I have a Low Rider S with PV, I have a Fast Johnnie Road Glide and before the summer I'm going to tune it with PV, I want a 23 Low Riser ST to install a Trask turbo system, I think I'm going to buy a Thundermax ECU just to be safe..... hopefully the Chevron case take power away from the government.... and remember... FUCK THE EPA....
I used to be a regular citizen. But due to living in California, I am now an outlaw....an outlaw biker...I buy my parts from anyone, ebay, amazon or your mom. Currently I have a set of cams, a ss camplate that I had lying around but I can't get an ss pump. I've ordered 2 and had both sales canceled. And btw I will never buy an exhaust with a cat. Never. And if I do I'll cut it out. The epa are fckn idiots, like motorcycles cause much pollution compared to airplanes or bombs.
Do you folks from California have to have your bikes smog certified? I know that you’ve got to get your cars tested but I wasn’t sure about your motorcycles.
That's exactly what I saw coming when all this started coming down the line, huh government just created a parallel market and the o'l boy making parts in the back room of his shop suddenly has a new truck for those rainy and cold days.
I've been a machinist, now toolmaker for over 45yrs. I worked for a few hi-perf aftermarket companies. Yep, they had their own products and would take them to races to sell, to fund their own racing. Now, CNC machinery is rather affordable and if ya got the smarts, you can make parts, and money.
The biggest piece of information to be aware of as a Harley owner or Harley Buyer is that you do not want to participate in any government rebate dollars where they say they will give you a $5000 coupon on buying a new motorcycle of current year model if you let them crush your old motorcycle. They ran a program like this through the 1990s and the first 10 years up through 2010 and they managed to crush almost every old vintage vehicle that was still reliably running and people could repair themselves in their garage and be independent of finance companies dealerships and expensive computer based repairs. I am still of the opinion that it would be less toxic to the environment to reuse the vehicles that have already been built then to crush them put all those toxins into the earth re-process all of those metals and plastics and oils to make a new vehicle that will only last five years at the most and have to be replaced again. A long term study would reveal this but it does not benefit big government or big corporation pocketbooks it would only benefit middle and low income do it yourself motorcycle owners and riders. That’s why you haven’t heard of it. Don’t be a clone for their robot clone army, think for yourself.
You are 100% correct! After that cash for clunkers crap our used vehicle prices skyrocketed and it ruined the used market. You couldn't get a running car for 500 bucks anymore and totally screwed everyone.
If you can afford it buy now and hang onto it till you need it. I bought a 131 crate engine and 131 conversion kit, just for when the engine gets tired. Cost effective? Probably not. Do I sleep worriless at night? Yes
Not giving up my '93, '97, or my 2012, with one of the last race tuners sold in the U.S. & Dyno'd.😅😂🤣 The E.P.A. is a JOKE! If one knows how to weld, make your own stepped headers. I did for the '93.
If you don't know how to weld. Head to the community college and learn. EPA would go nuts with me. When they banned leaded gas, I wasn't destroying my bike. I probably dump way more lead adding my own than the gas ever did.
I own and ride 3 old Harleys 1949, 1957, and 1968. My garage, house, and backyard shed is parts bin and a swap meet that nothing ever gets sold from 😂. You've got to trade for something that I need in order to get what I have.
like you I have the old stuff, 1969, 1977, 2 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983. and lots of parts I roll around naked in when no one's looking, hahaha always looking for something older but the prices on the older stuff makes me shy away, AMF bikes are good if built right.
80 ci evo, with an Andrews cam, ported heads, carburetor tuned, with drag pipes. Zero emissions!! Softail Yes, still won’t out run a M8. But I love it, and it’s fast enough for me!! Great video as always!!
i always told my friends that this day would come. as long as someone is tech savvy....unlocking and tuning a ECU on a motorcycle is going to be a breeze... all the programming could be done at home... we are going BACKWARDS in time... more DIY than ever is coming and i actually enjoy it... not enjoying the EPA part of things but you get my point.
@GixxerFoo well, I mean it's cool that we can have shops do it for us... but I miss the creativity that came from the " old heads" ... I'm almost 32 and I remember, as a kid, bike shows had the same bike... but done is so many ways... now? It's like going to an outdoor dealership... they all look the same. ( unless VERY custom )
I am not giving my bike away or trade them in, for years I have been buying parts for each one of the mostly old new stock, I have 3 anniversary Harley’s and a 2015 heritage and a 2018 road glide ultra, I got tuners for all of them, exhaust and other high performance stuff, like I said before EPA should give motorcycles an exemption but they won’t, as it is some stuff for my 2015 Harley’s is already saying obsolete, so I get the parts were I can, and I will keep buying and stashing them away, I knew this would happen sooner or later, I even have a few brand new extra tuners brand new that are not made anymore stashed away also, keep it going your videos are great and informative!
