Black people are actually seen as really strong or hilarious in anime. Unless they are a villain, then they're greedy and loud.Black women in anime are almost always drawn really sexy though.
+DarthMobian ™ I had a whole 2 hour discussion about this same thing with my Japanese friends. The reason for black people both guys and girls if they are good, are always drawn with a more happy friendly face. For good black guys they are really overly strong and loud and happy or really calm and mellow, the same applies for black 2 but the black female is drawn really sexy and always have more boobs and ass. Now switch the nature if the black guy is bad he is exactly like what u said greedy and loud and will have a very smug unfriendly face, while the black girl if bad will become even sexier and seductive plus really mysterious and very mature
Manga in Japan: I have created this very well thought-out character which happens to be black. Comics in the U.S.: I have created this black character because I like diversity. I don't have much of a backstory for him/her, but I'll figure something out later. That's why the characters are better in Japan.
daniel280456 it’s kinda ironic that Japan is one of the most homogeneous country, yet their dark skinned characters are really thought out with likable characteristics and has unique design. America has a lot of people from different backgrounds yet they only care about having said characters to have diversity instead of treating them as actual people.
Most of these comments have no idea what their talking about. Twitter will tear you a new one if your skin tone doesn't match the character you cosplay.
In recent year, ya there are a lot of people descended from migrant background in japan. Turkish, Latinos (Chile, Brazil, Peru, Columbia), Eastern European (Russians) and Africans live in the densely populated area of Tokyo.
I love this video, it's nice to see us blacks in an anime I'm a big anime fan, and I also love how they incorporated different variations of us some are bald with a goatee, some are muscular with dreads, and the women are drawn sexy and unique just like how they are in real life, it's also really nice to see us blacks in anime with powerful roles, such as being captain of an army, an intelligent strategist, possessing unique abilities, and also inheriting physical attributes. I love it!!!! Want to see more amines with blacks and other nationalities, and if any Japanese person has seen this post I'm writing I just want to tell you guys how I absolutely just love everything about y'all culture, from style of fashion, the language, music, artwork, proverbs, everything!!!!! I love Japanese people.
John Jones If you ever read this, I want you to know how great it is to hear that. Here is to hoping to see more anime series with dark skinned and/or african descended characters doing amazing things in the future.
It's pretty cool to see Black people in animes tbh. I always wondered how they would be drawn as Asia (the continent of course) doesn't have many Black people. I'm glad we're all drawn differently and not carbon copies :P
Big-Bonkin-Head what you said is garbage anybody with different ethnicities and colors could portray in anime #AllLivesMatter not just #BlackLivesMatter
Yoruichi is about 5"2 they said in her wikia and she is the representation of a black female. Anime characters may "appear" to be tall but they are really short
+RU-vid I HATE There's nobody with purple hair or yellow eyes. And if they were going to make a black character they would make it more obvious and exaggerated so the straight hair cancels her being black out.
@@dragonkim3060 you literally don't understand, I know that purple isn't a hair color but still there are different types of black hair you won't understand because your use to the curly or straight, but there are variety of black hair types not all are afros
Dragon Kim mate she is basically a spirit princess who was trying to be an assasin and who have the powers of a cat, she was never a human she is black descendant but her family have more than 1000 years in the soul society
Great list but you missed A LOT my dude. Add these: Matthieu from Eureka Seven Gidget from Eureka Seven Hilda from Eureka Seven Linck from Eureka Seven Elena Peoples from Eureka Seven AO Jun Hono from Mazinger series (she's Blasian but she counts) Gloria from Daphne in the Brilliant Blue May (the sister of the Wong-Chang-Lee brothers) from Daphne in the Brilliant Blue (technically they're all biracial since their mother is a black woman) Gorobei from Samurai Seven Shimada Kanbei from Samurai Seven (technically he's racially ambiguous but he's rockin what looks like dreads) April from Darker than Black Sherry Cromwell from A Certain Magical Index Blue from Wolf's Rain Garnet MacLane from Dragonaut: The Resonance Hild from Ah My Goddess (fuck them for making the "devil" a black woman) Urd from Ah My Goddess (Hild's biracial daughter) Minami Rika (maybe?) from Highschool of the Dead (she's either blasian or just has dark skin with NO tanlines) Nadia from Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (she's African; fun fact: she was originally gonna have an afro before the artist changed at the last minute) Urabe Rika from Inazuma Eleven (she appears to be blasian plus she has "pronounced" lips unlike the other characters) Villetta Nu from Code Geass (she's racially ambiguous so she could be ANYTHING) Jadakins from Tokyo Tribes (fun fact: they this into a live action movie in 2014) Yasuke (yes, the historical African samurai) from Nobunaga Concerto (funny twist on how he arrives in Japan) April from Darker than Black Yea...I watch anime. LOL. There's a lot more tho.
they did have a black guy in fairy tail who were in love with a white girl and her father didn't like and tried to use team fairy tail to stop them to being together
This just means we need to start representing ourselves in anime. We need to gather talented black artists to create shows featuring more black people in dominant roles. Stop waiting on other races to portray you in a favorable light!
I don't think you need black artists for that. There are people of other races who really like characters that just happen to be black. It is not anime, but for example i really really love Ekko from league of legends. I love his teenager attitude and the whole time control theme. He just happens to be black
@@1276magaki I get what you're saying but we need this. Yes, there are amazing black characters created by non black people but young black kids that have a passion for animation can be inspired by animators AND characters that look like them. Plus that would mean more money in the black entertainment industry.
