First time painting lightning, from a reference pic. This was a request from my friend; hopefully this is of some help for all of you (even though I feel like I could still improve on it) :D:D Happy painting!

Hair dryer makes masking fluid stick more to the paper and makes it difficult to remove. Painting was fabulous. Can't wait to try it.

Delightful! I really enjoyed this subject as my husband and I used to love to watch the lightening from our front porch when we first purchased our home. There were no other houses here at that time, so nothing to break the wind; the storms were so violent and beautiful at the same time. I would set up my little video camera pointed to the sky to capture the lightening strikes as it recorded our "front porch banter" during the storm. I treasure those videos now at the 10th anniversary of his passing, but I never dreamed I might be able to work on capturing it in a water color painting! I will be capturing stills from those videos & I will try! Thank you for this-- it means a great deal to me!

Hi Nianiani nice tutorial! Personally speaking, when I'm using masking fluid I don't use a hair dryer as I think that affects the masking fluid - it may make it stick to the paper more or melt into the paper more. Anyway that's my personal observation and experience of it. Great job though and thanks for sharing your tips!

The issues you have taking off the masking fluid is probably because you heat dried the paper -and the fluid- which makes it stick more, and it takes the paper away a bit
@jasher2847
@jasher2847 Год назад
Yes, you're right. Heat sets it into the page, and she heat dried it several times. Leaving it on an unfinished work for more than a few days can also make it stick badly like that. Ah well, live and learn. Good video on values, though. I love the B&W work.

I knew of this. But there are some areas which weren't affected. And I also tried it without the hair drier on scrap paper afterwards, and it did the same 😬😬😬 wonder if areas of the paper was a bit damp or damaged before I applied the masking fluid.. since I live in a very humid country 😶
@jasher2847
@jasher2847 Год назад
@@Nianiani That actually sounds like a defective or poorly mixed bottle of masking fluid, because it's essentially behaving as though it were old straight out of the bottle, and only in some spots. Also, I have seen artists mix their masking fluid with water (!!!) or apply on top of a plain water wash which shocked me when I saw it. I'd have thought this extra water would ruin its ability to bond, but no, came out perfectly. I tried to think of one of the videos where I saw this mixing; I'm sorry but I could only find one. This is one by Yoko Harusaki where she applies masking fluid on top of a water wash so that she gets a diffuse effect: Watercolor draw with swab【Mimosa】v=LHHua04llJY. The masking pulled right up at the end, just as it should (though she does appear to be scrubbing at it with a kneaded eraser). So it's not the paper or the humidity, though if it were stored in a very hot or sunny place that might affect it too. Give that bottle an extended and vigorous shaking; if it still doesn't pull up as it should, buy a new one and trash the one you have now. I store mine upside down and in a cool dark place, maybe that will help you too. I am not a professional artist, these are just my experiences. Thank you for making these videos; I have learned a lot from you!

@@jasher2847 That is awesome! Thank you so much for the info. I'll give it a go. I rarely use masking fluid, so I don't have much experience at all

This is stunning. The monochrome fits surprisingly well with the theme! I just wanted to make a suggestion for a future painting : could you attempt to paint a jacaranda tree? I would really love to see it in your style. All the best for future paintings 😊

Thank you so much, Nia. I really appreciate it my friend. Note my name change here so you know this is me!❤🤗 you are so sweet. I lost you messages from your wedding and would appreciate it if you could resend them to me. I thought I had your email but I can't find it. I found some good cotton paper at Ali Express 140 lb, 100% cotton, cold pressed, Baohong a roll 27 cm x 10 M.for $100.88 Canadian funds, with free shipping, they even included a pair of white gloves so you don't mark the paper when handling it. I usually use Arches but it has really gone up in price since covid. I also bought some lovely natural hair travel brushes at Dainayu with beautiful points, reasonably priced, also at Ali Express. I like their brushes better than my Escoda. I hope you will find it a good price for you too. Again, thank you for showing me how to do the lightning, I really was struggling. Hugs and love to you. Some masking fluids reactly poorly to heat and rip your paper or even create outlines. Try letting the masking fluid and paint dry naturally and see if it is still difficult to remove
@Nianiani
@Nianiani Год назад
sadly I have tried that, and got similar results... I think it's probably the condition of m paper, since my room is really hot and humid...
