As black Americans we need to realize we’re a different people now. we’ve been out of Africa for centuries. We should love and honor our origins but be wise enough to realize we must carve our own path.

I am a black American woman who has traveled extensively world -wide, in Africa with and without a group or a husband/boyfriend and with and without white friends. I can only share my experience in Africa-when I traveled to Senegal with a native, my experience was amazing, same in South Africa, but outside of that I was scammed, harassed, taken advantage of (not sexually)and felt very unsafe. My experience in 4 Caribbean islands was the complete opposite. I was greeted with love, and kindness-like a family member,invited into locals homes for meals, dancing and oral history of the islands and her people. Black Americans, spend your money and expatriate where you are celebrated, treated with acceptance and kindness and can build a community and home. Turn towards the Caribbean friends.
@dxwallace55
@dxwallace55 8 месяцев назад
Bout to get long winded I know, but I made that same Caribbean comment in my other comment on this page, in that, if I had a gazillion dollars, I'd move to the British Virgin Islands. There are other options, but the British virgin Islands stole my heart. Not much "culture shock", and sure, they do some things differently, they got a lot of "hustlers" down there and you gotta watch your back like anywhere, but that is the art and science of picking the right Caribbean spot, same skillset as where to move in the USA. At the end of the day the Caribbean is a "Weather Thing", and a more laid back lifestyle. I don't have any real burning desire to leave the USA, I had to find my own peace in my mind right here mentally, not in a new physical location because I just think I'd be stepping out of one country's issues and problems to another. Nonetheless when I was in the British Virgin Islands I loved the people I met. A young dude delivered groceries to the villa where I was staying, I took care of him and gave him a big tip like $40, and told him to treat himself to dinner. He didn't wanna initially take it, but I insisted, and eventually he did, I guess my thought process is both tourist and host take care of each other. I'm not coming to his homeland to take, I wanted to feel like I was giving and appreciative and supporting local business and his entrepreneurship. He ended up showing me around all the islands, eating good, real local food, we had a great time. I told him he should start a business as a personal tour guide. Met his mother, she cooked me a real Caribbean dinner. I don't think Johnny Cake is native to BVI (Bahamas I think), but her Johnny Cake was on point!!! I nicknamed her "Mama", something we do in the states to an elder we revere. I know enough to know it would be an insult to try to pay her, but I bought the best bottle of Rum on Tortola when I came over, she make some great drinks with coconut water. Though Mama drunk straight shots, she drunk us under the table LOL!!! Never forget it...... (If only all Black people around the world treated each other this way, there's no limit to what Black people can do)

Hi, Denmark here. Over several years I spent a lot of time at a place called "Afro-Club" here in Copenhagen, where african and afro-american students spent their weekends. I was there mainly because of the music and the weed, but of course I got acquainted with a lot of black people. And my general experience was that africans from Africa invariably were very laid back and easy-to-get-along-with people, who regarded us white people as weird exemplars of the human race with very weird cultural preferences. Of course this feeling was mutual, African culture is very different from Danish culture, so we had a lot of good laughs at each others' weird habits. While American blacks very often were entitled, bossy, arrogant and very angry people who saw us whites almost as enemies. I formed quite a few friendships among the Africans, even went to Ghana as a tourist to visit one of them, but none among the Afro-Americans. This is of course just anecdotal, but to me it meant a lot: I learned a lot about living a more laid-back life from my African friends, while I learned absolutely nothing from the Americans I met. Cheers from Denmark!

There's a reason why no one has ever heard a white American ask... "What are you going to do for us white folks?" It's not because of any so-called "privilege," it's because white, and even Hispanic and Asian Americans think in terms of all of us. Today's American black community has a tendency to self-segregate from the rest, and then complain that they're being overlooked which often upsets them, often causes them to lash-out, which in turn perpetually feeds the stereotype. There's an expectation of conformance amongst the citizens of any civilized society, so until the chip-on-the-shoulder, defiant posturing thing goes away, I think the majority of black folks will be relegated to watching the rest of society pass them by. I realize there are exceptions, but I'm talking about the elephant here, not the mouse.

This was a very sweet video with positive intent. I'm enough Italian to call myself Italian American. But if I went to Italy, while I might have a blast, I think I'd really find out how American I was, NOT how Italian I was. I expect this to be the case with African Americans as well. Why do people pack up everything and move to an African country without first applying to live there on a permanent basis, getting i.e. getting your permanent residency visa? It's so strange to see people move to another country without being a permanent resident. If you find a country you want to live in, visit first on your tourist visa study the culture, the people, the country, find out about their governmental policies, and see if that's a place you could live on a long term basis. No country is perfect, America is not perfect neither are any countries in Africa, but I don't understand jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire type of thinking. Also make sure your religious philosophy gels. It is very, very different to live in the West and then try to move to Africa. America is a melting pot, people of every race, religion and creed lives in America. Africa is very tribal. Yes, you are black and they are black, but there are many tribes. People need to use wisdom.

