The way my white friend explained enjoying Beyoncé’s music is: it’s not MY birthday but I’m still going to enjoy the party. You don’t get to make it about you because it’s not your day. Appreciate and enjoy.
Dang, the fact that your friend even had to clarify why it was okay to enjoy Beyonce's music just because they're white is crazy, esp. considering how many all-white sitcoms that young black kids watched and showed appreciation for when we were young. But as soon as it's something that is all black...the same people who didn't complain about all white art have something to say and others have to explain why positive black messages aren't threatening. The racial divide in the US is really something else.
KevOnStage was spot on! Beyonce just doesn't care about those white awards or accolades anymore. She just wanted to make music for her people and highlights her roots and the continent of her ancestors and she doesn't give a dang whether other communities watch her or not.
Wrong. She did it to secure got a hefty cheque. Did everyone forget that this is an interpretation of Disney's Lion King? That she just voiced a character for? Or have ppl forgot that Disney is a billon dollar empire.
sedsa097 But she only was inspired decided to do an entire visual after Lion Kings’ music director telling her the story of the original creator (a black man) of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”‘s song basically being stolen and given money but no credit. This was said in a recent interview with Tina Knowles, if you were wondering the source.
Beyonce began transitioning with Sasha Fierce and then just did her own thing with 4. It's been pure Beyonce Giselle Knowles Carter since then. Period.
sedsa097 You uninformed lame lol. She literally funded the entire film. Black is King was created because Disney never credited the original creator of one of the original Lion King songs so she took it upon herself to produce this movie
Black Is King is deep. On the surface it's pretty, fun colors and outfits and hair and dances and music. But the more you know, the more you'll get from it. The Moses storyline relates to her miscarriage and seeing that child "on the other side." There are references to Black culture that you would only get if you grew up in it. There are spiritual aspects. It's just a lot. It can either be a pretty, artsy movie for the night or someone's dissertation. I think it's bigger than just Beyoncé. AND I love that she included brown skin Asians in Brown Skin Girl. Lord knows they need representation too. Also, the way the internet disrespected Blue as a baby for being too Black with her features and hair... every time Beyoncé casts her in a project with a credited role with her natural hair, her father's features, and her growing talent, it's like the best longterm response. You don't HAVE to watch it, many won't from either disinterest or stubbornness, BUT I think it's worth at least two watches.
Black culture dates back very far. Even before the Greco-Roman age. Most schools only teach about the empire from Mesopotamia africa when talking about ancient times. Mesopotamia is the empire the Greco-Romans built up after colonizing parts of North Africa, Kemet(now known as egypt), Kush(roughly sudan today), parts of ethiopia and parts of Libya. Remember It was Melanin rich people shown on the Real hieroglyphs! Ancient African culture and artifacts predates all empires known to man! And have been pillaged by greek archaeologists. And in later times recolonized by British/Dutch/French/German! Theres alot of history people!
NOW she gives credit. Just before Lemonade she was on that "I, Beyonce, do it all with no help because I'm so great" narrative. Guess she got tired of getting called out.
“Brown Skin Girl” had me crying so hard that my soul freed up!🙌🏾🙌🏾 That song and visuals with the most amazing, influential Black Women; who had to fight the world “norm” of their idea of “beauty”....Trail Blazers in the beauty game!!! And the LOVE shared between them ❤️❤️ I could NOT stop crying. Something broke in me!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Same, I get emotional even thinking about it. It was just so beautiful. She didn’t have to do any of this at all - she’s a mega star with a lions share of power in Hollywood. But she still chose share the spotlight and aim that light on an underrepresented group, and she did so in a respectful and very well-thought out way. I’ve never felt so acknowledged and appreciated ❤️🖤🤎.
That one had me too. Especially seeing her love on Kelly because the public always treated her so bad when they were in the group and a lot of it was colorism. So that part was just amazing.
31:10 "If you ain't talking about letting me own my stuff then we ain't talking..." Kev, you don't even know how big of a confirmation you just gave me... it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
Kev and Angel are the clean, above reproach, version of work wife and work husband. They just gel so well. Their passion for their work shines through and Josh fits perfectly in that dynamic as we hear him speak and engage in the topics more than he did at the begining.
I'm Latina(Mexican) and I teared up so many times watching Black is King. I'm going to rewatch it again to see the other details I didn't see the first time. But anyways I’m obsessed with this podcast!! I love Angel!! 💗
I'm not a super fan of Beyonce but I do enjoy her music and respect her talent and work ethic. Part of what I luv about her is I remember her saying ppl always asking why she doesn't do interviews. And she said it's all in the music. That's when I began really paying more attention to her music, lyrics and imaging. Ppl talking about her, making fun of her. She just continued creating. No Twitter beefs and throwing drinks at ppl.
