In the heart of Black Dragon Wash, nestled within the San Rafael Swell, lies an enigmatic red pictograph panel, accompanied by petroglyphs, etched into the canyon walls. Protected within a fenced area, visitors can behold a series of elongated human and animal-like pictographs attributed to the ancient Barrier Canyon culture. Adjacent to these, stylistically distinct Fremont petroglyphs add to the site's allure. Unfortunately, unaware of the harm, past visitors outlined these delicate images with chalk, inadvertently damaging the precious rock art. A conglomeration of figures forms a dragon-like image among these outlines, lending the canyon its evocative name.
Hikers can embark on a brief journey through the wash and into the San Rafael reef to reach the panel, relishing in the surrounding beauty. Nearby canyons and the wash itself offer further hiking and photography prospects. However, access to the panel demands a sturdy, high-clearance vehicle, as the sandy road poses challenges. Caution is advised; only those well-versed in desert travel and mindful of changing weather conditions should venture into this mesmerizing landscape. #petroglyphs #rockart #petroglyph #nativeamerican #pictographs #nature #art #travel #utah #archaeology #prehistoricrockart #wanderlust #ancient #desert #hiking #emerycountyutah #videography #utahphotographer #photographer #photography #sanpetetrailhunter #utphotographer #history #videographer #roadtrip #hike #offroad #backcountry #camping #campinglife #sanpetetrailhunter #utvideographer #utahvideographer #utahcinematographer