+[TheViciousLuxray] Yeah. White people and asian people have lips too, yet they don't draw the lips on white/asian anime characters. This is coming from a black man with extremely thin lips.
+[TheViciousLuxray] I feel the same, not all animes are bad but some are definitely guilty. It's not even the fact that it's bigger because most black people have bigger lips. The problem is when there is no definition in the lips and it's just one massive circle like a doughnut . The doughnut lips/crazy afro combo makes me facepalm every time.
love this video very well put together + the music is super lit i like seeing a collective of the roles we played and overall characters representation throughout series even if its small or not
Omoi from naruto shippuden is hella underrated. He's my third favourite anime character. 1st being Minato from naruto/naruto shippuden 2nd being Ban from the 7deadly sins
Nice video! I'd also like to include: Lee Sampson, from the Cowboy Bebop movie: Being the tech guy for the main villain and an over all anti-social dork make him a nice break from several stereotypes we see in anime and even western media today. . Lizzie Garland, from Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom: The right-hand woman, bodyguard, and close personal friend of quazi-villain Claudia McCunnen, she's quick to anger, but not to the point of poor self controll. She's also oddly compassionate for a career criminal and murderer. Granted, you could say it's problematic that she spends the entire series obeying every order she's given by one white woman to the word, however unlike the phantoms, it's heavily established that Lizzie's obedience of Claudia isn't due to ownership or even the simple fact that Claudia is her boss, but from her admiration of Claudia and the two's mutual respect for each other. . Isaac Wisemel, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom: One of the most powerful members of the underground crime syndicate Inferno. He's rather quick to anger and often gets into arguments with Inferno leader Raymond McGuire. He is also the leader of the Los Angeles gang named "the Bloodies," which is probably supposed to be a fictional counterpart to the real-life american gang "The Bloods" which, while not racially exclusive, mostly consists of African-Americans. . Matthew, from Eureka Seven: a bit goofy at most times, he's one of the ace pilots for the notorious Gekko State. While being rather laid-back, he usually has a spare moment to help his crew-mates, (particularly Renton,) if they need it. . Hilde, from Eureka Seven: A down-to-earth, sensible woman, she is also one of the ace-pilots for the Gekko State. She's always very kind to people, (except arguably her boyfriend Matthew....yeah, the only two black people in the gekko state are going out together.) She is a very responsible crew member and one of the most practical-headed and mature members of the Gekko State. . Linck, from Eureka Seven: He's one of the 3 children adopted by Eureka. Not much to say about him other than, He's a kid who runs around doing kid things and being over-all annoying like his two siblings. . On a side-note, the "Clowns" biker gang fighting the "Capsules" at the beginning of Akira appear to be black or of african descent, however most of them are either wearing face-obscuring helmets or clown makeup, or just aren't on screen long enough to get a good look at, so it's hard to say.
Dude, really gotta post this shit? as a black person it doesn't have to be nothing when there's no black, whites, or middle eastern people in it. ANime has always do have Japanese characters before they added new race of people and it was loved back before there was some changes. Don't think being black means we are better than most because ethnicity does not give us any power.
you forgot the black scientist from Guilty Crown,Majuub from DBZ,the gay black boxer in Gantz, the bandit in Trigun Badland Rumble, the black boxers in Baki the Grappler, the black maid in Hanaukyo-Maid-Team,the villain and main detective in Blood+,the dread headed guy at the end of Blackcat, the two twin brothers from Ga kei Zero, and it was way more black characters in HunterXHunter if you watch the remaining 30 OVA that was english sub
When major miles from fmab isn't mentioned it sort of disappoints me because he's such an underrated character. He's not just an amazing black character, but such an amazing character overall. I love how chill and in control he seems all the time. I like his shades and hairstyle as well as his interactions with scar, who is another incredible character to add. Everything about him is cool
Can't forget Olivia from Baki The Grappler. That's the most badass black anime character in my opinion. Its ironic that anime and manga have more black characters than Western comics..
+Crazy black guy with guns 2 +Death Dealing +Miguel Santillan Usopp is actually African. Just *light* skinned. And that's because he's technically Pinocchio. But last I checked, you don't need to be dark to be black.
I'm trying to a manga myself, I'm planning to have at least 10 black people in it, 3 of them being main characters, the total cast would be about 40 people. How's that?
Huge fan of Afro Anime characters, just so much beautiful art integrated into anime. Afro Samurai, Samurai Champloo (Hip-Hop based), Boondocks (Influenced by Anime).
From the Japanese point of view, Yoruichi is about as much a person who tans excessively. And the Japanese genre of "Kurogyaru," women who excessively tanned and treated it as a fashion statement, is a remnant of that genre. The character Yoruichi was created by applying this to the appearance of a white person, and many Japanese think so. This would be the opinion of Japanese creators. When Japanese creators describe a real black person, it is with dreads or a similar hairstyle, and slightly wider lips, a thick nose, and dark skin. They don't judge a black person by his/her black skin alone, but when it is combined with the above-mentioned appearance characteristics, he/she becomes a black person. In other words, we recognize a person as black when all of the above are present, and Yoruichi is not one of them. Of course, Tousen is depicted in such a way that he can be judged as black.