As a Nigerian I was so excited for this. I have to make sure I go back home to Delta State and make sure my baby boy meets my family back home on my Dad’s side.
Angel...that analogy about her and Michael sprinting up a mountain with different weight vests on...add the fact that Beyoncé is running with heels on, and a baby on her hip! Girl!! Making it as a woman is SO MUCH HARDER than it is for a man! And, not saying that women don’t have POWER...we do. Any woman that thinks that they don’t have power just isn’t using it right. But, to get the prestige and accolades for our accomplishments is a LONG, HARD road that many of us don’t make it very far down in our lives. 😌
I’m sorry. I love Bey. Black is King was magical. But this analogy doesn’t work for me. There is no artist ever that has taken the amount of shit that MJ has. So just to say he has a lighter weighted vest on doesnt work.
I listened to a 2 hour podcast like a year ago about MJ and how he acquired the Beatles catalog and then went on to own half of Sony music publishing (which basically means he owned half of the music industry since Sony music is so huge). He outsmarted high level executives in the industry to get what he acquired and took the majority of what they mainly profited off of. And then after acquiring half of Sony publishing he began to give black artist their masters for free for example MJ was trying to give little Richard his masters back and Sony did everything in their power to block that. He pissed the entire music industry off. When I tell you I got kind of nauseous when they talked about all the shit he got dragged through after doing this, hands down nobody has ever experienced the amount of calculated shit that that man has. The industry threw every possible arrow that could at that man. They took him through hell and back. So that analogy just didn’t work in this situation to me and I feel like the people who are not knowledgeable about the Sony music deal will probably agree with her analogy.
No that analogy is bs lol. Beyonce had a father to manage her early career and to push her just like MJ. Her vest is not heavier just bc she's a woman. Since when do ppl say 'I prefer to hear a man sing'???
Angel Lakita Moore is a hot mess 😩😂 I love her Kev bringing a non cookie cutter black woman on board was the best thing you could have done. I’ve been a fan of yours for years and I Love you even more for it
Hmm, even if you don’t like Beyonce the following conversations would be interesting: 1. If a male artist did the same type of visual albums, would they be respected more because they are a man? 🤔 2. Let’s talk about how as black women, we go hard to be respected on the same level as our non-black counterparts. And even tho Beyonce goes hard, some of her numbers don’t compare to some non-black artists.
I love the self-reflection offered up by Kevin. Continue to be and do what God has called you to do. Or as Dr. Stanley says...Obey God and leave all of the consequences to him!
#AFRICATOTHEWORLD nuff respect to all entertainers that are able to play their part to help #MakeAfricaGreatAgain (yes artists creating art for others to see is one of the many ways) ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
I just can’t get over the fact that if Do never took a hiatus, we’d never have this show. Minor setback for a major comeback. I admire the bounce back ✨
With everything going on in the world, my heart needed this. Beautiful film. I appreciate the artistry and celebration of Black people on such a grand scale. Brown skin girl song brought me to tears because it is needed and reminded me of my sweet little girl who doesn’t get to see herself reflected enough in positive ways. I also loved seeing her daughter carrying on the legacy in such a touching way. I enjoy this version of Beyoncé and am glad she used her platform to uplift and unapologetically spotlight the worth and creative excellence of Black people.
For anyone who wants to find out their African heritage, there is a Black owned company Called African Ancestry. They use your maternal or paternal DNA and trace is back 400-5,000 years and pinpoint the exact tribe you come from. It’s an amazing company that’s helping us reconnect!
Kevin just wanna say that no matter what yuh do I’ll support 100%. You’ve gotten me through tough times and even got me to almost fully kick my cussing habit. Thanks for all that you do and know that all your TRUE fans don’t care what you do as long as you’re staying authentic to who you really are. Much love to you and Angel
I'm white people and my family and I loved it. Beyonce is a perfectionist so no matter what she does, even if you don't like the message or opinion, you can appreciate the quality of her work.
@@sabrinalewis8544 @GabbyDavis Check her comment again, she said she and her family it. She was saying even if you don't like the message, you can still appreciate the work that went into it.
@@sabrinalewis8544 Lots of people in the comments said it was anti-Christian and about witchcraft but even if it was it was still visually stunning and her poetry was breathtaking.
