A presentation exploring what the people in the Book of Mormon may have looked like for use with art, film or just your own imagination based on how the terms "black" and "white" are used in the Book of Mormon and the Bible.
In part 1 we explore scriptures in that discuss skin color in both the Book of Mormon and the Bible.

I have a diverse seminary class and have been searching for a way to satisfactorily address this topic. Up until now, everything I've read has felt like a bit of a stretch to justify what the Book of Mormon says. However, your video truly convinced me why our previous notions are wrong. Thank you for expressing it so clearly.

As a non-Mormon, I find this to be an interesting explanation. But it seems hard to try to objectively look at Jacob 3:5-9 and Alma 3:5-17 and not think that the curse of the skin isn't in any way related to the common thinking of Joseph Smith's day, an extension of the curse of Cain and the curse of Ham. But even if you are correct, what does this say about the validity of all the living prophets and apostles between Smith and 1978 who promoted the skin curse in church doctrine and practice. I can't imagine the true apostles in the post-resurrection New Testament promoting such false doctrine in the church.

This is super eye-opening. Thank you for examining this, it has actually helped me out a lot and makes total sense! It just clarifies what I suspected all along.

In opening may I say: That I am a black South African who has questions I feel I will ask the Lord about my people based on a number of issues only my people or those like mine all over this planet have/still go through. I watch how people try to explain this matter away and partially address and tip-toe around the naked uncomfortable truth and I make peace with it and do not expect much out of man on this issue. The Lamanites and Nephites skins were not the same. It is truth and correct to view them as Black and White that is how they are and to set a mark on these people clearly there must be a change brought on them in order for these people to not be enticing( attractive) to their counterparts. Though the Lord seeth not as man seeth, he is not colour blind nor a divisive being, He fulfilleth His purposes as he seeth proper and I think men try to speak for Him and perpetuate the skin issue further.

Thank you for speaking up. I appreciate your insight. Could it still be metaphorical, and that they became loathsome because of the bad choices they were making, so it was expressed by their bad choices in how they took care of their outward appearances? They became hunters and not farmers... so, more rough and rugged looking because of their lifestyle? It was hard for me to read these scriptures and not think it was obviously speaking about skin, appearances, and loathsome to others. But, I feel good about using the Bible to help clarify.

Thank you for that amazing insight, I love the metophoric example given, and all the scriptures to back that up! Thank you for this video, I can now explain in better details and have refrence to back it up to my seminary students! You have made my teaching a bit easier to my students from this video!

It is not metaphorical. This is why the church will remain under condemnation as D&C states. People are not taking the Book of Mormon seriously so the condemnation persists.

Thank you so much!!! This is *exactly* what I was hoping to find... comparison of this scripture with other scriptures from the Bible. This is just what Nephi wrote about ... how the Bible and BOM will “grow” together! They will help to clarify each other ❤️

Where do I find part 2? Also, I would like to hear the thought re the mark put on the Lamanites that, among other things, prevent intermarriage. Thank you.

The intent of the mark was to make the wicked un-enticing to God's people (2 Nephi 5:22). What could be more un-enticing than someone with a darkness about them. Perhaps you've met someone that at first you thought was very appealing. Then, once you got to know them a little, the darkness of their countenance made them very un-enticing. The opposite is also true. Part 2 is on my channel, "Beyond Black and White" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yZY4BcXUrsE.html

I've heard some people say that the Nephites might have had their own racial prejudices, since a desire for light skin and a rejection of dark skin is (unfortunately) common in many cultures. It's an interesting thought, I don't know how much merit it has, if any, but I wanted to just leave this here. Great videos, by the way 👍

Your assumptions about native culture and white skin is wrong. I am assuming you think the book of Mormon took place in Mexico. And where the ancestors of the Aztec and Maya. They had a word for handsome men and would call them "xipetztli tomatl" beautiful smooth skin like a tomato. The tomato was from the Americas. The natives from Mexico loved their copper skin and though it was beautiful. When they saw white skin for the first time they thought they were people from the underworld because they lacked color and smelled bad (like a corps). So assuming that people have always thought white skin was better is not true.

There has been much speculation about the origins of the Igbo people, as it is unknown how exactly the group came to form. The word for Hebrew used in the Bible is עברי (pronounced "Ivri"), Côte d'Ivoire ("Cote d' Ivri" ) The coast of the Hebrews . Eri In Genesis 46:16 Eri (עֵרי "watchful") is the son of Gad. He was the progenitor of the Erites. (Numbers 26:16) Aguleri, meaning "Agulu of Eri", is a town in southeastern Nigeria. It is a major cradle of Igbo civilization, and the first settlement of Eri (Eri-aka) was in Aguleri. Its Ezeora dynasty, which has produced 34 kings to date, is one of the oldest in eastern Nigeria. Due to the Assyrian captivity and exile of the 10 Northern Tribes of Israel, as well as the scattering of Israel after the revolt at Masada, as well as the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. it is believed many Danites ventured into Africa, settling in what is now known as the Sudan (SuDAN) and Ghana, also call GaDangme, meaning “People of Gad and Dan.” Ancient Ghana was referred to as Wagandu. Dan is also believed to have settled in Dahomey or Dan Homey, which being translated means, “Belly of Dan” and is now known as the Benin Republic and Togo. As a result of such scattering it is believes some of Dan possibly mingled or merged with the Igbo’s of Gad and become the sect of Igbo who reveres and later began to worship pythons. Some scholars links this to the prophesied paganization of exiled Israel as recorded in Deut. 28 as well as Jacobs prophetic blessing linking Dan to a serpent (Gen. 49:17). That is amazing and you have it right on. In the Arab culture, the Arabs (Muslims in particular) pray that they may be white. Despite what we see, most Muslims are actually more lighter skin than thought. However, what they are asking is to be pure and clean rather than to be dark or the word black is used. Now, black does have a note of red though we know that red is a distinct word. Anciently, red was meant to be dark or a darker color than the red we use today. That same word is used several times in the Arabic Book of Mormon especially in those verses you mentioned. So, white is pure and black is not. It has nothing to do with ethnicity.