Glad that I have kept an older set of moderately used Screamin' Eagle and Bassani 2-int-1 exhaust pipes for my 2005 Stage IV Fatboy. I was going to sell them, but with this news, I think I'll keep them around for a while.
Learn to weld, make your own, sell your labor to others that don't have the skill. This is just going to bring us all back to skilled labor and away from the big names.
Maybe the manufacturers will come up with a removable cat system, like the db reducers, that you can remove after point of sale but covers them for the sale? just a thought
That's a really slick idea! Remvovebit for the track and put it back before you ride home after "racing". I love the idea but you know what we would all do.
Here in France, in à few days, motorcycles Will have to be controlled every three years (every two years for cars). This year, the sound made by the bike will not be precisely measured, just "evaluated" by ear... Emissions will be measured though along with other criteria (tires, lights, licence plate, brakes...) It's been a long fight between bikers and the government but apparently we lost the battle...
Just saying, the Twin Cam was the last big twin that still sounds like a "Harley". HD tried to patent their "sound" in 1994. They completely walked away from it with the introduction of the Milwaukee 8 and the Revolution "Sportster"! 🙉
NY basically shut the whole conversation down by saying, "no modification to the exhaust system will pass inspection". it causes people to FIND all those original pipes that were just thrown in the trash. there was word that they would not send out your new registration unless it had been inspected the previous year. that doesn't appear to be true since i did get a renewal on my '71 which wouldn't pass because of straight pipes. the inspection process is all computerized with the state data system and they put the onus on the guy who does the inspection who has to log in to the system. nobody will risk a $5k-$10k fine for a $10 inspection. some riders are finding ways to register there bikes in other states.
The stock 117 on my FXLRS has more than enough power to do anything you would want. The stock exhaust is not the best, but I wouldn't want it more than 20% louder. If I want some performance, I'll buy a bike that actually performs, like a sport naked, with much better power, lean angle and performance parts for a fraction of what it would cost to build a Harley. What really bugs me about this whole thing is the amount of government overreach.
I have an 01 Night Train with a Mikuni carb and V+H pipes from the time period and no problems. I like that simple style of motorcycle that is maintainable in my garage, it has never been back to a dealer after it was bought. The computer loops of sensors and fuel injectors take more of a beating on a motorcycle from exposure, chips become obsolete. Put a S&S Super B carb and 12" straight pipes on that new bagger while you still can, look like a strobe light going down the road!
I’m in the same boat as you. I have an 08 sportster. Electrical parts are not available and the ones are are super rare. They aren’t making them anymore and everything on back order the timeline gets pushed forward. I fried my tuner so when I replaced the ECM had to get a new one turns out since I had put it on all the tuners were illegal. Got a Screaming Eagle tune from Harley and it has no power. Can’t power wheelie, clutch ups are difficult.
Thank you, I appreciate that! I try to keep up with the goings on in the market and talk to other shops and part time guys like myself. Exchange of information make the community stronger!
The EPA’s concern with motorcycles should be the least of concerns if there genuinely is one. This really boils down to a bunch of whiny people that just have a dislike in motorcycles from the jump.
We as bikers are nothing if not, innovative. When we started making speed parts, we made them ourselves. We went to a Machinest and they had a cam ground. Have you looked at Tuner cars? The advances made in performance in those goofy little cars is amazing. And who did The computer modifications? Some Mexican kids in California figured that stuff out. The EPA are the ones that Mac to send you the corner with fuel injection in the first place. We will adapt and overcome lol.
That's the attitude and the spirit we all need to adopt. Tuners will get unlocked, software will be modified, garages and back yard machine shops will open for business and we'll remain ungovernable. We just won't be able to order it online and have it delivered in some flashy box anymore. I will miss the stickers though lol.
There's gonna be a spike in single fire ignitions and carburetor purchases. I've actually seen a Milwaukee 8 converted to a carb already. Guy bought an Ebay motor and put it in a custom frame, hell of a lot cheaper than trying to run FI and mess with tuning.