Someone said the Moses moment represented her miscarriage. Just another level. Beyonce needs to teach classes on all the references in Lemonade and Black is King. There is so much to learn.
@@scholasticbookfair. lol why? I'm not a Bey fan but it was really really good. And the support of all the African directors and artists is a MAJOR PLUS.
That's why you REWATCH it multiple times to catch everything..... I loved that overload of color, culture. Every scene was RICH!!! I loved how she highlighted the african artist and let them have their moments . You can tell she studied every african culture she highlighted ... BLACK IS KING IS A WHOLE SPIRITUAL EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE!!! The blackness of it all was so beautiful and positive. MY GOODNESS!! Yes Angel, Beyonce is the G.O.A.T!! PERIODT!!
Zaddy Gonz! Truly, I get inspired hearing Kevin talk about his dreams, he goals. That makes me want to go out, refine and realized my calling. Ownership is SO important. That is what so many people miss. Own houses, land, your own creativity - that's my dream. I now feel like i need to deep dive into Beyoncé's catalogue to truly appreciate her arc. Her Netflix special lit a fire. People LOVE growth and are willing yo pay to see it. Btw, waiting for the graphics next time 😍😋
Can I tell you how much this podcast blessed me today? When you all spoke about doing what you're going to do regardless what others think and the things your therapist said to you. I am literally in tears. Thank you for sharing!!
I would just like to remind Kev that Angel was why I finally pulled the trigger on patreon not that I didn't love anything that you were doing KevOnStage studios was battling it out with Netflix but reminder; intersectionality black women, yonce 🤣🤣🤣
The fact that she used all black designers for her clothes, used African American dancers AND African dancers from each country she was trying to have them represent AFTER visiting those countries???? Not to mention the African music artists on the album and visual album???? Disney PAID HER for this film, this film was from HER production company lol. A Parkwood Production lol
This by far is my favorite one! Especially when you spoke on not focusing on pleasing people with your business. I’ve struggled with that with my theater company and this year I’ve finally embraced who I was as an owner and not to people please. Thank you for that! Angel, my favorite Beyoncé project in this order are 1. 4 2. I Am Sasha Fierce 3. B Day. Those three soundtracks made my life!
I thought it was pretty but I do need a 'program' or guide book for it. I did get lost and there was so much that I didn't know what to look for or focus on first.
African Americans are just waking up to the brilliance that was that album. Africans all over the continent feel in love with her sliver again. I remember when the “already” song came out I was like people this if fyah !!!! and the views was so paltry compared to her previous album. Thanks Beyoncé. ❤️❤️❤️
Love y’all together! Ugh! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾I STAN! And Cuzzo Kev, I truuuuuly appreciate your transparency with your realizations from your therapy sessions, and explaining why you’re during certain things now, because I can truly see myself in some of your points. As someone who is in the process of venturing into the media/content sector, the “what will they say/will it mess my life up,” has paralyzed me into a fear, that no one other than my close, close circle would believe. “Marian? Caring? Yea right, and pigs will fly.” 😂 But, your point from your therapist of “what if they don’t like you...” Boom. Phrasing it as a statement and not a question ends any anxiety behind it. Y’all are a blessing! But, to Cuzzo Angel’s point, respect the units. It’s a hard life, but it’s rewarding. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I want mine but I feel like its a waste of time and money because all of the black ancestry I've seen have been variations of the same things. Understandably so but its sad. Unless I can get an episode of Finding Your Roots on PBS I'm not doing it lol
Yeah, some people feel more grounded knowing their origins. But not everyone has that experience, or needs you have it. I'll do it eventually... As long as I ain't spitting to the fill line. 🤢
Brother Kev I truly thank you for speaking about your therapist experience in this video it really made me start crying out if nowhere but I realized I've been holding onto the idea that I have to please everyone. I know it seems random but this has convinced me I need to live my life for me so I will be breaking up with my girlfriend because she is not right for me... I've been crying the whole time I been texting this comment and I feel the weight lifting off of me.
I just wanna say I love y’all. Y’all have become my lunchtime friends lol I get my food then find y’all’s latest video and it feels like I’m having lunch with two of my FUNNIEST friends lol
I just finished watching Black Is King and cried😢😢😢When Brown Skin Girls started tears were rolling😢😢This filled my heart with such joy and pride!!!! I was inspired and wanting to go to Africa!! I’m in AWE of Beyoncé! She’s such a visionary genius❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Twitter is a very “toxic” site but the amount of factual information that is shared there .. you basically have to have common sense and tuff skin for twitter.
