Atholl Edwin Seymore Lewis, known by “TT” or "TT Lewis".
TT Lewis was a white Barbadian, and you may wonder about his place in Black history month. TT ran for the House of Assembly as an independent in 1942, he never became a minister but made a huge impact. He had two major agendas, which he fought with all his might, one was free secondary education. TT should be applauded for his agitation which would have ultimately resulted in free education. Free education has had a significant impact on the lives of black people in this country.
Sir James Tudor, who became the second Minister of Education in this country, under the DLP Government in 1961 said the following:
“Lewis was literally the first politician in Barbados ever to conceive how free secondary education could be brought about … Really, TT must take all the credit”.
In 1954 Mr. Luther Thorne was appointed the first Minister of Education under a BLP Government.
