Yup! When people are complaining about "historical accuracy" when it comes to the skintone of elves, dwarves, hobbits and mermaids....... you know their problem is nothing to do with actual history. All "historical drama" is essentially fantasy especially if the source is fiction, and IMO there is zero justification for excluding an entire group of actors from genre roles based solely on their skintone.

Agreed. A common complaint these days "Why are Romans/vikings/greeks black...it's not historical!" If we're going for we should be asking why are they always talking with British accents? People hate having their biases questioned though. 😊

I think it is because they wrongfully associate Nightingale with the organization that rejected Seacole because of her race. It is true that the organization has discriminated against Seacole, it isn't Nightingale's fault that her peers are jerks.

Actually, I'm a retired history teacher in English schools - Mary Seacole is remembered for the work she did in looking after soldiers in the Crimean War - there is a statue of her outside St Thomas's hospital in London, commemorating her contribution to that cause. And her story is part of the Key Stage 2 History National Curriculum in England - all children learn about her at the same time as they learn about Florence Nightingale. However, Florence Nightingale is not only remembered for her work at the hospital in Scutari - she was a lifelong campaigner in the realm of public health and sanitation. Apart from founding the first professional nursing schools, she also produced intricate statistical reports for a number of government committees that she sat on, which resulted in major public health policies for the whole country - this was a major achievement for a woman in those misogynistic times, when women weren't even allowed to vote, never mind be a part of government. I didn't know Florence Nightingale, obviously, and can't comment whether she was racist or not, but Mary Seacole does nothing but praise her in her autobiography, which she wrote a few years after her return from the Crimea. She talks about the help, material and financial she gave her on her journey in the Crimea.
