Thank you Shintaro and your co host. Please please if you could continue to go to these events and commentate the tourney for us…? You are good at it, easy to listen to and understand. And I appreciate you giving the bjj player kudos for the skills he has. Not just a tribal shit talk fest. And for all you nerds who think the bjj guy was trash.. He was playing against a national team member for Team Canada. That’s what that lil patch on his back means. Not just a lil piece of dojo merch you can iron on.

I love all grappling sports but it's pretty sad to see comments that judge an entire martial art based on the performance of one practitioner. Seems like he deserves a little respect for acknowledging his weakness in his stand up game and is working into Judo to strengthen it he's wearing a white belt after all I've met quite a few black belt and brown belts in judo who couldn't do a simple reguard from side control no one shamed them for trying to get better.

Nb. that, in addition to his dan ranks in Judo, Shintaro here is also a BJJ black belt under Brian Glick and has years of experience cross-training the two sports. He's not judging BJJ based on one practitioner so much as he's pattern-matching and generalizing based on what he's seen over the years in several gyms and dojos.

Judo for balance/opening IQ, standing throws, rolling throws, really low crouching throws, sweeps, static locking. BJJ for leg shoots/takedowns/tackles, mat IQ, lock juggling, and submissions while expecting to be kicked/punched. Choose your weapon, or dual-wield

Or... find an old school Judo dojo. I did Judo prior to the 2000s rule change it it was a far better sport -- maybe not for Olympic TV viewers, but as a martial art. Someone pre-2000s would have no qualms about leg shoots/takedowns, submissions, ground and pound, etc. Likewise, they would be much better at defending themselves against such things. I won maybe 75% of my matches on the ground, mostly but submission. Judo back then had far different tactics. Sadly such schools are beyond rare.

It's a good effort but I feel this exemplified the problem with BJJ and relying primarily on it. It doesn't work very well if your opponent won't play your game and go down on the ground with you. It's a very good system, but only for a very specific application. The rudimentary throws and guard pulls they learn might work against strikers who can't see it coming, but they're not taking down an experienced judoka with them unless he wants to go down.
@jonahwashburn1163
@jonahwashburn1163 7 месяцев назад
As a BJJ guy, I agree 100%. However, the same argument can be made if they played under BJJ rules, where the ref doesn’t stand up the competitors. Under that scenario, we could say the problem with judo is they learn only enough groundwork to make it 30 or so seconds and then be stood up. Both sports evolved within their own rule sets to test different skills. Judo rules lend to testing which combatant has better throws, BJJ rules lend to testing who is better on the ground. It’s hardly fair to take a practitioner of one, put him into the other’s rule set, and then judge the athlete for underperforming in the rule set. I think Kosen Judo is the best mix of rules, where throws can win the match, but groundwork is far more permitted. I hope to one day see a similar ruleset (it may already exist and I don’t know it yet) that becomes a standard in cross-sport grappling matches. Even still, congratulations to this judoka for the win, and props to the BJJ guy for stepping into unfamiliar territory. 👏
@BigUriel
@BigUriel 7 месяцев назад
@@jonahwashburn1163 Judo has suffered with some rule changes as well, although there's still a lot of dojos who teach "traditional" judo without as many restrictions as those focusing on the competitive side. I think in a real self defense scenario the focus on throws over submissions is not a problem because if you throw someone in a real figh (and not on a padded mat but on a hard surface) that's potentially a very serious injury - even on mats people who fail to breakfall properly can get winded or even concussed. If you can throw well you'll probably never need to go on the ground, which is a good idea because in a real fight you want to retain the ability to run away at any moment! The biggest problem I have with Judo and the way its practiced under competition rules today is the turtling. It works for competitions because as you said, you go turtle and just wait until the ref stands you back up, because the only joints you can legally attack are the elbow, shoulder or neck and you got those tucked in. In a real fight turtling is really fucking stupid! Your ankles are right there for the taking and of course the obvious - people can just get up and kick you! Turtling should not be allowed at all IMHO, it's essentially a sign that you just lost, and now you're just playing a game and not actually fighting.
@jonahwashburn1163
@jonahwashburn1163 7 месяцев назад
@@BigUriel I agree with everything you said about turtling, it’s a bad habit to get into for self defense. As for remaining standing for a street fight, I agree, it’s a fantastic idea to avoid the ground, however, I’ve seen too much video evidence of ground fighters protecting themselves just fine while going to the ground. I don’t believe going to the ground is the cardinal sin most people make it out to be. And by the same logic of saying someone who is good at throws may never need to ground fight, you could say someone who is reliable at ground fighting need never refine their throws (being able to end a fight on the ground rather than with a throw). That said, I think judo is probably better for self defense right now, but BJJ may overtake it in the next few years as use of force laws both for law enforcement and the public become stricter.
@BigUriel
@BigUriel 7 месяцев назад
@@jonahwashburn1163 I think there's one big caveat there: are we talking about self defense against a single attacker, or multiple attackers? Going on the ground definitely works, against one guy. If there's two guys it's a very, very bad idea. And often times the fight starts with one guy, but before you know it there's a second one, as people who go around being assholes and starting fights (or mugging) usually have their buddies nearby. That for me is the main reason why you absolutely do not want to the ground if you can possibly help it, if you throw someone and his buddy comes running to help you can see him and run away, if you're busy putting the guy in a submission you won't know it until you get kicked in the head.
@jonahwashburn1163
@jonahwashburn1163 7 месяцев назад
@@BigUriel Again, I agree completely, going to the ground against multiple attackers is a very bad idea, hence why I agree that judo is probably better currently for self defense. However, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of evidence that street fights are too often one on one, as such I think you could be fine learning BJJ. In the event of multiple attackers, running away or concealed carry are the only factors that could save you, there is no martial art that can reasonably give you an advantage. In theory staying standing is a great idea, but I see no reason a BJJ guy can’t see that there would be multiple attackers before engaging and decide running is better than fighting (something any martial artist should do when confronted with multiple attackers). I have seen nothing from any martial art that leads me to believe it offers a good chance against multiple attackers. In short, yes, going to the ground would be the worst idea for multiple attackers, but evidently, multiple attackers is the vast minority (depending on where you live), and any situation where BJJ/ground fighting can’t reasonably protect you, no martial art will make a big difference, you need a gun for those. And again, self defense laws are getting tighter and tighter, slamming your assailant to the ground, potentially killing them may get you prison time, even if intended for self defense. Reasonable and minimal force are becoming more and more required, and as such taking an assailant to the ground and controlling them there till law enforcement arrives is (in my opinion) going to become the most legally reliable way to protect yourself.

