so, i am white and i grew up in an integrated church and i spent a lot of my youth at black friends houses. we never had a bottle of lotion in our house, Ever. but my black friends had bottles of lotion in every room of their houses as well as their vehicles and purses. and, i can promise you that at some point in my childhood i complained about having itchy skin and one of my parents said "get a clean towel." Bill Burr is the GOAT.

I think this bit from Bill Burr is the reason why I started using lotion many years ago. My skin is dry as fuck, if I don't lotion up it gets dry and ashy.

😅 lotion for me, my immediate family, and every distant relative I've ever had meant one of 2 things. You are talking about sunscreen/tan lotion or calamine lotion for getting stung by a bee or poison ivy.

Patrice O'Neal is the one (or at least one) of the people who should be thanked for helping Bill's mind get compatible with black thinking. They used to hang out together, and once or twice I heard Patrice say, "don't say that", and Bill looked up to him and got his cues on certain situations. And great credit to Patrice for seeing the potential and developing it. That takes a man with a lot of heart. Patrice was like a father to many good comedians.

My best friend in high school, college and college roommate were all black. They taught me so much about black culture and loved quizzing me on hip hop at first. I remember going to the club back in ‘97, there were 7 of us and one was the hottest Hispanic chick I’ve ever seen irl. She worked the front desk at the hotel Iseveral of us worked at during college. I kid you not the club was packed and I was the only white person in the place, besides the vendors probably ever. But once I got a few shots and on the dance floor with hottie I got mad love. It was one of the best nights of my life and no I didn’t hook up with hottie I was happily friend zoned. Yep she was that hot! I even got a “go white boy!” chant when she was grinding on me. Point is, what makes us similar is our interests, values and beliefs way more than skin color. Don’t judge because if you give everyone a chance people can surprise you.

Two comedians I've been watching lately is Ian Bagg and Dale Quinn.

I remember when I was in the military I was around more Black people than I had ever been around in my life. I asked them questions about lying in the sun. I asked man I said do you burn and he laughed. He thought it was funny I said well how do you see he says well our skin changes a different color I said what color does it says kind of a purple color he says you can’t really see it right away unless you get close I said well I’ve never been that close to a black person I guess. But I learned a lot of things in there by asking questions. And they weren’t offended. They knew I was legitimately interested in finding out More about their race. Learned a lot more since I’ve got older because I’ve watched these comedians and they described things that I didn’t even know about like Bill Burr talking about. What’s the lotion. I never thought about it. I knew that special products on their hair especially the girls and I knew guys couldn’t shave their face without getting bumps all over them because the guys in the army were allowed to grow their beers if they went to the medical department and got a clearance, because every time they shave their face would just break out in huge sores. If you don’t grow up with Black people or around Black people, you don’t know anything about them. The era I grew up in when I was young very young was before segregation segregation started after I got into elementary school. When I was in the second grade, there was a little black girl that I used to go out every day after school because I knew she rode the bus and I run out there and give her a hug and try to kiss her. I thought she was beautiful. I’ll bet that the teachers there thought there was something wrong with me. And I’m sure that the other kids got there something wrong with me too. The older ones. I was only in the second grade. When I think about things from ages ago, it just makes me feel old.

I don't know how much people are aware of, these days, but it used to be known that back in the day, Bill was talking with some of his fellow comics and the black comics were talking about how black crowds are SO much tougher to win over than white crowds, which is true, as far as I know. Bill took it as a challenge to craft material that would appeal not just to a wide variety of audiences, but occasionally to specific audiences. Bill didn't get to be so real by accident, he made it happen.

Funny story: Im white and I didnt know about lotion until I dated a black woman. We never had it in the house growing up. Occasionally, my Dad put vaseline or tallow on his hands and feet. I try my best to use it like I should but it always makes me sweat and then I feel slick and slippery and I just cant stand that feeling. Cheap or expensive stuff, doesnt matter. Odd since I sweat all day at work and that doesnt bug me a bit. That, and I just dont like to smell like anything at all. My compromise is to use Vitamin A&D right out of the shower, but very lightly. After a year of doing that, my skin looks 10 years younger.