@tubman1868. You are Correct in that assessment! What Black people experience among ourselves is systematically-implanted wherever we go! Thinking-speaking-acting-emoting & perceiving in pre-programmed modes of mutual hostility that were designed to produce the effect to precision. The lands, the homes, the resources that generated our DNA have been tampered-with for 700 years, at least!! To “structure” conflict and confusion with each other, Sunday school manners with everyone else! That “fear,” that mental Doll Test behavior, is not natural, not biologically-intended. It’s man-made & systematically “works” to near-perfection all over Earth. Without learning what it is, HOW it works, in all major Areas of Activity, we remain doomed to just keep right on replicating disharmony, distrust, functioning as agents, as scouts, as muppets for the planetary rulers to exploit, to deceive & to dominate-for the “wealth,” we never fight to control. We just want control over each other, as did all indigenous peoples globally, based on the global results. We have all the Bibles. Others have all the land we failed to respect & to protect, collectively. Including ourselves as people living on those various lands. As long as that system exists, remains rooted, dominates our Mind (collectively), it doesn’t matter what else we “learn.” It won’t be universally applicable, so it won’t be True. Without Truth, Justice & Correctness in Results, no “love,” no “happiness,” no “peace,” can ever be actually proven to exist. They cannot inside Systemic Injustice anyway. Injustice doesn’t co-exist inside Justice; only one of them is True & exists based on universal laws.

I'm a former immigration officer for the US. What people often fail to understand is that moving to a country on a tourist visa is illegal. Yes you can extend a tourist visa but if you're intent is to live in a country on an improper visa that is illegal. So, when you present yourself to an immigration officer for a visa extension he will be suspicious of your intent because we are trained to look for people who are violating this law. This is likely the reason the second woman was only given a two week extension. The length of a tourist visa is generally up to the discretion of the officer. Also, as an former immigration officer I can attest to the fact that many are not nice. However, much of the attitude comes from dealing with members of the public who do not understand the rules and take umbrage at being questioned. The refrain is often they feel as though they are being treated like criminals because the questions are invasive. Well, the job is to determine your right to enter the country. I'm not excusing the behavior. They are public servants and should behave accordingly. I'm just trying to shed insight into why they are assholes. I have been guilty of the behavior on occasion but even when I was not, I received complaints. My best advice is to with the correct visa for your travel purposes. If you do not qualify for a long-term residence visa be warned that you will have to endure scrutiny and face possible denial of renewal of you visa or possibly denial of entry altogether. Oh yeah, and if you are Black, you really need to have the proper documents because, racism and profiling are rampant in the immigration services worldwide.

Although he was born in Ghana, he grew up in the US but returned to Ghana five years ago. He wanted to start a business in tourism, so he asked me if we wanted him to be our driver. We asked about the price. I researched the prices of private drivers. The prices were starting at $125 per day. He asked, much less for the three of us. We also agreed to buy gas, which was around $10 to $15 per day. From the first day, he also became our bodyguard 😊. He negotiated all of the prices, even when I was willing to pay. I am returning next week and may look at staying long-term, primarily because of age and health issues.

You are indeed the most honest African I have heard on the continent on this topic. I’ve been going in and out of Africa since 1994 and have lived in 3 different countries for more than 1 year in each. Most Blacks from the USA going to Africa have rose colored glasses on and think we will be welcomed back home. But what we all must realize is that colonialism and the system of white supremacy is still alive and well and functioning inside and outside of us unless we have done the necessary internal work to rid ourselves of it. We have been raised on these inferior ideologies and subliminally function from them. I have said before that we need a white supremacy and colonialism detox center on the continent. But in truth, just like miseducation got us in this condition, proper education can get us out of it. We MUST start dialoging among ourselves about the realities of our narratives and create new realities together. It may take generations to get where we want and need to be but we must start now! Africa belongs to all Black people!

Hi am Namibian and I fully agree with you. African Americans really need to stop looking at Africa with rose colored glasses. It's not some kind of fantasy it's a real continent with real growth issues because of colonialism and bad governance. Educate yourself and do research on the country you are going to, understand how the system works there don't just close your eyes and pin point a country on the map coz the beaches are pretty or because you did one nonsense ancestry test online and it said go to Timbuktoo. Go thought the process, read the diff govt legislations to hear how things work and choose the one that bear suits your life style, your expectations, your skills on what you can do to earn a living. When it comes to immigration and papers don't try to take the short cut by having someone do it for you, go through the process yourself if you have to sir in ques then do so because you will learn so much more going to the actually authorities than involving a 3rd party. 70% 3rd party people who handle visa papers will scam you ones they see that you don't know anything about the sysytem, coz most people are desperate for survival.

