how do you guys get so many ego gifts

I'm a new player struggling to understand this boss's mechanic, can you explain it? It says it stores damage on the previous turn, but it doesn't say what those stored stacks actually do, and my testing hasn't shown a big effect; on the turn before the big mutliattack, I've tried using all defensives to avoid dealing any damage and successfully kept its stacks at 0, and it didn't matter at all. The multiattack broke my E.G.O. clash attempt and instantly killed the entire team, despite absorbing no damage. I've also staggered it on the absorb turn and it just tpks me once it recovers. I'm sure if you have a powerful and/or synergistic team or particular powerful moves that can clash with it, you can just ignore the mechanic and kill it before it can use it, but I don't and I don't understand how the mechanic works and what you're supposed to do about it.

I jist started playing and im at chapter 4 rn, should i prioritize spending the blood soaked scabbards on growth items like xp tickets or try to save for BL don?
