilander one game to be kind in the last set. And Borg was far from his peak by then. But It would be the worlds longest match if they had faced each other when they both were playing their best :) . But Borg would win in 4 sets as his offensive strokes were better which would prevail in the end. And yes I am guessing.

+SuperHammaren Borg "far from his peak" in '81?
@SuperHammaren

palmettohorn My comment sounded strange yes. But I meant like this: Borg got injured after the Lendl match in the end of 80 early 81. He rarely played anything before french open 81 and still he was in the final vs Lendl losing no sets. But he never recovered totally during 81, or indeed ever. His coach was very concerned that Borg stooped controlling the matches especially vs Mcenroe. Borg himself said that he mastered every stroke well now but his mind was the problem, he started to loose the motivation. So his peak was 79/80 but went downhill on from there. The Wilander match was the last Atp-tournament he won in late 81. Still, in 82/83 he beat Lendl 3-0 in an small tournament, in Tokyo(?) on carpet. It was a non-Atp event but Lendl is known to never give anything away, just ask Wilander.. who he beat 6-0 6-0 in an exhibition were Wilander had lost all gear before the match and have to lend stuff together. Humiliation. That gave him the energy to bring Lendl down in 88.

Borg is incredible! Playing with a wooden racquet while lendl playing with an aluminum racquet, the start of racquet composition materials making incredible low percenrage shots very possible reducing unforced errors allowing players to smash the balls at will for current players. I don't think players like Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Alcaraz can play with players in the 1970s

Borg never gets credit for being a good volleyer. To the contrary, he was often tagged as "not a great volleyer." He had his own style and flair and may not have volleyed exactly the way a textbbook would tell you, but he was actually excellent at net and won way more points at net than he lost.

@Thomas Humphrey. As huge a Borg fan as I was during his brilliant career, I realize that his volley was at best adequate to good but never great. The lightening fast, low skidding, bounce of the tennis ball on the Wimbledon grass courts at the AELT&CC back then made Borg's volley look better than it actually was.

This is amazing tennis. Using garbage racquets they arent that far behind the top 3 today fed, Nadal and joka and thats 40 years ago. But this match in 81 is light years ahead of just 10 years before in 1971 ,let alone 1941 . The jump in standard in just 10 years is incredible and to be only a bit behind the top players 40 years later is incredible too

The way Borg keeps his feet and legs so far apart is very distinctive. Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of the few others who do it now.

Borg had extremely strong legs. He had the same strength as big heavyweight lifters guys in tests performed in 82.

Anybody who just counts slams doesn't really know much about how tennis was in the old days. Why did Borg only play the Australian Open just once? Also, todays top players plan their year around slams, not so in Borg's day. Borg won 6 French but he couldn't play in 77 as he was contracted to play Team Tennis. I say to some do your research, please. For me Borg was something else

You are absolutely spot on. Connors too didnt play the French during his prime (due to a dispute) and if you go further back, Laver openly said that he didnt even know how many slams he had won. They just didnt carry that kind of importance - he said he knew how many Wimbledons he had because of a friendly rivalry with another player, but that was it.

Borg (and the other players exept Gerulaitis, Vilas and Tanner) didn't play Australian open because this tournament finished the tennis season (it was only interesting to win grand slam). By now, it's beginning of season, there is suspense.

Not to be picky, but the correct term is ''majors'' not ''slams''.

@ D'Ascoyne. The fact is that the tennis world or tennis community has been misusing the terms ''slams'' and ''Grand Slams'' for years to refer to each individual major tennis tournament. The individual major tournaments in both golf and tennis are properly called '''majors'' NOT ''slams'' or ''Grand Slams''. Just because the majority of tennis fans and TV tennis broadcasters refer to those four individual tennis tournaments as ''slams'' does not make those broadcasters and fans right in the terminology they utilize.