The reason why Africans hate African Americans is the same reason why they put us in a hole (Jacob) and sold us to Egypt. They did the same thing in 1619 when we first arrived on the shores of Virginia. The African American is from the Tribe of Judah. Google...map of 1747 Kingdom of Judah. On top of the Slave Coast you'll see KINGDOM OF JUDAH. That's where every African American is from. Judah is God's chosen people. King Jesus was called The Lion of Judah. Why did the continent of Africa sell the citizens of Judah into slavery? Because the citizens of Judah refuse to worship any religion but King Jesus as their Lord. Why was Jacob sold into slavery by his brothers in ancient times? Jacob was the son who refused to worship his brothers religion. Who physically, mentally, spiritually is Judah? Judah was the best of the best, the creme de la creme of the 12 tribes of Israel. They were the best in EVERYTHING they did. Judah were the ones responsible for the Hieight of ancient Egypt in the world. Judah is responsible for the Height of USA in the world. The continent of Africa know who Judah is and the great sin they did against God's chosen people. I personally believe Africa needs to apologize to King Jesus AND to the African American PUBLICLY before they EVER receive back control of her resources.

Look at a map of Africa from 1747, it was called Negroland and at the bottom it shows the slave coast. The Tribe of Judah (Whiddah) camped there and they were the people who were brought to America on slave ships in chains, Deuteronomy 28,29. All of Africa was NOT enslaved and there were Black skinned people already here when they arrived. Also in the Zondervan Bible Dictionary it states that the Negroes/Black Americans are NOT from the same family lineage as the other darker races including the Egyptian, Ethiopians, Libyan and most Africans!! Last thing, shockingly Africans are NOT taught about slavery in America!!

There are 54 countries in Africa and people are judging the entire continent off of a few experiences in 1 country. This has to stop. I've travelled to 13 African countries and can tell you that each country is different. Culture is different, organization and infrastructure is different, they way they view and treat foreigners is different. So it baffles me that everyone is over here bashing Africa based off of 1 country and a few people's experience. I got residency with easy in Cote D'ivoire. People were friendly, it was a bit unorganized and I had to go back 3 times, but I got it done. Ghana is easy to extend your visa. I think people also have to realize different regions are different as well. West Africa is completely different from East Africa which is different from South Africa. Francophone is different from Anglophone and Lusaphone countries. I had an amazing experience in Africa. I feel more of a connection in West Africa. i see the culture to be more familiar. I definitely have connected with many people. But each country is different. I connected easily with so many people in Nigeria. Ghana took a little longer to connect. Cote DIvoire there is a language barrier so feel the connection is a bit more superficial. Angola loved the people there, but culturally there is a bit of difference. South Africa connected well. Before people generalize Africa, they should travel and get to know many countries in different regions of the continent.

As a dark chocolate lady raised in the diaspora I agree- colorism is worldwide! I felt welcome in Uganda by the women there but babyyyyyyy in GHANAAAAA that was completely different! It was clear the women did not like my existence! All I can say is thank GOD for GHANAIN men! I was sad because I was looking to connect to more sisters for business purposes. However- I only have successful transactions with East African and South African ladies. So far all of my west African partners are guys. I pray that improves one day. Much Love!

Thank you for sharing your story. What do you think the main reason is for the mistreatment from local Ghanaian women, in comparison to other African women that you came across? Was it colorism or nationalism? Perhaps, both. I would like to learn a little more about your experience. Thanks again!

All Black skinned people are NOT from the same family lineage. That's a lie, for instance in the Zondervan Bible Dictionary it states that the Negroes/Black Americans are NOT from the same family lineage as the other darker races including the Egyptian, Ethiopians, Libyan and most Africans.

Moving to any Foreign Country is trying and can be expensive. Expecting people to welcome you that you never met, does not make any sense because you would not expect that in America. Folks move from Atlanta to Chicago, don’t like it and move back. There is no welcome Party when you move within The States just because you are Black. People from different geographic cultures have to work to get along. The scamming and insensitivity is terrible, but in the States the same stuff happens-Colorism, Classism, etc.

When I watch these videos and see blk Americans complaining about how badly they’re treated when going to Africa as a whole it always makes me ask myself what exactly are our blk American ppl looking for?? Africans see black Americans as AMERICANS… some of us desperately try to hold on to or grasp on to a place and culture that only our ancestors have been over 400 years ago. We are Americans our ppl helped build and shape this land and idk why so many blk Americans are fighting against that. Sure it’ll be nice to go to Africa and help make it better but we aren’t going to be celebrated for going there we get the same treatment as any other group of people regardless of skin color

If they don't like it, they can go elsewhere to other continets. An AA couple talked badly about Rwanda without aknowledging that people there are traumatized from the 90s. As a West African, I was pissed off that they insulted that country because I'm a panafricanist.

Yeah, I get that impression too. I have never seen a white (European or not), Asian or Middle Easterner ever complain about living in Africa. They thrive. They make money. Sometimes they get kicked out because of politics, but the never complain like the African Americans or to a lesser extent, the diaspora from other countries. Three years ago I fantasized about going to Africa and building a business. I was taking classes, networking and then all of a sudden the desire left me. The spirit spoke to me communicated to me this was not a place I should go to. I may still visit, but I can't live there. I am happy for the people who have been able to make Africa their home. But maybe the continent is not the place for us, or at least not at this time. I still think it's a great experience for people to visit the Motherland.

It's because they are smart enough to come prepared. They bring enough money to hand out bribes, that's number 1. They are coming in to open businesses. When you employ people why do you think they will have animosity towards you? You, AAs, on the other hand come in penniless but DEMAND respect!!! Respect for what?
