So much to mention, I did enjoy very much the black Barbie documentary. I just had to see the original queen black Barbie have her time in the spotlight!! Picture this……….. it was Christmas morning 1979 and lil 10 year old Janet’s Planet coming down the stairs to find what Santa left for her. 😊 as I’m scoping out the wrapped presents I spy two wrapped “Barbie shaped” boxes under the tree. 🌲 As I’m unwrapping the first box I see a glamorous red sparkly dress and black Barbie is in it. Then getting started on the second box I see a bronze shiny jump suit only to reveal golden dreams Christie.🎉🎉 I’ll never forget that Christmas. 🎅 I absolutely adore the way you have your black Barbie dressed she’s adorable!!!!!!

Jul, I love you, this video and all your reminiscences (literally LOLed when you said you were a “Jezebel” in Catholic school). 😄 You ARE a Black Barbie! I saw the BB documentary a couple weeks ago and really liked it, with two quibbles: 1) the filmmaker only highlighted a few Barbies of color, which made it seem like there was only one Black Barbie per decade (when almost every blonde Barbie line from the 1970s on had a Black Barbie/Christie version) and 2) where was Black Ken/Brad/Curtis/Stephen? Forgotten, as always…😂

My understanding of why they didn’t really highlight those Barbie’s was because the point of the movie was “Black Barbie” so although we did have Christie lol along with some others, she was the side kick for all that time until we got “Black Barbie” and even she kind of faded/ wasn’t marketed that well ..we didn’t get another official “Black Barbie” until Brooklyn which to me personally is like cool! A big step !!! But they still get called Brooklyn/Malibu 😂😂 which almost deters from the fact that Barbie is now black & white simultaneously at the same time 🩷 it’s something I wanted to talk about because HOW COULD I FORGET BARBIE (BROOKLYN) in my FAV Black Barbie line up the OFFICIAL BLACK BARBIE👑😭 I was like dangggggg!!! After I realized !!! But yes they never give Ken’s any credit I even said that about myself 😂 in there smh! The Curtis, Stephen, Brad, Black Ken should have been highlighted as well! I agree!!! ⭐️
@@exoticdreamdolls I love Brooklyn too (especially the 65th Anniversary gown version.) and she deserves an entire Jul video! 😊 But what I meant was that during the 80s and 90s all the white Barbie main dolls had a black (and sometimes Latina/Teresa) version. Like the black “Day to Night” Barbie in 1984 was still called “Barbie,” not Christie. The doc made it seem like the 1980 version was the only time that happened. I think that’s because the filmmaker admitted that she wasn’t really a doll person. She should have called one of us, lol! 😄

Por cierto, aquí en Mexico somos una pequeña comunidad de coleccionistas que nos encontramos en diferentes mercados de pulgas en busca de tesoros Barbie, y recuerdo en una ocasión cuando vaciaron en un stand de juguetes una caja y vimos cuando ¨botó¨ Shani, nos lanzamos por ella como si se tratara de un ramo de novia 😅, yo la gané😎. I have an original 1969 boxed Julia (her hair is somehow still dark brown), the first Black “Barbie” and the first Black “Ken” from 1982. I also have that Repro Francie and the Anniversary Christie. But now I want your Ghanian Barbie, your My First Barbie, your Avon Barbie, Shani and S.I.S. Barbies…okay, I want them ALL! 😄 And your mini-Jul is 🔥🔥!

I'm the only collector of black dolls here in northern Ireland I've looked on RU-vid but there doesn't seem to be anyone here that does I'm white born and bred in northern Ireland my inspiration for collecting black dolls came through black music mostly gospel , Motown, soul, and reggae the rhythms of the Caribbean , I was gifted my first black doll at four years old mum took care of her in the 👂 years and back in my childhood years it was taboo for a little boy to play with dolls , my older cousin bought me the doll she said to my mum i couldn't keep my eyes off the doll she pretended she was buying the doll for herself but when we got back to mums she had me the doll and said to me shes yours mum kept her in her room as she didn't want my two older brothers teasing me sometimes children can be cruel , mum named the doll rosetta after a black gospel singer sister rosetta thorp the doll is still in great condtion thats because mum would wash her silky curly hair in fabric conditioner and combed her hair with afro pick which came with the doll the doll had ethnic correct features right down to afro curly hair since then I've a great number of black dolls and other vintage antque white and black dolls strangely enough here in ireland through the years most of shops who sold toys would regurly stock black dolls even more so now as more black people live and work here some of the black ladies that befriended me will go doll searching we always make sure to br put the black dolls on full view in stores because some people think they can't find black dolls here in ireland but if your a collector you will be aware of where to buy black and dolls , now I customize dolls braid thier hair in minute braids curl thier hair make clothes make up imagery girl groups like motown soul and gospel singers lawers doctors and high ranking professionals

Just listening to the history of black dolls and dolls in general., makes me want to keep collecting as many as possible of all colors because I don’t see color and I don’t want my daughter to see color. Thank you for this video history highlight🤗

I grew up in the early 60’s. Definitely aware of segregation, but didn’t understand. I had the Christie doll, and Julia from TV. Also a Brad doll, & a Fran & Nan Tutti doll. So I wasn’t raised to be prejudiced. I played with all the dolls. Equality still has a ways to go in a lot of areas.
1966 is only a patent date, not the date the individual doll was produced. The year of production is usually on the base of head, sometimes inside the rim.
What I want, is for Asian, Black or Latina Barbie to get the pink outfit more often. It's almost always white Barbie who got the pretty pink outfit. I don't want to buy multiple dolls to get the one outfit and doll set that I want. I realize many Asian cultures love red, but please god, give Asian Barbie pink instead of red or yellow! 😤 I hope we get to an age soon where children can have a diverse collection of dolls to play with and it's normal. No one thinks twice. A white girl can play with black and Latina dolls, little boys can play with dolls, dolls with all kinds of jobs and outfits and body types. I think it's sad when adults try to tell children which toys they can and can't play with. I agree that progress should be slow and steady. It's like trying to loose weight really fast. You just end up rebounding. It's better to make steady progress that lasts. Super sad the Black Barbie tribute by Stacey was only an auction doll. Should have been a regular release. Love how you redressed first Barbie with the hair rollers and retro pink outfit. I really love the early 90's playline dolls so much. I might need to get an Asha or Shani to redress in pastels. Also, sir, 35 is NOT old. You are just a wee lad. 😭 Don't reach your thirties thinking you've gone over the hill!

I don’t have a vintage black Barbie i am on the lookout for a 60s Christie. All of my black Barbies are current ones. Mainly fashionistas and Looks dolls. I like that mine have different face molds, skintones and hair textures.

Mattel is moving too slow and the black guy with the blad head who works for Mattel was giving me he just wanted to keep his job. Dude it’s 2024 Black Barbie should have her own show by now, he kept saying it’s a process and I’m like dude stop playing in our faces, you don’t care. Then he’s going to say my daughter have all the races of the dolls so she can see every race, whats wrong with her just having all black dolls? Just another way to make white people at his job feel comfortable because he can’t be real and say what he wanted to say. Mattel just want to spoon feed us because they don’t want to lost their core audience who is white. If they do too much for the blacks consumers, then their whites customers are going to be up in arms. He can’t be real because he might lose that job at Mattel. The black guy with the locks said dismantled the whole white supremacy system! I like that message better!
