Our "Black History Month in Freeport" series begins with Moxey Rigby. In 1959, Freeporter Moxey Rigby became the first African American judge to hold office in Nassau County. Born in the Bahamas, Judge Rigby was inspired to become an attorney as a child.
Judge Rigby was vice-chairman of the Freeport Housing Authority, an agency which he helped to create, and was also a member of numerous public organizations.
