Articulate man with convictions; agree with most part (assuming what he says is accurate). But, when it comes to equating with Nazi Germany, he loses his equanimity. The CAA-NRC isn't even about never admitting any future Muslim asylum seeker or a Citizenship applicant. Isn't it about specific lot who had arrived in hug numbers from Bangladesh into Bengal and Assam in huge numbers, changing the demography of Assam in a huge way. Of course it would suit TMC and INC as a vote back they don't have to work hard. With due respect, there's no comparison with either Islam in Tamilnadu (which is also becoming Wahabi, sadly with rallies to get rid of Shirq) or the number of Muslims (7-8%). Unlike the partition in Punjab where near equal number of Muslims were exchanged with Pakistan for Hindus and Sikhs and 1 million people lost lives (across all religions, but first started by Muslims in West Punjab - as Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed chronicles, in all honesty) the partition of Bengal saw Hindus sent across to West Bengal in huge numbers whilst Muslims weren't sent there. The huge number of refugees pouring in pre and post 1971 was one of the key reasons Indira Gandhi decided to intervene. While he may be right in saying Hindutva politics is exploiting fault lines, intellectuals like him pretending there was no prima facie problem at all and that we had to accept the current situation as 'fait accompli' and move on and keep the borders porous is a huge risk. Sunderbans in W Bengal is already undergoing a huge demography change to which TMC is turning a blind eye, as per some reports. In my view, what's needed is some straight talk if these issues are to be addressed together cutting across party lines or ideologies. The more INC makes everything a matter of "nafrat ki bazaar' they decide the weapon their opponent (BJP) will use - which is to stoke alarmist theories for there's no joint action possible. Out of 50+ Muslim majority countries worldwide, nearly all are theocratic and treat non-Muslims as second class (or if it's Pakistan, third class). Yet, Hindus alone are repeatedly lectured to respect 'composite culture' (Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb). Agreed that democratic institutions should not be throttled and there should be no politicisation of institutions - but Left is responsible too, to do so (e.g. JNU). If neutrality is not possible to achieve, at least equal representation of Liberal/ Hindutva views should be allowed in forums. Currently, each treats the other as abominable and this is not helping find meeting ground.
