Despite best intentions, today’s fractured healthcare systems largely compound our collective fear of the end of life as a time of suffering and disconnection. San Francisco’s Zen Hospice Project Senior Director, Advocate and palliative care physician BJ Miller invites us to think about and discuss the end of life through the lens of a mindful, human-centered model of care, one that embraces death not as a medical event but rather as a universally shared life experience. Having had his own near-death encounter, Miller powerfully advocates the roles of our senses, community and presence in designing a better ending.

I'm a hospice nurse in AZ, but I just decided to get my CA license and go work for him.

Eddie Wu when I die, there is a high likelihood it will be painful and scary, sudden in starting but likely a drawn out process from start to finish, like perhaps taking a day or two to finally pass, due to the nature of my condition. But, I am trying to come to terms with that and be at peace with that, knowing that I can't change it, I have my affairs in order, I will miss my young daughter very much however we have been making memory boxes and scrapbooks so she can remember all the fun times. I hope to be totally at peace with the scary death I have ahead of me.

Great video. The only part that is simply inaccurate is the comment about if one is in a nursing home, and goes on hospice, they then have to pay their room and board of the nursing home.

Pu Kway in the US, if you have Medicaid paying for your nursing home, your Medicare will pay for hospice, you are correct. But most don’t have Medicaid for nursing home and are left with deciding to pay to stay in nursing home or go home with hospice. Unless you are very sick you can go to a hospice facility if available. Speaking as a social worker.

Pu Kway that is true unless the patient has Medicaid, then Medicaid picks up the bill. But Medicare only pays for hospice or partially for nursing home, but not both. I am not sure about private insurance.

@@susaludvaleoro3621 Nursing home insurance is purchased as a separate policy. It is not included with Health Insurance. The premiums are pretty steep and are not affordable to most. (I used to sell it)
