There is a bird near my house that I've never seen before. Its body is bluish/black (brownish colored wings), has a small crest and sounds like a northern cardinal.
I've never seen a bird like this in North Alabama, where I live. If anyone knows what the name of this bird is, please leave the information in the comment section. Thank you.

I say Blue Grosbeak too. They are related to cardinals.

I'll bet that's it! But I can't remember ever seeing a bird like this before. Five years ago, a scissor-tail flycatcher showed up on the fence in my back yard and was the first time I had ever seen one of those as well- in north Alabama. (They are usually from Texas - Oklahoma) Thank you for your reply!

You are of course correct. I am at a loss to explain why in all my 64 years of life (most of which was spent out of doors), I never noticed one of these beautiful little birds. I suppose the sound was so close to a cardinal, I assumed that was what I was hearing. Also, with its small size and shy nature, they're not exactly going to "get in your way". Thanks for responding.

I have the same thing happening at my house. Same type of bird was at my back door perched and trying his best to get in. I approached the door he flew off. I turned around and one minute later he was back. Then next day had a female with him and over a five day span there are seven birds like him in my yard. They come every morning around 8:00 and the one that originally came to the back door is the only one that comes close. The other stay back.

I found the reason this couple were so active was they were teaching their fledgling(s) to fly and it was concealed in the tall grasses below them. :)

Looks slightly like a desert cardinal, except for the beak, however I remember while I was looking up desert cardinals that there was yet another type of cardinal that was closer to the one in the video having a silverish beak. I wish I could remember the name of that type, not just to see if it could be the type of bird in this video but also just for personal reasons as I love cardinals. However, as someone who loves cardinals (and I know this is gonna sound crazy) the bird in the video seems to have the mannerisms of cardinals, just the way it turns around and hops in the tree, so I don’t believe it’s a blue grosbeak but I could be wrong.

I guess all of you are close to the type of this bird and I searched all of the names that you just said (black cardinal, blue grosbeak, phainopela, scissor-tail flycatcher and desert cardinal). I think that the bird's type is black cardinal or phainopela. Also, hear the sounds of the bird to check. I hope my answer is correct. In addition, I suggest that you continue videoing different types of birds😆😊

I looked the Phainopepla up on Google and you're right, they are real similar. However, the Phainopepla's habbitat is in the South West US and I live in Alabama. Also, the song is different. The Phainopepla's song can be heard here: www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/phainopepla/id Thank you!

ToriGirlytar I discovered it's a "Blue grosbeak". I've never seen one before (to my knowledge), and never seen one since. I guess they're pretty rare here in north Alabama...?
