BLACK HORSE REGIMENT: 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment BEST COMBAT UNIT in Vietnam 1/3

America's most capable and successful combat unit in Vietnam was the 11th Armored Cavalry (ACR) "Black Horse" Regiment--bar none. Watch this amazing documentary and learn what RIGHT LOOKS LIKE. Light mechanized M113 Gavins with armored cavalry assault vehicle (ACAV aka female machine gun light tank) gunshield kits
www.combatreform.org/m113comba...
can roam cross-country at-will to maneuver where needed to dominate fluid, non-linear battlefield (NLB) situations:
www.geocities.com/wheelsvstracks
Even Vietnam's closed terrain couldn't stop 11th ACR ground and air cavalry maneuver.
The 11th ACR was a self-contained cavalry formation (today it's the OPFOR at Fort Irwin, NTC but has deployed to combat in Iraq) with its own M48 Patton medium and M551 Sheridan light tanks backed by M109 105mm and 155mm self-propelled howitzers (SPHs). It even had its own mini-Air Force of a "ThunderHorse" air cavalry troop with UH-1 Huey helicopter gunships that could also insert/extract aeroscouts.
The first thing the Black Horse Regiment did was to invite the VC/NVA to try to ambush them on their main supply route (MSR) which when they flanked them by cross-country maneuver resulted in the enemy being wiped out; restoring civilian use of linear roads.
NONE OF THIS TRACKED COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS CAN BE DONE IN STRYKER OR HUMVEE WHEELED TRUCKS. The VC/NVA would kick our asses today if we tried to fight them in our current BS wheeled trucks.
RU-vid user sonofrattler writes:
"Anyone interested in The Blackhorse should read Brig. Gen. J.C. 'Doc' Bahnsen's book 'American Warrior'. It is a splendid account of the valiant fighting men that served in the 118th AHC during Doc's 1st tour and a better story of The Blackhorse's efforts during Doc's 2nd tour"
Here's an U.S. Army Command & General Staff College School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) report by Infantry officer, Major William Sutey on the need for cross-country MOBILITY (XCM) from M113 Gavin light tracked tanks to improve LIGHT INFANTRY FORCE mobility, protection and firepower. READ IT.

My dad was a part of this unit detached to The 409 RRD. He never talked about but it's amazing it came back alive But he passed away in 2009 from agent Orange. it's cool that I get to see a part of his history that he never talked about. he held a lot of resentment towards the people when he got home with how they treated him. It makes me mad sometimes when People refuse to see what he did He was part of the ASA

My grampa was there, E troop but he never got his purple heart because the Army denied him ever being there. Because they were not supposed to put soldiers there I guess.

I was in the 11th ACR when it was in Germany 1992-94. A great history, but someone should tell that announcer guy in the video that we lost the war in Vietnam.

I was in flight operations for 12th Combat Aviation Group. We had 7 Battalions in group. All Assault Helicopter Battalions, except for 7th Squadron, of 11th Armored Cav. Detached to us. Our mission area was 3 Corps. Saigon #1 priority for protection. I never had contact with this outfit. Just sent messages out to them. They did not like being assigned to Aviation protection. Their purpose was to stamp out fires, as opposed to direct assault. I had two friends drafted when I was. They ended up in 11th ACR. One was killed on a tank (hit in chest with RPG riding on top), and the other had messed up brain from riding around on APC. (drugs) 3 Squadrons listed in Vietnam for 11th ACR history from my brief research. 7th is not one of them. But then, I had to appeal to VA for care 3 times, even though being IN Vietnam for 14 months. Rocketed, mortared, shot at, and some sailor 100 miles off shore gets immediate care, and I have to appeal. Had to have SECRET security clearance to be a cook in 12th Group as example. I can see where 7th Squadron of 11th Cav might not exist in normal Army records. We had missions into Cambodia, Laos which do not exist according to records.

I loved watching this stuff as a kid in the 60's but as an adult meeting Vietnam vets it gave me a completely different view. Many of the guys I knew were one step away from suicide, held together by thumb tacks and bailing wire. I don't understand how we can do something as a country and then ignore the consequences and act like it didn't happen.

It's a great video for what it's trying to do. I couldn't help but be reminded of the announcer in the movie Starship Troopers. And I agree with you too. I read a book about the tunnel rats, 11th ACR members that would crawl in the tunnels that the VC had dug and blow away VC in their holes with a handgun. THAT takes ballz! Related fact: There was a height maximum to be in the 11th ACR since they were doing this tunnel rat thing. 6' 4" linebackers need not apply.
