I agree with the statement of “If you want an animal that you’re going to see and know it’s alive. Don’t get a trapdoor spider.” The same thing should be applied to hermit crabs too. If you want an animal that you can see and know it’s alive and isn’t burrowed underground 90% of the time for molting, and want an animal you can hold and form a relationship with, don’t get hermit crabs. A lot of people of in the hermit crab community have a “hands off” approach. They want people to leave them alone. Even people who are new to owning crabs have been told by experienced crabbers that crabs are hands off. They don’t want people to handle them or take them out of their tanks.

@@flimsyenthusiasm5769 I believe the biggest Aussie spider is the Queensland Whistling Tarantula which is from the same family as the Goliath spider found in South America (which is the biggest in the world I believe). But hunstmans here can get bigger than your palm. Yeah the Sydney funnel-web is nasty. They are recognised as a fatally venomous spider here, but on record no-one has died since the 80s from a bite. Here in Sydney we are actually encouraged to collect them (if safe to do so) and take them to the Australian Reptile Park for anti-venom collection. They are milked and then released back into the wild.

@jaschabull2365 3 года назад
@@dorabrooks76 Just curious, what makes you uncomfortable around ants?
@dorabrooks76
@dorabrooks76 3 года назад
@@jaschabull2365 It's a bit of a story. I've never liked them, but originally I just found them annoying rather than it being any discomfort or fear. However, I've always been uncomfortable with _any_ small invertebrate crawling on me- I *really* dislike the sensation. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Large inverts (giant stick insects, jungle nymphs, ect) are OK, I'm talking anything smaller than a few inches, even inverts I really like or love like spiders; my skin is just overly sensitive to the feeling of little feet moving around. Lol Then one day when I was around 15 I was helping my mom with her in-home daycare by putting a toddler to bed. I had managed to sing and rock him to sleep, and laid him down in the playpen in my parents' room. I went to close the blinds so he'd sleep better, not knowing there was a nest of carpenter ants in the window frame, hidden by the curtain. When I pulled the string to close the blinds a whole ton (probably 30-40ish) of large ants fell on my hand/arm and shoulder/chest and from there they started crawling all over me, some biting. Plus a bunch with wings flew at my face/head and got in my hair. As I mentioned, I already hated the feeling of small things crawling on me, so to have them all over me, down my shirt, and in my hair... well, it left a lasting impression! It was awful. 😵😱 I ran out of the room already stipping off my shirt to jump in the shower. I'm proud to say I did not scream- I didn't want to wake the toddler up, nor scare the older kids. I did cry, though. 😆 For years after that I was afraid of ants. Through a sort of self-led immersion therapy I've gotten to the point where I don't panic when I see one, but they still creep me out and make me shiver. Frankly, I _do_ still panic if one gets on me, though, and unexpectedly being confronted with one can startle me. If they're outside I'm usually OK, I just avoid them. I know they're tiny and can't really hurt me much (where I live, anyway), but I don't know if I'll ever be comfortable with them again...

I live in the AZ desert where camel spiders are common. They are absolutely super fast and fairly terrifying. Aggressive. They will come at you and take you down! We captured one years ago and fed it a millworm (I think that's what it's called). That spider latched onto on end of the worm and proceeded to spin - like a crocodile "death spin" and opened it up like a tin can then "sucked" it dry. I know I'm getting a lot of my terminology wrong n such, but you get the idea. Been scared of these little dudes ever since.

Love that the only deaths caused by huntsmans is from them turning up in unexpected places and causing accidents. Also you are right to fear their speed: 40 body lengths per second (cheetahs only manage 16). Huntsman bebehs are a marvellous thing to have around the house. The don't leave webs anywhere and keep down the populations of pantry moths, silverfish, flies etc.

I am 38 years old now so this is how long ago it was. I remember it so well. My second grade teacher had brought in one of them huge aluminum tubs one day and said we all are to fix up a sider habitat in the tub. We had dirt on the bottom one live plant that we planted in the tub, rocks, and sticks. We then were told to keep an eye out for spiders on the playground. That same day I discovered a rather large all black jumping spider. It kept on poking its head out of the lip of the all medal slide we had in them days. I remember screaming to the top of my lungs for the teacher. Other class mates found out and all ran to get her. I picked up a dead leaf off the ground to get it to come all the way out. But before the teacher got there the spider took off down the side. I remember jumping down (and I am scared to death of spiders) and scooped the spider up in my hand. When she got to me and found out it was in my hand she told me to run to the class room. She was happy but disappointed I touched the spider without her seeing it first. Since it was our class first spider, and I found it I got to name it. It ended up being Hairy the spider. After a month we ended up with three jumping spiders and one wicked looking spider that made its web in the form of a funnel. I was amazed that none of the spider ever tried to escape and they could very easy if they wanted. Every morning the first thing we did was we had to go outside and find bugs for it to eat, and empty the moth trap by the light outside to feed them. Thinking back to them days I now realize how amazing it was. We had to draw pictures of the spiders, look in books to try and figure out what kind they were, track their feeds and what bugs they liked the best, and learned all about spiders. Now being in elementary we had our class but we had a science class that we would go to once a week. So this was something my normal teacher was not obligated to teach. It was just the teachers love for spiders the reason she did this. I am still scared of spiders today but not near as much as I was. After about two months we came in to an egg sack. After they hatched we let all the spiders go. It was a very sad day in a second grade class in Missouri. Some kids even cried when we all watched them crawl into the school garden area. Just thought I would share that story with you all. Anyone else here ever do something like this in school?

Australian here and researching getting my first tarantula. In terms of huntsmans we have them everywhere. I've had them in the house, the car, the toilet, the verandah, the shed etc.. I reached into my mail box a few months back and pulled the mail out with one on my hand (the mail went flying everywhere). I'm almost 48 and lived my whole life here but don't think I'll ever get used to them. I know they're harmless, but it's just their massive size and speed. However I'm not bothered at the idea of a pet tarantula. I love the ancient old world aspect of the Aussie ones and they have a unique and fascinating beauty about them even though they are also quite intimidating.

The camel spiders look like scorpions without their tail segments. They are one of the scorpion-spider hybrids of the arachnid family.

Camel spiders are super cool, trapdoors also kinda cool but if you got them it's kinda like that scene from Pirates of the Caribbean "I got a jar of dirt!"

I had a GBB go skittering across my hand when I rehomed it. I was so scared of losing it or hurting it! Thankfully my Grammostola Pulchripes was a good girl and strolled into her new enclosure for me.

Funny story, I’m not scared of insects and arachnids but this scared the living crap out of me! I was going to give my dog a bath, I put him in the bathtub without looking, when I looked in there I saw a camel/sun spider! I panicked a bit and realized what is was. I told my mom about it but when she saw it she panicked, it was pretty funny.

I find it fascinating that Tarantula Kat loves these different arachnids to point of keeping of keeping lots of them yet at same time seems genuinely as terrified of them as your average arachnid phobic woman ( 😱 arghhh oh noooo !! ) lol 😂 that's definition of brave! Only recently started seeing your videos love them ❤ good job x

There was false information going around that they would chew through the skin of soldiers and eat down to the muscle. Apparently they’re mostly docile and reclusive pretty interesting arachnids
