In this video I explain the differences between the first and second series (BK1+BK2) Genesis Coupe 3.8L V6 Lambda engines.

Hi. Have You compared the sedan and coupé engines? Theres some differences specially up in cams and intake... But are the Crank, pistons and rods the same? I favour to think yes

quick question did you ever got it dynoed before getting rid of it? was it more torquie and faster overall? im planning on upgrading my pistons to bk2 cuz of the higher compretion ratio should be like 15% more power just by swapping pistons

My BK2 with 8Speed AT trans came with the RS3800 Engine from factory (Hyundai didn’t release the GDI version here in GCC)

Abdulla Ali Really? Thats weird. So you have the multi port injection engine in a bk2? Did you get a bump up in horsepower at least?

@@seanhaight3939 yeah we got the old engine in BK2 (even the airbox connecting to the manifold is a bk2 one) and no sadly there is no extra power (still 306hp@6300rpm) But at least the bk2 8speed AT trans help make it "feel" quicker.

Abdulla Ali Thats crazy, I never knew that. I like mpi more because your intake valves stay clean and you dont need a high pressure fuel pump that makes a loud cricket noise lol

Same here in Philippines Hyundai didnt release the gdi on a 2013 models. Can you tell me if the mpi version is reliable...? Coz im about to get one used at 33k km..

@@novachrono2236 both engines are very reliable actually since they are base on the same design (most infamous issue is the Rod knock and happen to both for people doing drifting and driving like devils everwhere). Lambada GDI only have that carbon build up issue which need more cleanings and injector caring. RS3800 while is older and weaker but it also more tune friendly too(especially for 🌽)

No they are built differently but they match up and will work on both bk1 and bk2 platforms as long as its from the same engine type

I did the review years ago and cant remember but I believe it had different chains because the number of sprocket teeth on the cams and/or oil pump were different. If you find out, let us know!

Is the automatic a front wheel drive and did the genesis coupe always have a aluminum air intake manifold. And do the air intake manifold gasket match or are they different please if you can get back to me.

I realize this videos is old. Hopefully youll see this and know. Cant you just swap the whole bk2 if you also swap ecu, harness and fuel pump? Am i missing anything? My engine blew so im looking to do this swap. I want the extra 60 hp

It may be possible but i think you would also need a bk2 transmission because i believe the flywheel and transmission input shaft spacing is different. Not positive tho. I also think some of the harnesses and control modules run off of different sensors and signals. You can contact a shop that works on tuning genesis coupes and their techs may be able to give you more info. Theres a shop in florida called english touch performance that works on tons of gens and do engine swaps. Maybe give them a call, they always help the community with questions. Great guys.

Nice video ! Which one is more reliable you think? I heard in France its the BK1 because he has a classic injection, and the direct injection of the BK2 make carbon deposition on valves! Are you agree? Thanks for your answer!

Ano Nyme My honest opinion is that they are both bad engines from the factory 😂. Port injection on the bk1’s help clean the valves and bk2’s have higher compression and make more power but in reality both engines are known to have rod knock or have internal failures as early as 50k miles or 70k kilometers. The v6 is a fun engine but the 2.0t’s are much more reliable overall. I want to buy a v6 but im aware of the issues they have and will be ready to rebuild the engine with stronger forged internals to prevent this from happening again. Hope this helped! @@seanhaight3939 Thanks a lot for your answer! 🙏 I'm shocked because in France the owners say that the Genesis V6 BK1 is very strong and reliable! 😯But they are not many Genesis in France... I want to buy a V6 BK1 but I hesitate now... I'm not rich and I don't want to spend all my money to repair it... I hesitate with the Infiniti G37S Coupe, I think she's more reliable ! What do you think about her ? Or maybe a Lexus iS250 (we don't have the 350 in France) , but its a little slow... ☹️

Ano Nyme From what i hear the g37s are fun reliable cars. They share the same engine with the 370z and those are basically bullet proof engines. If you want a v6 i would recommend the g37 but i love the genesis coupe’s so id recommend the bk2 2.0t with 275 stock horsepower because they are reliable, good on gas, and really fast. They make the same amount of torque as the v6 genesis and are 150 pounds lighter. Alot of v6 genesis coupes are reliable but there are alot of them that go bad early so its a gamble. My friend has a v6 that has 160k on it and runs great. Its a hard decision but good luck!

