Madam C. J. Walker was the first female millionaire of any race in America. She made her fortune thanks to her homemade line of hair care products for African American women. Born Sarah Breedlove to parents who had been slaves, Walker was inspired to create her hair products after an experience with her own hair loss, which led to the creation of the “Walker System” of hair care. A talented entrepreneur with a knack for self-promotion, Walker built a business empire by first selling products directly to black women then she elevated her business savvy to new levels by employing “beauty culturalists” to hand-sell her hair-care system. The self-made millionaire used her fortune as a political activist and social advocate while contributing to the NAACP, YMCA, institutions of higher learning, and other notable charities.

Madam CJ Walker is the reason females from my school days, family, and in adulthood are taking pride and enhancing their outer beauty. She is indeed the pioneer of black beauty. Kudos to her. Brilliant.

@@BlackExcellist Yes! That's right- Annie Malone was the first "self-made" (loosely defined) female millionaire. There was at least 1 before them, but she earned her dollars through investments on Wall Street.

Madame Walker learned from QUEEN Annie Malone and stepped her game up. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE BETTER THAN THE TEACHER ✊🏿

Also learned of millionaress Mary Ellen Pleasant- financier, died before Walker or Malone also reached success [aka Mammy Pleasant]- would love to hear more about her: 2]The press also called her "Mammy" Pleasant but she did not approve: "I don't like to be called mammy by everybody. Put. that. down. I am not mammy to everybody in California. I received a letter from a pastor in Sacramento. It was addressed to Mammy Pleasant. I wrote back to him on his own paper that my name was Mrs. Mary E. Pleasant. I wouldn't waste any of my paper on him." (Wikipedia)

All respect to the ancestor Madame CJ Walker, but her story is the shining example as to why you got to leave an heir of some sort. Someone that can tell YOUR story and keep it alive when you leave this place. Anne Malone had been doing this in St. Louis before her, was in business well after Madam Walker passed, and is still highly revered in St. Louis to this day. Actually she got her whole door to door model AND hair school from Anne Malone because she did it first.

I cried a lot when I watched the movies with Octavia Spencer. Madam C J Walker's words touched my heart... ❤❤❤❤. Facing many hard things and people, she never stopped with anger, but she was able to see new and greater opportunities, loving God and all people ❤❤❤❤. Ohhhhh her work is still alive!

come on guys let's get it right!! "ANNIE MALONE" is the first self made black millionaire who employed and taught M Walker. She should have been received her credit and respect before Walker. It's ashame that Annie Malone doesn't get her respect and credit!!!!!!
@JMac7395
@JMac7395 3 года назад
Actually Mary Ellen Pleasant is the 1st Black self-made millionaire. Annie Malone is the 2nd. Walker was the 3rd. But Walker was more popular than the first two women. That's probably why the Guinness World Record people focused only on her

YoungGeezer_ you will not believe how many Black hair care products are actually out there. I’m a Licensed Cosmetologist and I go to hair shows. Inflúance is one of them. They actually have their own hair shows in Virginia Beach, VA, specifically only for their products. Bronner Brothers usually have their hair shows in February and August every year in Atlanta, GA and they allow other black hair lines to promote their products. My mentor owns Besser Hair Care and she’s based out in Dayton, Ohio. Nairobi, Congo Professional and Kerafena are out in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. They also own Sheen Magazine. I can continue to go on and on and on.

I think the bigger problem is that too many Black business owners sell their businesses/corporations after a few years. Which puts a stop to any generational wealth. Black people have been conditioned to think about the almighty dollar only & not what their children & grandchildren could possibly inherit. Hence why we end up going to Asian & White businesses for Black hair products in the later years.

Walker's only child A'Lelia Walker never had children of her own even though she married 3 times. However A'Lelia did adopt a teenage girl name Fairy Mae Bryant. Fairy May inherited the estate & company after A'Lelia died. After Fairy Mae died her daughter A'Lelia Mae Perry Bundles took over the company & kept the business running until the 1970s. In 2013 CJ Walker Enterprise was bought out by Sundial Brand, the company that owns Shea Moisture products. So allegedly some of the Walker products are still sold today in select stores, specifically Sephora.
