By now you all know how near and dear Black Lives Matter is to my heart. For the past few months, I have purposefully ignored the systemic racism and police brutality that we as a people face, out of exhaustion, frustration, and flat out despair. Last night, for the first time in a while, I turned on the news to watch the reading of the verdict in George Floyd’s brutal murder case. I braced myself for the worse outcome (a not guilty verdict) and was overcome with emotion when I was proven wrong. Finally! We are starting to see justice. We are nowhere near done or even close to being HALFWAY done with the work that is required to dismantle centuries old systems of oppression in this country but we are finally at a point where the tide is seemingly turning. At this point, if you do not see the disparities, if you do not believe in the injustice, if you make excuses for the genocide of an innocent race, if you believe that Derek Chauvin had probable cause and was not guilty, if you argue about “not resisting” to avoid death, if you turn a blind eye, if you do not speak up, if you believe that all of these cases are just coincidental and you still scream “blue lives matter” as a retort to complaints about unjustified murder, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. This guilty verdict has validated all of the insurmountable frustration we as black people feel and as a human being, it is your duty to speak up and speak out when you see injustice. Finally justice was served and God-willing George Floyd may rest in a perfect place of peace eternally. ❤️✊🏾
