Black Bear VS 44 Magnum (First Time Bear Hunt)

It is my turn to get into the stand and self film my bear hunt. I chose to use a Taurus revolver in .44 Magnum with 240 grain Winchester solid point bullets. I've wanted to hunt bear for along time since a failed season in 2011. This year with the help of some friends my season became a reality. I've wanted to take a bear with a 44 magnum revolver and this year that became a reality too. Northwest MN is a over the counter license purchase with no need for a draw, so I bought a last minute tag and hit the woods for some bear hunting 2020. Join me for this adventure in the big woods of Northwest MN and see what a 44 magnum vs a black bear. If you enjoy the After 5 Outdoors channel, please subscribe, its what keeps our channel growing. The more we grow the more outdoor content we will be bringing to you!

G.k. This was an excellent video. It reminds me of my bear hunts in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I shot bears with a a Ruger .338 using 250 grain Nosler Partitions. All shots became one shot kills on 200- 350 pound bears. I took Elmer Keith's advice and used the .338 Win Mag. So I could end my hunt whenI pulled the trigger. I also carried S&W M29 .44mag as a backup. Yes,this video brings back memories. I would have preferred to have no music,except at the very end. I loved the scenery, the sound of the leaves being rustled by the wind, and the quiet before heart pounding excitement. Excitement tempered with a little sadness for the animal. Then begins the work of dragging, field dressing and butchering until 2-3 A.M. Bear rugs and mounts are beautiful and the steaks, chops, and ground meat are delicious. Please do more videos.

I was the "gun back up" for a guy that wanted to shoot a grizzly with a bow and arrow. He shot the bear, got both lungs but missed the heart. I was about 75 yards away with my 30.06 aimong at the bear as he came walking up to me. He got about 15 feet from me. I didn't shoot because it was an archery tag, but if he would have come any closer... I could see his nostrils flaring as he tried to smell me. I wondered why he couldnt hear my heart pounding. The bear turned around and lay down, i waited several minutes before throwing a rock to see if he was dead.

“Boy, that was crazy.” Bear’s head is in a bait bucket, hunter is up a tree. I upvoted this video just because it’s a hunting video, but the bait thing isn’t my thing. We hunt bears by putting on drives in very steep, rough terrain, which is pure fair chase.
@After5Outdoors
@After5Outdoors 2 года назад
Our country is heavily wooded, driving bears wouldn't be very productive. Most times your visibility is limited to a few feet because our brush is so thick. If I lived in an area where spot and stalk was possible, I would be all over it.

I enjoyed your video. I just couldn't take an animal over bait. Where I live you can't use bait. I'm also partial to hunting on the ground, and not in a tree stand. Good job though. How much did he weigh?
@After5Outdoors
@After5Outdoors 3 года назад
Well I do respect your opinion about hunting over bait. I do want to say, in this area where I live, taking a bear without the use of bait would be virtually impossible. Our woods are very thick and it is uncommon to see a bear in an open area. We have an abnormally high bear population here as well. It is to the point where I receive numerous nuisance bear complaints each year, there is a large number of bear that are shot by landowners since the bears have grown accustom to being in peoples yards. Most people have the stigma that bears are not good table fare, so from the time in which they are shot to the time that someone is willing to process the bear, usually the meat is not salvageable, and also it is usually in the late spring, early summer. Which shortens even further the length of time to get the meat processed, as you want to get the hide off as quickly as possible. I would like to hunt from the ground also and I may do so next year. But this year we had minimal time to clear brush, and also strangely enough a high amount of wasp and hornets nests near our bait sights. Being allergic to bees, I made the decision to defer trying to prep my sight for ground hunting. I do want to hunt on the ground. My bear weighed in about 200 lbs. So for NW Minnesota he was about average. Our large bears went nocturnal as so many large bears do. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and also the fact that you commented and did so in a classy matter stating your opinion. I'm glad to say that we can agree to disagree. Again thank you so much for watching and I hope that you will be a repeat viewer to the channel. Take Care and have a great day!