Hey bro , I finished the Duece I told you about that I bought with 50k on the clock . I only paid 48 hundred for it and It was a one owner. Bike is a cream puff. Anyway I put fueling cam chest and hypo oil pump, lifters and I threw in that screamin Eagle 203 bolt in cam , it was cheap but really made a considerable difference especially with my heads getting ported and polished like a mirror. Point being, I have about 72hundred in a very dependable Harley Davidson. 😊
I’ve got two bikes, a 99 FXD SUPERGLIDE and a 2016 Ultra Limited. The FXD came with Screaming Eagle exhaust and sounds okay for now. But the Ultras’ exhaust is stock (and it’s in California), so I guess I’d better go to my mechanics shop and see about an exhaust while I can, and also check out swap meets. 9:24
Im trying to figure out who this actually affects? Even here in CA we don't smog motorcycles. If you managed to have a cop pull you over and ticket you for an aftermarket exhaust, you simply put the old one back on, get it signed off as being fixed, then you can put the aftermarket back on... at no point is there any sort of smog or fuel air map check.
They are going after the manufacturers to stop producing what they consider "race parts" altogether. The exhaust systems with cats aren't such a big deal in my book but the tuners being locked into lean tunes. That I don't really care for personally.
I have learned not to trust anyone with used parts. Unless they are new in box, there is always something wrong with stuff people are selling. As far as exhaust goes, I think weld-it-yourself mandrel-bent kits will become the best way to get good power and sound
What is the date the tuner manufacturers are required to lock the fuel mixture ability? Also I just decated my header using a hammer drill, and a boring bit with an extension. I also put on 41/2” slip ons that were too loud so I wrapped the baffles, and now it sounds just the way I like it. I would like to get it tuned. I was thinking about getting a Power vision.
I have an 04 carbureted Heritage and I'm already not going to my local dealership because it seems like they don't stock specific parts for my bike and it would take them two to three weeks to get them, where as on the internet it take a couple days on average.
It's really tough to find exhaust for metric bikes unless you get the Ebay special. It's even harder to find a power commander style inline tuner for those metric bikes. I love old sport bikes and I would love to restore an old 90's GSXR, Ninja or CBR just as a nod to my childhood but parts are impossible to find.
I own a 79 Suzuki GS1000 and a 2010 Victory. Searching for parts is nothing new for me. Definitely gonna rule out the weekend warrior bar hopper only looking to impress you with the money they can spend on a bike vs those who really want or enjoy beefing up and engine
The cams make all the difference! I think that might be the next thing the come after is taking the over lap out of the cams, that's whey Screamin Eagle cams don't make monster power.
EPA does not regulate noise that will be your city through an ordinance. EPA regulates emissions that pollute the air we breathe. They are no different than a game warden.
Their are also noise requirements, that's why the "race use" exhaust are unbaffled. If you check out the government label stamped on stock exhaust it has its conforms to disclaimer for noise.
My '89 FXRS, 2001 Sportster, and 2006 Sportster are already set up right. Probably a little rich. They sound good and run good. I just turned 65, so I'm not concerned about my bikes. They will outlast me. It's sad for the younger generations, but really, they seem to have little interest in motorcycles anyway. Aside from motorcycles, I am also a hot rodder. I have a '55 Chevy, a '64 Ford Fairlane, and a '68 Ford F-100. I built the engines in all three of these vehicles, and just like the Harleys, they are already set up the way I want them. I also have quite a collection of spare parts for the cars, and a few for the Harleys. My oldest daughter and son in law will inherit these vehicles, and they will be for sale to whoever wants them. I do see the prices of older vehicles going up. New vehicles, both cars and motorcycles are nothing but iPads on wheels. Many people have reached the breaking point with the TRASH technology on these vehicles, and are looking for older ones.
Your right Gixx, when backed into a corner most of us will find a way to make it work, I buy used parts from places like craigslist, kijiji, swap meets and word of mouth. And as far as exhaust, when in doubt...cut it out, the old grey beards have the mechanical knowledge, we just need the younger guys to be able to write computer program or know someone who can do that and your back making beautiful loud music and having a tire shredding good time. and for the record a cat may or may not have fallen out of one of my bikes 🤔🤫Cheers from the Great White North.
We are gonna needs guys who can crack the tuners. Unmarry vins and make the locked AFR tables unlocked, it can be done it's just no one really wants to publicly stick their neck out there.
The EPA, is an exercise in why you don't support big government programs. Eventually they all get too big for their britches and start dictating what is and isn't allowed without any form of oversight or judicial review. Honestly, I would love to see the whole of the motorcycling community come together and sue the EPA and the Fed for their constant overreach and intrusion into the pursuit of our happiness. ...I should have gone to Law school.