So I would be able to put a bk2 engine in my 2010 genesis without a problem basically? Also would I need a tune? Just need some advice since I blew my bk1 engine. Thank you ahead of time

I have a follow up video as well that explains more of how to do it but its not plug and play. You need to swap the bk1 heads and a few other top end parts over to the bk2 block. The block is the only thing that is compatible. Not the best budget route since you will have to tune your car afterwards. Would be cheaper to build your own engine with forged internals so you know you wont throw a rod through the block again haha. Make the new engine indestructible 🤘

DIRTYDANGLER I daily drive a 2013 manual 2.0t and i love it. I would recommend a bk2 2013+ model with either engine option because they have more power, the automatic transmissions shift quicker and are more reliable, the manual transmissions shift smoother, the interior is slightly nicer, and its newer so it wont have as much wear and tear. Either way any genesis coupe you pick will be a fun car. The 2.0t models make turbo noises and have good mpg while the v6 models sound more aggressive. People say the 3.8 v6 is faster so you have to get it, but in all reality they are almost the same in a straight line. If you want to have fun in the car make sure you buy one that has a limited slip differential because mine didnt have one and it does a one wheel peel almost every time i floor it. Good luck man

@@seanhaight3939 thanks for the reply man, i'm def getting a 2013+, reason i'm so torn between them is based off of reliability, my thinking might be flawed but I'm learning towards a 2.0t cause it's not direct injected, also the motors seem a little more reliable and easier to work on. Is this wrong thinking? Also planning on getting a manual, ive been doing lots of reading and many of the problems seem due to abuse, maybe i'm just trying to justify it haha.

DIRTYDANGLER Yeah i believe the 2.0t is the better option for reliability and ease of maintenance. Ive seen alot of v6’s blow up and send rods through the bottom of the block at 80-120 thousand miles with proper maintenance on both bk1 and bk2 models. The 2.0t has far less engine failures from a collective ownership standpoint. I have 3 buddies that also have 2013 2.0t turbo gens and we all have around 100k-120k miles with no issues so far. The worst thing ive seen from a 2.0t is rod knock from the owner running the engine low on oil. Besides that my whole 2.0t gen group hasnt had any issues.

Are you sure it's a non-interference engine? I didn't find any data on it. It's a bit odd for a modern engine on a sports car to be non-interference, even belt-driven economy engines are interference nowadays.

BBNHFAK Not positive but the pistons have cut outs on them for the valves to sit in but that could be used for piston/valve timing when the valves open and the pistons are at the top of the cylinder. Ill ask my local shop for the answer and ill let you know.

I'm planning on bk2 swapping my bk1 when my engine fucks up on my bk1, what challenges do will I be facing by doing it like making it legal??

Jose Santiago Its not illegal to swap engines you just need to make sure it has catalytic converters if your state has smog testing. Doing a full swap will be difficult because you have to swap everything over. I swapped my bk1 with a bk2 short block to increase the compression ratio. The bk1 has a better engine in my opinion because its port injection and the valves stay cleaner. Id rebuild the bk1 engine and either turbo it or add a tune for 20-30 more whp

Jose Santiago My bk1 through a rod through the block so i bought a used bk2 complete engine for $500 on Facebook marketplace, stripped it down, and used the shortblock with my bk1 cylinder heads and it runs great. I sold all the extra parts off the engine and actually made money. Didnt cost me anything except time in the garage. See if you can find the same deal somewhere. If you look on my channel you can see my video on it. I explain everything

No the harnesses are different. The chassis is the same and i believe the engine mounts are the same. Besides that the powertrain and control modules are completely different.

Jeremy Livingston I actually sold that gen coupe a few months ago haha. The engine ran strong but the trans was low on fluid and went into limp mode so i sold it. I have too many gens rn anyway and i didnt want to pay to fix it haha. But yeah the bk2 short block is strong and can take a beating

Im not sure but i would imagine they are going to be almost identical except for a few things. You can probably buy an updated engine and use it but make sure you swap over the different parts so itll work with your ecu

GNR325 I believe its eithr 6 or 8 bolts on the flywheel/flexplate near the rear main seal. Id have to go look but i think it is 6

6:05 in you say this is a non interference engine but there are a whole lot of sources that say this is actually interference. Which is it :)

Yeah any v6 trans will fit a bk1 and bk2 v6 engine. Same goes for the 2.0t

Nathan Henry Idk if the bk1 tach would work with the bk2 ecu? Might work tho. I knew the blocks were the same so I just swapped it onto the bk1 cylinder heads. The car runs fine with the bk2 block installed with no issues. It’s a fun car

Nathan Henry Yeah no problem. I know the torque converters are different and I think the flywheel/flexplate are different on the two so you’ll need those as well