i mean, let’s be real. if you want a guarantee of survival after being charged by an injured 200lb black bear, you might be better off with a jet pack or an armored personnell carrier or something. that bear could have climbed that tree or shaken him down like a pine cone if it felt like it. the best way to survive a bear charge is not to be charged by a bear, i think. i hear people talking about this at the range or at gun stores and it’s like, bro if you are within charging distance of any wild bear and spook it into charging you, you have already made at least a dozen easily avoided mistakes and you are now thoroughly fubar. if the bear charges, no handgun is likely to help you, even with a small black bear only weighing a few hundred pounds. on that note, my one “close encounter” with a wild bear was in glacier national park, flyfishing up by one of the lakes. my fishing partner pointed at a grizzly making his way down from a ridge directly toward where we were fishing. and we both exited the river quite promptly, leaving our leaders and fish right where they were and headed up the other bank and hillside to get upwind and far away enough to be more of a curiosity than a threat. that grizz could have run up that hillside in seconds if it wanted to, but thankfully, he was happily distracted by the nice presents we left him and chose to plop down right there by the river and enjoy a free lunch. it was still terrifying to sit a few hundred yards away, trying to be still and quiet and “one with the grass”. iirc, he even took a leisurely siesta after his lunch, while my panicked fishing partner kept looking over at me like, wtf is happening. lol.

i came to this video after watching your review of the Taurus 44 6.5”. i normally carry 45acp or 10mm or my own 45 “super” handloads in case of large predators. thing is, i know even my 10mm is unlikely to ethically dispatch a black bear or other large game in the pacific northwest. so i’ve been looking at this samehandgun - the taurus 44. i have some questions for you about the pistol but i’ll go back to your review video and ask there. thanks again for this video. it is enlightening to actually see how effective that 44 magnum load was. can i ask, were you shooting 300gr? i’ll go back and rewatch cuz i think you said it at the beginning. i would love to see a follow up video, have you continued to use this same 44? How did it do? are you using a scope now or other optic?
@After5Outdoors
@After5Outdoors Год назад
Still iron sights. I like the more non technical way of hunting with it. I used this 44 to take a few whitetails also, one being at 38 yards. I hunted bear in 2021 but was not able to have one come in during the daylight hours. I have not hunted bears since due to how time consuming it gets to be running baits and also the price of baiting. I use 240 gr Winchester jacketed soft points. I've also wanted to move up to the Smith and Wesson Pro Hunter revolver, but getting my hands on one has been difficult, to say the least. But in all honesty, the Taurus M44 has been a good tool for me in the woods.

That was an awesome Black Bear Handgun Hunt, excellent videography it was like being there along with you! Congratulations. Handgun Hunting is the way to go! Really like the big Birch Trees, nice terrain! Yes I can see where tall water resistant boots are definitely a need to wear. Did you use a Taurus Raging Bull 44 Magnum revolver? As well as the Winchester White Box 240 grain Soft Point RFN Bullets? How many pounds was the Bear as well as how tall Bi Pedal standing up was the Bear? Here is a suggestion for you, to please consider an even more challenging Black Bear Handgun Hunt. A future Black Bear Handgun Hunt, using my invention of specialty Universal Bullets in a cap&ball percussion revolver. Such as in either a Ruger Old Army, Remington, Rodgers&Spencer, 1860 Colt Army or Walker or 3rd Model Dragoon revolver. I can provide you with the Universal Bullets. I have successfully have hunted and harvested Wild Boar with the use of my Universal Bullets in percussion cap&ball revolvers. As per such I am sure that if I can quickly put down a Wild Boar with a good stout powder like Triple Seven 3F either my 220/240 or 255 grain Universal Bullets in a percussion revolver, they will be enough to successfully quickly take a good sized Black Bear. If feasible I'd also be willing to hunt along side with you. As I also am going out here in NYS, PA, Vermont, NH and Maine for a Black Bear. If your interested , please contact me at kaido93@hotmail.com. Best Wishes and Safe Journeys.

whoa... in the mid-atlantic, big game season starts late november with modern firearms - temperatures above 40F are rare even for a mid-afternoon high. Normal temps for big game hunting in the mid-atlantic region are 20-34 degree HIGH and when you walk into the woods in the dark, sub-teens temperatures are the norm.