I don't even know where a chrome shop is anymore, buddy of mine used to run one back in the day and they regulated him into oblivion. Powder coating black is about the way to go anymore.
You know how much someone from the government wishes they could kick in your garage and take it right now. There's some seriously whacko people enforcing this crap they are hard after it to the point they stay up for days on end thinking about it.
@@GixxerFoo It's why I live in Tennessee instead of California. way back in 1991, I bought an El Camino that had an 454 factory and a 4 speed factory. I wasn't allowed to register in california.
That was a really good idea the way things are going! You might still be able to get it but it's not gonna be the one you wanted just like the FP4 and PV4, the new ones are not like the old ones.
@@GixxerFoo your shitting me! They already changed them? It’s supposed to arrive today! $1,100 🙄 guess I’ll send the damn thing back. Might need to leave my bike idling outside Walmart wile I shop. These pieces of shit are so gutless. Yamaha here I come
@@GixxerFoo so I just checked and to the best of my ability to research the thundermax wave tune I ordered has full functionality. I fear they can update thru their software to set compliant parameters? But it’s clearly for off hyway use ect ect. I don’t currently need it but when I do my cam chest it will be a must to make it run right.
You should do a build series and pick a good donor bike to show what can be done based on your wealth of knowledge. I'd suggest an old rigid mount, carb'ed, sporty 1200 or(and) an EFI 96 TC Dyna or Softy. (Post Hydraulic Tensioner or even show how to swap a spring thing). That would be awesome and probably get YUGE views.
F@#$ the EPA, F@#$ the federal government, they wont tell me what parts I am allowed to have on my bike, I will put what I want, when I want on my bike.
I have a lot of good deals and hard to find parts at swap meets . But you should not limit yourself , I found a very good exhaust for my evo at a second hand store . 9:33
What it will come down to especially in calif when they start doing checks all aftermarket parts that will effect smog will have to have a Executive Order (EO) # to be legal just like cars have to have
Over here in NYC some areas have noise cameras already, your at a certain decibel screaming by and a picture is taken with a ticket mailed to your residence 🤦🏻♂️
Marketplace has been a godsend for me being too cheap to fork out all the cash new parts cost got a set of v&h short shots for $200. I always buy used if i can sometimes takes a little extra work but that’s the cost of wanting nice shit but not wanting to pay full price
The FP4 is emissions legal, I am curious to see about the tuners before the latest one (PV3, FP3). If you own the PV3 I would say you'll have the ability to buy licenses to tune other bikes freely. I am curious about the Fp3 I have and updating it, I doubt it's going to make us change our tunes to epa legal ones if we update our tuners.
@@GixxerFoo Why in the world would I do that? Sorry, I know that was a rhetorical question. No, I would use an old set of straight pipes. I know they are not the most efficient or healthy exhaust, but the blue flames they give off are beautiful and the sound can't be beat. The M8s sound like riding lawn mowers to me. Yea, maybe I'm a dinosaur. 😆 Too bad we tolerate politicians that dictate how much testosterone we are allowed to have. Too each their own, I guess...
I have an 05 Fat Boy with Samson Short Slashers, no baffles no torque cones no tuner...runs absolutely great...I'll die with it,then my son will get it
The digital speedometers is what I hate the most and will never own a bike with one. I'm happy with my roadking and if I get another bike it will be an old one so I don't care what they do
They still have the autotune feature, but they don't allow you to modify the AFR tables which allow you to richen up the bike a little beyond what the EPA mandates. They still fuel (if you can call it that) what is needed per given RPM but doesn't put the fuel in for more power like they used too. They keep it as lean as allowable with the new tuners. But I will say and this is just my personal belief is that the tune you get from Vance & Hines FP4 or Power Vision PV4 will be better than the Screamin Eagle Street Tuner maps.
I agree screaming eagle will still be the most mild but I’m thinking the only way to really get the right tune is by paying for it but my concern is will the tuners be able to richen beyond epa regs
Luckily my bikes are set up just the way I like them and I do not for see me buying or selling a bike in the future. If anything you would have to cut out the cats from the exhaust and find someone that can bypass the firewall in the tuner. I'm sure there will be people who will do that.
It can be done and I see a market coming for it to be done with cracking those tuners. I am kinda the same way, I have the bike I like and honestly I haven't seen anything from Harley that's just screamed "take my money" to me.