My tachi is garbage, but my ne waza is at least competent. I've been doing Judo since 1987 when they gave you more time on the ground. These days, if you can't start the pin, choke or arm bar within two seconds, I don't think it's worth the effort. The window of opportunity for success starts to close the moment you hit the mat. Even if you have a skill set on the ground, the ref has to understand that you are actually making progress, and that's subjective.

While it’s definitely true that some bjj schools don’t emphasize takedowns enough, it’s not uncommon to see some that do. Lots of Judokas and wrestlers have transitioned over to jiu jitsu, so the chances of seeing a bjj guy use throws and blast doubles isn’t all that unlikely. Ok… Judo for standup when there is no striking is excellent. But as I have been taught by Judo peeps drilling grip fighting is the key. I have been thrown and submitted by a Blackbelt Judoka in a Master Worlds IBJJF contest. It was a great lesson. My posture, Stance, footwork and reflex has changed now… That being said parallel foot stances that have me leaning forward straight legged while allowing my opponent to have a high collar grip… well… I’m going for a ride!!!! I have been thrown with sacrifice throws and it’s always because if this. I have been leg swept into takedowns. Hell a good ground sweep can rattle your body!!! So what’s the answer? Kodokan vids emphasize Newaza, Tewaza gripping defense, footwork, and for being thrown preparation for ground defense as well as submission work!!! According to the Kodokan manuals Pugilism was highly studied and considered. Footwork, stance, grips and drilled method of attack is somewhat missing in oir training in BJJ. Yet Rickson Gracie had little problem with World Class Judoka. I am sure he was thrown if it stayed on the feet. And yes I know what about a standing kicking opponent or one with a long reach and aggressive throwing punches!!! ??? lol… of course dynamics in tacticality, technicality and physicality is important in variable but… if you train closed and open guard properly as I have against such scenarios…. And learn to catch and trap, parry and invert as one wraps the leg…. Well I have always been fine!!! I have vids on it being done full contact…. And I don’t think it wise for anyone facing high level BJJ leglocking, open leg movements and closed guard attacking skills and extensive skills to engage if one only has the skill to throw, kick or punch!!!

I'm glad the judo guy figured out to stay the fk off the floor. That's all the BJJ numbnutz are built for is to sit and scrape their arse on the floor waiting for that man hug. Guts? The BJJ sure has a pair thinking he could get away with this stuff. Seriously. I'm glad judo guy figured out to stay the fk away from the shoots and to throw that guy as early and as often as possible. that was a treat, godamit. Keep up the good work, bro. These local tourney commentary is awesome. It's great to see the different communities that developed around a specific interest like martial arts. I hope you travel around and do these types of shows. Happy holidays to you and your family, bro.

The rules are a big factor when determining odds of winning. If the tournament settings were reversed, we'd probably see a different outcome.

I think instead of talking bad about the BJJ guy, the focus should be on why did Shintaro post this video of his own student getting thrown around and using a “BJJ Black Belt vs Judo” clickbait.

@@Lagspikee real fight start at stand up, if you mean MMA then different story. In street fight, going to the ground is like a suicide but not if you sure your opponent is just one person
@Lagspikee

@@m5a1stuart83 Sorry, I may have not expressed myself properly. What I'm trying to say is that it's unfair to assess the 'street' effectiveness of BJJ by pressure testing it under Judo competition rules. In reality, both BJJ and Judo are equally effective martial arst in a one-to-one street fight scenario. We know this because there is a plethora of videos on the internet showing untrained attackers being absolutely dominated by trained BJJ/Judo practitioners. What I have yet to see is a video of someone fighting off multiple attackers using Judo... I've seen videos of fighters managing to scrape off multiple attackers using striking, but never in combination with Judo. Even then, if you are fighting multiple attackers you are fighting a losing battle, in which case you are better off running. If you have a video of someone using Judo to fight off multiple opponents, I'll be happy to be proven wrong. Don't get me wrong, I love Judo. I cross train between Judo and BJJ regularly. Though I do get annoyed at how delusional the Judo community can get about fighting off multiple opponents when in reality the vast majority of Judokas train for competition scenarios, which means no leg grabs, no striking, Gi-only and fighting only ONE opponent.
